I've only just seen that clip and now I'm confused what the fuss is even about. The way people were going on I thought he was goading right in Coventry players/fans faces while slapping them with his dick or something.

I know right. I feel there's a definite overlap of people not being able to be objective with Antony and the outrage at this - they were being gobby shits and he gave them some somewhat childish banter afterwards. Who gives a feck?

Love that we have become a graveyard for washed up players that start their media merry go round at the club. Coady and Townsend recently and now our 15m signing. They're getting younger too. He's still only 27.

Dele Alli was on MNF last week, too.

A £90 million player cupping his ears after scraping through a penalty shootout (that he didnt have the balls to take one in the first 5) against a championship side is fecking shocking behaviour. He earns twice as much as their whole squad, and scored less goals against Premier League opposition than Ellis Simms has this season. He showed his class.

I can't think of any situation, ever, where any person cupping their ears would be "shocking behaviour"

Unless, I dunno, you're at an Aphasia convention and have just rounded up an address to the crowd with "speak up then you wankers"

Otherwise, what mentally stable adult person gets even mildly annoyed by it?

Probably the players from the 2nd tier who thought they were through to the final of the FA Cup for the only time in their life. I'd say getting taunted after that roller-coaster of emotions might nark you. Shame we all dont have the elite mentality of you.

You do realise Antony isn't responsible for picking the order of the penalty takers? Ten Hag decides who takes the first 5. You're clearly letting your hatred for Antony get the better of you.

You honestly think if he'd have put his hand up, Ten Hag would have went "no, we want our full back taking one instead." The fact he wasnt in the first 5 is shocking.

I detest the whole culture of 'shithousing' in football. By that I mean its modern day, social media fuelled incarnation, where grown men are acting like complete muppets, deeply aware of the cameras and their meme potential. Its embarrassing. I hate the way other grown men watching giggle and guffaw at it - cringey shit like a darts celebration. Oh what a fecking rebel. A bit of winding up, time wasting, sneaky fouls, provocative celebrating and so on has always been part of the game. Guys like maupay make me cringe, and almost every premier league goalkeeper now thinks any kick out or catch is their time to shine when leading. Sad pricks.

I think they would mostly be disappointed at losing the penalty shootout tbh.

I wasn't aware not being extremely wound up by someone cupping their ears, constituted having an elite mentality. I'd put it more under "not a violently angry psychopath" personally.

Genuinely can't tell if you're being serious or not. Fair play if this is a semi convincing but slightly pointless wind up.

Yep. Dalot is a good penalty taker. Guess who took our first 2 penalties in last year's semi final shootout vs Brighton? Casemiro, then Dalot.

Weghorst (an attacker) took our 6th penalty and scored it. Was that because he was too scared to take one of the first 5 penalties? Or was it because the manager picks the order of the penalty takers based on their conversion rate in training?

The manager picks the takers based on several things. Ability in training, their nerves after ET and whether they want to take one or not. That's not even an opinion. That's how it is, and always has been. You cant pick 5 penalty takers prior to the match. Rashford would have been one of them. Antony, a cockney little bellend like him, should have had his hand up immediately.

Well, this isnt Football Manager. These players have actual emotions and pride in themselves, and you'd expect the reaction of Harry Maguire, not Antony. Its disrespectful and pathetic. And totally within that players character.

I think Antony went to put his hand up but he could sense you already typing out a post about how shocking it is of him to have the nerve to think he should take a penalty, so instead turned it into an ear cup gesture

I never said you could only pick them prior to the match? Ten Hag looked at who was left on the pitch and picked the best takers in order. Whether or not 'they want to take one' is an old fashioned trope. As we saw vs Villarreal, every player may have to be called upon to take a penalty, and every outfield can score their penalty.

Out of all the things to criticise Antony for, claiming he didn't have the bottle to tell his manager that he is going to change the penalty kick order that he's just read out, is bizarre.

They also, for the most part, aren't angry little children with a weird hatred of Antony, so probably were more annoyed about their winning goal being 0.1mm offside/upset at losing a cup semi, than concerned by Antony doing an ear cup gesture.

Most people, including Coventry City football players (i assume), have rational emotions, which consist of normal things like disappointment, joy, anguish, etc. More extreme emotions are triggered by extreme circumstances. E.g. walking in on your wife shagging your mate. They don't usually have psychopathic, person specific emotions like "enraged at Antony", "disgusted by Antony", "fuming with Antony" etc. that are triggered by things like an ear cup.

Its actually less to do with Coventry and more about the small time attitude of a £90 million "star." If you want to cup your ears, do it in normal time when we havent just let 3 goals slip past us.

What if he only cupped one ear? would this be only half as shocking, or doubly as shocking because he hasn't even correctly mastered the ear cupping technique?

I wasn't aware there was ear cupping etiquette.

Tevez used to do it to his own fans cheering him when he scored, and that's the only time I can ever remember being remotely concerned by an ear cup, principally because I was concerned that Tevez might actually be trying to indicate that he was going death.

It would have been very weird to do it in normal time though. Considering the Coventry player who he did it in retaliation to only cupped his ear and told the United fans to pipe down after his first penalty in the shootout.

You just had to look in Dalots face before the penalty. I was sure he would score, without a doubt. At that point I just wasn't sure if I even care anymore though.

Yep, that’s a completely bizarre thing to criticise Antony for . As if you’d need to invent things to lament him for - there’s enough actual things out there already, ffs.

Yeah. Harry Maguire would never cup his ears over something so petty.
