England played with 2 strikers every time in that era. Wright was clearly the 2nd best striker after Shearer and should have been an automatic striker. The fact of the matter is that the managers were stubborn, bitter men who picked subpar players instead. Coming on as a sub counts as much as a starting in terms of caps. Cole and Fowler weren't getting caps because of Les Ferdinand, Kevin Phillips, Emile Heskey, Teddy Sheringham. Wright was clearly being shut out by worse strikers.

Newcastle Les Ferdinand for about 2 seasons I understand but not Spurs Ferdinand.
Ian Wright was not better than Andy Cole. Just to be clear, unsure if you’re suggesting that.

Sergio Romero got 96 caps for Argentina. He only had 310 senior appearances at club level which is nothing for a goalkeeper.

James Tarkowski only 2 caps. Never brilliant. Always reliable. I suspect there was lots of competition when he was at his best.

Nice thread, just checked the portuguese team caps.

João Moutinho has 146 caps, this one surprised me, he's been around forever I guess.

I know it's different times but it's always funny to see Helder Postiga with more caps than Eusébio 71-64

Also, this one I wouldn't believe it if it wasn't in the official website, Raul Meireles has more caps than Deco, 76-75.

Bruno Alves with 96 also surprised me, and Hugo Almeida with 57, that guy was so clumsy.

Daley Blind has 104 caps, 6th on the all time list. By the time he is done, he will be top 5, maybe even top 3 most capped Dutch international. Daley Blind is a work of art
Kind of a bizarre stat when you consider his dad only has 42 caps and my nostalgic mind feels like he was twice the player his son is (i do like Daley too tbf).

I always thought it odd that Hoddle only got 53 caps.
Wilkins, a decent player, got 84.

I mean, not knocking Wilkins but Hoddle was a genius. He and Robson should have started every England game for a decade

Matt Le Tissier and Kieran Richardson have the same number of England caps (8). Danny Mills has more than both of them combined (18).

Cabaye was good for a long time. Also people shouldn't mix eras because pre-90s international Football didn't had that many official games and rare friendlies.
Yeah, I'd imagine a massive spike in the amount of games players are playing these days - both club and international football.

Danny Welbeck has 42 England caps. I would imagine that makes him our 3rd most capped forward of the last 10-15 years behind Rooney and Kane?

You are getting your era's mixed up a bit here!

Phillips didn't play much for England (8 caps)

Heskey didn't make his England debut until 1999, at which point Ian Wright was washed up and playing for Burnley then Celtic.

In the 90's Shearer was clearly the best English striker in the league, so the idea was to find the best strike partner for him. Sheringham and Les Ferdinand were better foils for him than the likes of Ian Wright, Robbie Fowler or Andy Cole, so that's why they didn't get much of a look in.

Emile Heskey has more (62) England caps than Paul Gascoigne, Jimmy Greaves and Stanley Matthews.
It saddens me that this does not surprise me. I distinctly remember that period where the media were slating him up top for England but the narrative was he was the best option as he allowed others to thrive. His goal record was awful and when you think of the other options we had, it really is a bizarre one.

Robertson is already in the top 10 for all time Scotland caps which is somewhat mental.
