REMEMBERING JANUARY 29, 1956: Second round of the European Champions Cup! Partizan - Real Madrid 3:0




When the European Champions Cup was launched in 1955 on the initiative of the Parisian sports newspaper "L'ekip", Partizan had the honor of representing Yugoslavia in this competition.

In the first round, Partizan met with Lisbon's Sporting. With this match in Lisbon, the European Champions Cup was officially opened. After 3:3 in Portugal and 5:2 in Belgrade, Partizan advanced to the next round of the competition, where it was expected to face Real Madrid.

Real was known to be a big and powerful club. However, the Spanish knew almost nothing about Partizan. The first game was played in Madrid. Partizan were going to the country of the dark regime of Generalissimo Franco, and there were no diplomatic ties between the two countries. On December 25, 1955, over 100,000 spectators gathered at the stadium in Madrid. Real won 4:0 under very strange circumstances. Partizan started aggressively from the start and scored two goals in the 8th and 10th minutes. Both goals were scored by Miloš Milutinović, but the French referee Harzig canceled them due to an alleged offside position. Partizan players baptized themselves in wonder because of these decisions of the referee, which the Spanish audience welcomed with applause. It was nice for them to baptize people from a country where atheism was propagated. This probably had an influence on the players of Partizan to give in and concede four goals. There were no extensive reports from this match. There were no telephone connections between Yugoslavia and Spain. Partizan's road leader, Pavle Jovićević, sent a short report by telephone to the correspondent of "Borba" in Paris, Bogdan Pešić, and he forwarded it to "Sport" by telephone.

The rematch took place on January 29, 1956. The match aroused great interest among Partizan football fans. In very cold weather and heavy snow, more than 40,000 spectators gathered at the JNA stadium. During the whole game, it was played only in front of the visitors' goal. In the 24th minute, in one action, Zebec employs Milutinović, who sends the ball to the right place and gives Partizan a 1:0 lead. At the end of the first half, the guests had a chance to equalize. In one of the few actions of the Spaniards, the ball hit Lazarevic's hand, so the Swiss referee Gulde pointed to the penalty spot. Real's left half Rial shot over the goal.

At the beginning of the second half, in the 47th minute, another penalty, but this time for Partizan, because someone from the Real defense played with his hand in the penalty area. Prvoslav-Boba Mihajlović increases the score to 2:0 with a precise shot. Partizan continued to besiege the Madrid goal. Chances kept coming, which drew sighs from the frozen spectators. In the 87th minute, Milutinović dribbled past several visiting players, broke in front of the Real goalkeeper and sent the ball into the net. It was also the final result, 3:0 for Partizan.

The press carried abundant reports from this meeting. Everyone agreed that the famous Spanish club was destroyed, and that Partizan almost reached and annulled Real's advantage from the first game.

Partizan played with: Šoškić - Belin, Lazarević - Kaloperović, Zebec, Pajević - Mihajlović, Milutinović, Valok, Bobek, Herceg.

To this day, this match remains in the memory of the older supporters of Partizan. The famous president of Real, Santiago Bernabeu later stated in his memories that Partizan was the only one who could stop their winning streak, because no one outplayed them like that. On one occasion, Bernabeu asked Miljan Miljanić, who he brought to Real, what happened to that blond boy, who scored two goals for Real. On that occasion, he asked Miljanić to apologize to that boy for the first game, because both goals he scored were regular. And the left-wing striker Francisco Gento often pointed out that in the five-year cycle of triumph, he especially singles out the game with Partizan and later when they played with Juventus. Those two games remained in his great memory.
