Hope, We Lose
Some terrible defending in general as per usual. Onana a poor pass and AWB too slow and not aggressive enough closing down the wide player result in the 2 goals. There was more bad defending and chances but we got away with them.

Going forward some positives. Relationships between Bruno and several teammates are improving. The best one is Bruno and Dalot, they were both finding each other with through passes over the course of the game a couple of times each playing each other in as the man running behind the defence. They've had a good relationship for a while but I think this is the best they've managed to pick each other out in dangerous positions.

Then Bruno and Mainoo, with Bruno making some runs in behind the defence expecting Mainoo to have the quality to pick him out and he almost did. More of that from Mainoo please, he can and will manage it if Bruno keeps making the runs. Mainoo also gets an assist for the pass into Bruno who had time and space to turn and score from range with his left.

And then finally Bruno and Hojlund, another great run from Bruno and found out wide where he puts a great ball across for Hojlund to get on the end of and score. And you can see him pointing to Bruno in celebration

This is much more of what you'd expect from the captain. I dont think we're going to get him organizing midfield and defence and making sure people do their defensive duties - Garnacho did better tracking back today btw. But what we can at least expect from an AM as captain is that he has a good understanding and relationship in the attacking phase with our other players, knowing how to get the best out of them and when to trust them to find him making his own runs. And today thats what he showed so well done to him

Let's qualify for the conference league, and be the first team to win the European grand slam. Champions league, Uefa cup, conference league and Cup winners Cup.

Agreed. People compare him to LvG but it’s nothing like it. There’s plenty to be justifiably thrown at Ten Hag, but the games are not boring
I had just sat down and found the game and United had just gone 1 down. I knew there would be more goals, not necessarily that we’d win. I prefer this to when we’d go a goal down and lose 1 or 2 nil in painfully long games where we create nothing.

Low bar ? Yes, it’s a really low bar but if this is the final few games of ETH , might aswe’ll just go out Kevin Keeganing it

I wanted to complain about making a game against the 20th place team competitive, but I just saw that Everton won so I'm just gonna focus on the positives here. We played very well in the first half. Bruno had a fantastic match, Maguire looks more like a captain without the armband. Garnacho was great apart from his finishing. Hojlund got a goal. Mainoo is still qaulity. Wheatley getting a debut was also nice. A great night of football all around.

Get in there.

Making it hard work against a pretty dire Sheff Utd side seems par for the course really.

Thank Christ for Bruno during games like tonight.

No Rashford and we score 4, which frankly should have been 6-7

Totally dominated that shower of shite and still managed to make hard work of it. Bruno was brilliant, Antony was Antony, Garnacho was decent, Mainoo was quiet but kept it ticking over nicely in midfield. Maguire was solid enough.

Brereton Diaz looks a handful, could be worth a punt as a backup striker.
Name the last striker that hasn’t look a handful against us?

Finally got a decent win, but boy did we make hard work of it and could easily have been caught out again at 2-2 to go behind for a 3rd time.
Reality check reminds us the opposition are cut adrift in the basement of the Premiership and yet we couldn’t dispatch them until late on.

One positive.
It helps to line up with 11 players at the start of the match, rather than the 10 we’ve (effectively) put out recently….if you catch my drift?

Wasn’t anything special tonight but regardless of playing ourselves in to trouble again and again, we probably deserved our win. Bruno was fab tonight and glad Hojlund got his goal. Also congrats to Wheatley for getting his debut, hope he plays on Saturday.

How I felt while watching it. Only we could be losing by conceding such poor quality chances and we had every chance of to win it, but so profligate it was unreal.

Any other season that's a comfortable night, but after Sunday everyone has the fear in them.

First league game this season I haven’t seen a second of and it sounds like we were actually good?

Happy with the win. Hojlund got a goal and Bruno was class. Lovely header from Maguire.

My main gripe though is a common occurrence, what the hell is he doing with Mainoo tactically?
He is literally in the centre forward position or num 10 position most of the time while Dalot is in midfield getting on the ball?
This is the most talented midfielder we’ve developed in 20 years and he’s completely limiting the amount of possession he gets. Frustrating to watch.

A Europa League place looks possible now.
Anything to avoid that Europa Conference malarkey.

Bruno looked good. Glad Rasmus got a goal.

That situation where the ref blew for a penalty but the ball ended up in the net was a bit chaotic. What would have happened in a situation like that if VAR had reviewed the decision and decided it was not a penalty? I mean, for the good of avoiding the backlash and controversy I can't see any VAR team ever making that call in that situation, but you never know
Given some of the calls recently, I'd say it was a soft penalty. We've certainly had stronger claims turned down.

Am I right in thinking if we finish 6th we'll be in the Europa League either way. Either as Cup winners or more likely as a result of City winning the cup and the spot going to the league

It is the rigid adherence to his system. Mainoo is playing in the same role than McTominay plays in or Mount did at the start of the season as that 2nd AM and you can recently how his touches have dropped off because of it.

Dude is allergic to playing a standard 2 in midfield this season which is odd given that the best football Utd have played under him came with either Cas-Eriksen or Cas-Fred in midfield last season as standard pairs. The results turning to shit since he started to switch to a 4-1-4-1 post the League Cup final is traceable as well.

Agreed, think it’s hilarious we get a terribly soft penalty when the ball was going into the net. Typical.

Good to get a win again in the league...feels like it's been ages.

As an aside, I just saw that Sheffield United have let in 92 goals this season. That must be nearing a record, right?

Yeah, it’s mind boggling, why won’t he change it?!?

Mainoo played as the deepest midfielder for about 10 minutes in the second half and that’s when Bruno scored his second. And then Mainoo went back to the AM role with Mctominay playing deepest, who is poor on the ball.
I don’t get it.

McT was chucked on to try and grab a goal when it was 2-2, but I would guess that because of the injuries he has been dealing with recently, Ten Hag switched it to McT sitting after the goal came to protect him physically.

Or it could have been a defensive choice, in case they started hitting it long.

Never doubted it for a second.....

Very glad Rasmus got back scoring. And what a hit from Bruno.

Also, it presumably has been answered elsewhere but whats happened to Mason Mount?

There is a lot of moaning tonight; and we were sloppy for 2 goals, but we do look better without Rashford IMHO

I’m fine with bringing Mctominay on for a goal, but keep Mainoo in midfield and on the ball ffs.

That's the 21st time this season we've conceded at least 2. We're going nowhere fast with this carry on.

Happy that Hojland got his goal at the end. Was at game and kept my eye on him first half, he must have made 15 runs in that 45 min but we never play the ball down the middle and kept going to wide areas where we never cross the ball. That has to be instructions from manager and quite frankly I will be glad not to have to watch his brand of tumescent football next season.

Ok win though, that's it.
