That's just daft, with crazy thinking like this, we would have gotten rid of Phil Jones after only 2 years on the physio table, makes no sense... think of all the images of that face we would have missed out on.... this guy is small picture!

By balancing wages based on performance etc.
I see this presented a lot here but do any other clubs actually do this?

If I'm a player and my wages are mostly made up of appearances, goals, assists, clean sheets etc, then I'm not gonna be happy if my manager decides to rotate me. This would mean money out of my pocket. I don't think many players would be willing to sign these contacts. I wouldn't.

Manchester Utd never lose, just run out of time
Of course they might struggle to shift those on high wages for any meaningful fees, but the key, going forward, would be to not hand out fat contracts to players who are either too young or have not proved anything in the game yet. Fast we start handing out more sensible wages etc. - moving on underperforming players will become less of a challenge.
Exactly.

It's going to be difficult to do it for the next couple of years while a lot of our players are making significantly more than they would anywhere else. But if we get our wage situation under control in that time, it will then start being easier. Getting players with the right mentality will also be important, focusing on players that are hungry and want to play even if it means taking a small paycut.

same PR bullshit as before. I will wait till I see actions are taken rather than all this talk.

Yes, I understand the sentiment, but how are they expecting to clear off players on high wages without taking a massive loss on the transfer fees we paid for.
The longer term plan is to prevent signings on over-inflated wages. It's already started to happen with Martial and Varane's non-renewal on current terms.

Yeah, not sure about a paycut :nervous: but agreed with your point. Hoping this is the start of competent people making the right decisions, which would be a first for us post SAF.

Why not just go for Alonso? Ancelotti has signed a new contract with Real and Klopp won’t be leaving Liverpool so seems like we would have a good chance of getting him (his Liverpool connection aside).
Alonso would be pretty ballsy to take a leap of faith on the club! He's only the road to being a manager and to put himself in the deep end could ruin his future job opportunities. Think he needs a few years under his belt to show his managerial prowess isn't just a fluke.

What will be more important is that we stop buying players who aren't good enough for stupid money in the first place.
We can and should buy players for Stupid money. But only those who wehave scouted extensively and have world class ability and have shown that on the big stage. RM spent 100+ on Bellingham and look at the impact hes had. Meanwhile we spent a similar-ish amount on Antony who wouldve looked expensive for 25m let alone 80+

End of the season, its likely that the likes of Varane, Casemiro, Sancho and Martial will leave. That's probably 1.2 million a week saved on wages. Surely, with the injection from Ratcliffe, we should have more wiggle room in the summer?

It’s also about targeting a different type of player – instead of past-their-prime players like Alexis or Varane or Casemiro (who come in for huge transfers and wages and perform for maybe a season), we should focus on the hungry, newly-emerged talents from clubs like Boca or River and nourish their talent. I think a complete overhaul and resetting of expectations are necessary. I would favor a massive clear-out of current players, rebuilding from scratch with young, hungry, and talented players. I’m fully aware that it will take a few years for results to materialize... and I am ok with it.

This sounds great in theory but I wonder how achievable it would be in practice. We'd have to get rid of more than half our playing staff this summer if that's really what we're planning to do.

I wouldn't mind seeing us taking hits on players if that's what it takes to re-build effectively though. The scale of the operation is huge and we can't afford to carry players who aren't good enough and whose market values will only continue to diminish.

The in practice part starts with who you sign and how, which means it's probably too late to apply rigorously to players who are here already.

Now I'm not saying that we shouldn't be trying to part ways with underperforming players, but the model under which they were signed was one where we've seemingly gone "Congratulations, you've made it to Old Trafford, here's a ~£200k p/w contract!"

That's what has made them hard to shift. Going forward, if a player needs that level of financial incentive to come and play for us, or if they don't back themselves to have earned an improved deal after a couple of seasons, they probably aren't a player we should be targeting at this stage.

Probably he has a DoF and Recruitment person on his head, who he knows well. He might front the name to the board you never know. We might be shocked again.

Atleast now we have people who think and see things differently.

Shame he won't be "officially" in office till the summer.

Hopefully he can pull strings from behind the scenes a bit or else it might be a case of our new era being delayed a bit

I don’t mean day to day performance, I mean merit. Such as not giving 250k to a 20yr old with 1 good season

By taking a massive loss. I wouldn’t be surprised if we are a bit more frugal in the next two windows to allow for a huge reset.

If this is how we'll do business with INEOS, then this is encouraging. Very quick, under the radar and handled well.
Agreed. I was really against their bid initially but honestly the early signs are very promising. If we can follow with a very good DoF and a decent Head of Recruitment before summer then I think I'll be happy.

These reactions are making me feel so odd. I haven't felt like this since we robbed Arsenal of Van Persie
Remember all the public adulation Rangnick got when we appointed him? All the coaches and players going on about total football and how he was the grandfather etc…

Reminds me of that… :nervous:

This sounds all well and good but players have contracts. You can't just force them to leave. Look at Maguire in the summer. We may be more willing to take a loss on transfer values than previously (this could result badly in FFP) but if a player digs his heels in then there's nothing Berrada can do.

There is no quick fix either…this guy isn’t going to make a billion in debt disappear or pay off 350 million still owed for transfers. Whilst also replacing half of the current squad in the summer.

But if he can come up with a long term plan and the club can stop making new mistakes. Then it can still be somewhat of a comforting appointment.

I think United should start a rebuild this summer. Rashford, Bruno, Casemiro, Varane, Maguire, McTominay, Antony, Lindeloft should be all sold. We should keep the young players and give Onana and Mount 1 more season to proof themselves. Sign 2 CB, 2 CM, 1 Striker, 1 RB. Next season is a write off, let the team built chemistry and young players with 1 more season under their belt. Mainoo, Garnacho and Hoijund will take us forward, not Rashford or Bruno. Looking forward in 2026......

Yeah I expect him to be communicating with INEOS on this whilst waiting to start in the summer. Don’t expect his suggestions to get leaked out to media though which is good
