I mean I'd rather have Hojlund than Lukaku starting though.

Sesko or Toney are my picks personally. Think we'll be priced out of Isak considering we need to address midfield/defense as the priority of our budget this summer.
Yeah would take either of them, feels a bit like Ferguson may not be able to make step up

He has 1 more goal that the up and coming striker we already have...be real please, we need goals.
Bit of a lazy analysis. He took the first half of the season to find his groove in a new country. He has been quite prolific since January. Similar to Højlund really, other than the fact that the latter has struggled to recapture his form since returning from injury.

Solanke. None of this settling in period and getting use to physicality of premier league

Solanke knows premier league and has showed he is capable of scoring goals.

With the right sevice he will score goals for us.
Yeah really proved himself as a prolific goalscorer which I will admit I didn't think he could

We have too many positions to fill and quite frankly it will take us at least 2-3 years before we can seriously compete for the juicy stuff. The last thing we need is to buy some 28 year old only to have to replace him (with Bruno, Onana, McT, Rashy and co). Thus we need to focus on players who are in a budget and who are of a certain young age.

My list would be

Jonathan David - 24 years old, 1 year left in his contract and the French league 2nd best top scorer after the obvious one.
Terem Moffi - 24 years old and Nice top scorer. The guy has it all (power, skill and pace)
Pavlidis - he's scoring tons of goals in the Dutch league and has just 1 year left in his contract

Still feel we should be all over Solanke/Toney provided that the price is around the £50-£60m mark

Yeah last night we saw the best of him, unfortunately has come too late for Euros and teams need to see him stay fit too. Maybe there could be interest again next summer.

Welbeck

Bring him home, he leads the line well and this is purely cover and part of a fourman rotation in the squad. Also a free transfer. Very definition of "do a job" should injury crisis hit.

And now one of the below:

Solanke

Rotation piece with Rasmus, whoever is offering more threat and help to the team plays. The other can sit on the bench and be an impact player. He would relish the idea of playing for United and would work hard. Not super expensive, not massive wages and a decent finisher.

Toney

Profile of a player who can hold up the ball, cause issues in the pocket, bring others into play and release the runners going past him. Good finisher and technically sound, can see him play as a #9.5/10 off of Rasmus. Downside, is pretty expensive and the gambling issue.

Sesko

Obviously talented, had a bit of a dip but the ability is there. Issue with settling into a new league, it's a big transition. Apparently has a decent release fee under £50m so could be worth a punt.

But we must buy two tbh.

I respect your opinion, I understand your point and I tend to like your posts. However think about it. First of all I very much doubt that Toney will go for 50m-60m. I think it was Ben Jacobs who said that the fee will be far larger then that. That's a problem in itself as we need so many positions to be filled which means that we can be throwing too much money on one position especially for a 28 year old.

Toney gambling issue is a problem. Tonali was the Serie A poster boy, a sort of Captain Italia. His attitude on and off the pitch was outstanding. Yet the gambling addiction consumed him and at this point only god knows what will happen to him. The last thing we need is to spend 60m on some striker who won't be able to play for us for the next 1-2 years.

Finally age is indeed a concern because most of our top players are at the wrong end of their 20s. That's compounded by the fact that it would take us at least 2-3 years to get back to our winning ways. We can't affording coming to a whisker away of winning the league title only to hit our face straight to a brick wall made up of a core unit of players who are in decline followed by a rebuild

Solanke is younger but he really had 1 top season in the EPL. If he's available for 50m then I'd say we should consider him. However I very much doubt that he would available at that price

When Mount with only 1 year left in contract cost 60m, people really think Toney and Solanke will cost less than that with the seaon they just had?

Isak £63m transfer to Newcastle was a steal in hindsight.

The Sheffield United loanee Berenton Diaz looked okay yesterday and would be an okay option for me. I learned that he was at United as a kid up to age 14 so may have fond memories (or not so fond). Villereal may look to take some of our outgoing players in exchange (Lindelov, Martial?)

Edit: remembered Martial is out of contract this summer, yay!

Mount was a poor negotiation job from United but he was still 4 years younger than Ivan Toney is now at the time we signed him and already had several years experience playing at the top level.

Strikers obviously tend to go for more money because goals can win you games but that doesn't necessarily negate the other factors which will determine Toney's fee.

Toney's form hasn't been great since returning from his ban and he's never played for a team at any kind of level in Europe. Factor in age and contract situation, Brentford would be doing really well to get £60m+ for him. I certainly wouldn't be touching him for that kind of fee.

Solanke is a different story because he's slightly younger and has longer to run on his contract. Good player but it's not really economical to even try for someone like him unless there's a release clause.

Think we should sign Ollie Watkins. Very good ST and will give us different ways to play. Only issue will be his price tag.

I believe that United's issue in terms of goals doesn't come from the striker but from midfield and defense. We don't control possession enough and we create enough assists. In fact in the EPL Bruno is our main assist man and he's at 15th place. Combined Garnacho (4), Rashford (2) and Antony (1), had created less assists then the likes of Watkins (12), Trippier (10), Palmer (9), Bailey (9) and Gordon (8). Thus I'd rather see us spend the money elsewhere specifically

- flanks (get rid of some of our wingers btw)
- strengthening defense and midfield (that would allow the creative players to focus on their game)
- wingbacks that can create assists

As said before my criteria is about price (cause we've got too many positions to fill) and age (we need players to hit their prime when we're in our prime). My list is

a- Jonathan David - He's 24, he's the second top scorer in the French league after the pretty obvious and he's got 1 year left in his contract
B - Terem Moffi - He's 24 and he's Nice top scorer. Hopefully SJR can give us a fair deal for him
c- Vangelis Pavlidis - 25 years old, he's 2nd top scorer in the Dutch league and he also have 1 year left in his contract
d- Sesko - he has a minimum fee clause of around 45m

Saf had signed many 'underwhelming' forwards in his time. We were linked to Batigol and we got Cole, then there was the 23 yr old guy from molde and Sheringham. Even the likes of Yorke and Saha were hardly considered as world beaters. Not to forget the short term fixes such as Larsson and Owen

Most overachieved for one simple reason ie the system. We crapped more assists than someone with viral gastroenteritis. In the end when the machine was ageing we salvaged it with RVP but everyone knew it was a temporary issue meant to give SAF his final hurray

I don't mind Jonathan David as long as we sort the creativity issue out + we sign him on a fair fee/salary. If he does well then he will be a bargain. If not then we should be able to recoup most of the money back

Hmmm, Saha was the hottest striker in the league at Fulham. He was a proper complete striker, just couldn't stay fit.

Prior to joining us Saha had 3 seasons in the EPL. His last year with Fulham was astronomical. He was joint 3rd top scorer in the EPL (with RVN) behind Shearer and Henry. Season prior though he scored just 7 goals in 28 matches one of whom in the Intertoto and before that he scored 9 goals in 44 matches. One could argue at the time that it was all down to form and that the 2003-2004 season was an exception rather then the rule.

We signed Saha not because of his name but because he had the right characteristics to succeed at United. We also crapped assists left right and center which meant that you really had to be a donkey not to score goals with United.

We've been relying on the big name upfront to bail us out for more then a decade (RVP, Ibra, Falcao, Lukaku, Cavani etc) I think that United need to act smart this time round. First of all let's address the creativity issue which stems from a defense which is not good enough, an unbalanced CM and flank men who simply do not produce enough assists. Since that we eat most of the budget then we'll have to buy a striker whose cheap and will not ask a silly salary for his services. If that striker does well then we've got our new Ole or Chicarito. If not well selling him for a minimum loss should be pretty straightforward.

Fair point, I just remember him fondly, but I was a teenager so was easily impressed :D .

I agree the striker can be the cherry on the top, a bit like how Arsenal have built their squad. I think they should have got one last summer, but if they snag one this summer, they've got to be favourites for the league next season.

Yeah, I mean if we had Giggs-Scholes-Keane-Beckham in midfield, I'd bet on Brereton-Diaz to get 15 goals here too with a striker partner up top.

Gimenez from Feyenord looks like one to keep an eye on. Good goalscorer at just the right age, and rumoured to be valued at ~€50m.

Hes a proper box striker who would offer a nice alternative to Hojlund for me, and could be good enough to take the #9 role from him - which is what we need, proper competition for once.

Hasn't he proper gone off the boil this season?

I've watched nothing outside of United since my twins were born, so I'm working on 8month old - half remembered highlights at this point.

That Mount fella at Chelsea looks a decent player mind you.

Jonathan David should be an alternative. 24y proven himself the last three seasons scoring 15, 24 and 17(so far). A versatile striker that could cover/rotate with Hojlund as well as playing together with him (as a Second Striker/AM or as a pair if we go that route).
Reminds me somewhat of Gabriel Jesus in his playing style.

Entering his final year so should be attainable for a “fair price”.

He is my first pick. But realistically, he isn’t leaving Villa. Its clear Ten Hag likes a physical technical striker as his front man. Anyone of these strikers are alright for me;

Boniface
Toney
Scamacca
Isak
David
Sesko

I’m leaning towards Toney and Isak as they’re are PL proven.
