I think people are going overboard with the Mainoo shouts. Sure he's been okay and scored that wonder goal. While he's doing well for an 18 year old, he hasn't played enough nor has he been influencial enough in the games he's played, to be a best player candidate IMO.

I'm not sure who I'd pick for our best player. I don't think anyone has really stood out and has a claim for having a good season(thus far) which speaks volumes for how poor our season has been. Maybe I'll feel different in a month or 2.

For worst: Antony.

Players have to have played a certain amount to be under consideration..

Best:
  1. Garnacho
  2. Dalot
  3. Mainoo
Worst:
  1. Antony
  2. Rashford
  3. Take your pick....
Antony is the easiest call for either, he's been atrocious along with allegations of being an abuser and his general demeanor making him thoroughly unlikable as a person from what we know, along with the way he plays football being thoroughly unlikable as a player. Bad mix.
Rashford has started to turn it around lately but went a long time of horrible performances. Thought about putting guys like Varane or Casemiro but I feel like they were both injured a lot and have done ok recently with time to turn it around. Thought about Onana as he's had far too many big mistakes but on the whole, not sure it's fair to have him 3rd specifically. Loads of options for that spot.

The 3 best is an easy call for me, in that order too. Hojlund I think will also work his way in that. Garnacho player of the season by far and Dalot has been the only defender who has been reliably fit and also done a good job individually given all around him going to shit. Mainoo been class since he stepped in.

Best I would say is Garnarcho for lack of competition.
Worst has to be Onana - Could be Antony or Martial but they are both out for a period of time. So default goes to Onana. It scares me each time a ball crosses into our penalty area and he comes off the line. He either punch our own player with the ball or misses the ball while colliding into our own player.

This is a weird season. We do have a pretty strong first eleven that on any other season most of them have the capability of being the best in a season. But with most of them out injured the entire season, there are not many left to choose a best player or even worst player from.

Go to be Garnacho and Antony

Even easier to see the vast difference since they both playing right wing

Mainoo with the break out award

Don't think Mainoo has played enough yet even though he's been great. Think it has to be between Garnacho and Dalot so far. Garnacho has been better but Dalot has played more.

Onana, Anthony and Rashford have all been hilariously bad.

Gun to my head I'd say Garnacho and Rashford.

Best: Garnacho. Not just for his output, but for work rate and attitude.

Worst: Antony. Consistently useless. At least Rashford has had good moments, and Onana has had good games. Antony’s only goal contributions came against a league two side. Says it all really.

Best is obviously Bruno, by a longshot. Trailing him there's Dalot and Garnacho, but Maguire (Caf favorite) and Mainoo (small sample) also deserves a shout.

Højlund is closer to worst than best so no idea why he's being mentioned. Would probably give Antony a run for it if not for recent scoring form.

Finally someone who doesn't just give Bruno an honorable mention. Someone even put him on their worst list!

I get that Bruno hasn't been as good as previously, but surely he's been better than Dalot (who's been solid and is in my top 3 by the way) and Mainoo who's sample size is far too small. Garnacho is the only player I can understand putting ahead of Bruno, even if I don't agree.

Contender for worst post in this thread.
Really? Do please explain how you think Rasmus Højlund has been our best overall player this season, and why this is so obvious that it is ridiculous to argue otherwise.

Really think Evan's should be getting more mentions in this thread. Yeah I probably over-egged it a bit as having him as our best player of the sesaon so far (though really, I don't think there are any outstanding contenders) but in terms of consistency and stepping-up beyond what anyone expected, he's been great.

Best player is probably Bruno if we're honest, can be frustrating when he gives the ball away, but he's far and away the only player in our squad that is creative and causes problems for our opponents on a consistent basis.

Evans has been very good when called upon.

Surprisingly good have been Maguire and Mainoo (given his age and coming into a team in poor form)

Surprisingly bad is where Rashford has been until recent games.

Hard to choose between Antony and Onana for worst/most pointless player.

Probably have to give that to the keeper for his incredible ability to not do the things a goalkeeper should do. He might be a bit better with his feet but I definitely feel we'd have won a few more games with De Gea still in goal.

He always tries and actually played well. Now he is scoring every game.

I think it is ridiculous to argue he was bad in the first place. He helped the team and always got in good positions.

Best - Bruno. Not his best season, but i feel he knitts the team together.

Worst - Onana. As much as Antony has taken a big step back, Onana's mistakes have cost us, especially in the CL.

Dalot has been a pleasant highlight and he doesn’t get anywhere near the love he should do

No one. The best anyone has been is average. I'd probably say Garnacho. But absolutely no one has had "a good season" outside of contexts like "for a young player in their debut season" for Mainoo. This has been a really terrible season, its odd to me how some seem to forget that when we have a couple of decent results.

You can still find some positives though, we are 6th not 16th and have had a huge amount of mitigating issues (MG, Sancho, Antony) as well as injuries. Somehow we remain in the hunt for CL places. If you honestly, hand on heart, are unable to pick a single player who has done well, maybe just don't comment.

I can't. I can pick two young players who have done what I'd say is well in the context of them being young players in such a bad team, Garnacho and Mainoo and to a lesser extent Hojlund have all shown great resilience and ability at various times. I couldn't name a single player over the age of 21 who has had a good season. None of them have. It's been an utter disaster of a season.

Rashford is the biggest underachiever by an absolute mile. Biggest overachiever has gotta be Jonny Evans - he took everyone by surprise.

Very difficult to say someone has had a good or bad season when we're still in the thick of it. As many have said, Hojlund, Garnacho, Dalot have all been solid. Bruno has been decent. Mainoo is really exciting. Shaw has been good since coming back. It's been far from a 'good' season so far but there's a resilience in this team and the goals look to be slowly coming. If it's the young lads who drag us through into the CL, I hope you will be revising your opinion come May.

I think you misread my opinion if you think I'm slagging the young players. They're the only ones who don't deserve some degree of criticism. Dalot and Bruno have not been anything I'd call good, decent at best, very bad plenty of times. How much of that is down to themselves vs. poor management is debatable.

Best: Mainoo (relative to expectations).

Worst: Antony, followed by Onana, Martial and Rashford.

Somebody just mentioned Mount and I realized I totally forgot we had him.

I've not said he was bad. But you're not our best player this season just because you're trying hard. And what exactly does "played well" mean? Other than goals, that comes down to tangible contributions with an impact. Non-routine passes that creates something. Winning the ball. Successful take-ons. Pressing actions that forces a ball-losing mistake. Headers won. Good shot attempts. Drawing fouls in good positions. For that matter, smart runs that opens space for others.

When he doesn't score, Højlund does not contribute a great many of these things, compared to many other of our players. Mainly because his involvement on the ball is so limited. He doesn't do many negatives either so he's not a liability, but he does not have a big impact in games where he does not score. Now he does and long may it last, but for most of this season he hasn't. It is frankly ridiculous to claim he's been one of our best players this season, never mind THE best.

But if he keeps this up, he might be in that conversation at season's end. Well-deserved too, because he has never stopped trying.

Garnacho, Dalot a distant second
Antony, Onana a close second

Sad that Rashford and Bruno have been poor this season, though their uptick in form in recent weeks if sustained could bring us back to CL qualification.

Worst : Rashford Bruno Martial
@Jeppers7 thinks Bruno has been one of our worst players this season? I, for one, am shocked.

Waiting for the rationale behind how Bruno's antics in the 7-0 defeat last season is why he's been a worse player than Antony so far this season.

I can see why people pick Dalot, I've liked his performances too but very often he's fallen into sleep and left acres of space at the back post from which we have conceded. Onana is the same, good performances as well but his mistakes always show up on the scoreboard

The best: Mainoo, Garnacho and Martinez

The worst: Antony, Rashford

Best: No one. You need consistency to be the best and we have not one player like that. No one stands out. Maybe that will change in the second half of the season now.

Worst: Antony and Rashford. Consistently bad, especially Antony.

Special mentions: Mount, Martial, Sancho.

Garnacho and Mainoo best but Dalot is starting to shine.
Rashford worst , he doesnt look like he wants to be on the pitch.
