Another slugfest of a match here

PBKS chasing another mammoth score and are currently on track to chase it down.

What’s happening/changed this season with all these super high scores and chasing teams not doing too badly either?

I can’t believe batters have just gotten so much better and/or bowlers so much worse?
Do they have drug testing in cricket? Flat pitches is one thing but players seem to have incredible endurance this season

Really pleased with Punjabs win today. Finally, Bairstow showed up. Also, the only unplanned signing, Shashank, has been our player of the season. Incredible batting.

Overall, smallish boundaries and lack of quality in bowlers is the primary reason for all these runfests. Also, I think impact sub rule has made the openers to become particularly unhinged. Now there’s no requirement of one player holding an end while the other is aggressive. Both can attack like Abhishek and Head always do for SRH.

This is certainly the worst IPL I've seen so far. Teams should be allowed to field a couple of bowling machines, they'll save a lot of money.

During the Bodyline series, Australia's captain, Bill Woodfull, said ''there are two teams out there and only one of them is playing cricket''. I'd reword that slightly and say there are two teams out there and none of them are playing cricket. These games are like home run derbies.

Michael Holding said ''I only commentate on cricket'' when asked about why he doesn't commentate on T20. Those comments are ageing well. Cricket is about a contest between bat and ball. In this year's IPL, the contest between bat and ball has been non existent in too many games.

I still enjoy watching people like Yuzi Chahal, Ravi Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav bowl but I'm struggling to enjoy this year's IPL. The fact games take close to 4 hours to complete is bad enough but when what is supposed to be a game of cricket resembles a home run derby, something is obviously wrong.

Bowling has been shocking this season, but I think it would help matters if they got rid of the white ball and played with the red. That would help the bowlers somewhat.

They need to get rid of the impact rule and the pitches need to go back to being what they normally were previously.

Impact rule is not the reason. I feel it is more to do with some flat tracks and some ordinary bowling.

Impact rule helps the batting more than it does the bowling, we have far more good batters than we do bowlers not to mention this will cause more long term issues as all rounders really won't develop if you are never expecting them to bat/bowl.

Also i feel its less ordinary bowling and more bowlers failing to be perfect as they really are turned into bowling machines just not as accurate with no help from the pitch and unless you are bumrah or prime malinga you basically are going to be bashed to all parts.

I agree with the all rounders part but impact rule gives extra bowler as well. Also, it also gives young talents more opportunity. Best example without impact rule probably we would not have seen the likes of asuthosh sharma.

I feel more than the impact rule, it is the pitches and some piss poor bowling which has helped teams to score 250 plus on consistent basis.

FAO Indian cricket watchers:

Any idea why Gaikwad didn’t make the Indian T20 squad for the World Cup? He’s been immense during this IPL. Unlucky to have missed out.
He is an opener and we have way too many of those already, also he is a slow starter like most of our openers, that's why Jaiswal made the cut over shubman.

It’s because we first pick the 3 players with most Instagram followers and then pick the team. There are 3-4 guys in the squad who shouldn’t be there.

Yeah I’m curious to see how Abishek continues to develop. He’s extremely destructive at the top.

Yeah, I guess it’s the last tournament for a few of those “older” guys as well.

He's been a beast in the IPL. I thought India might take him to the World Cup at least as one of the subs to give him experience of this kind of International match setting. Rohit has been a great player over the years, but is probably on the downside. Kohli is still a great player but T20 has never been his best discipline. Abhishek, and players like him are the future. India remind me of some of the old England football teams where you almost had to be 25-26 to even get a sniff of an appearance. When I look at what India has available, they should be blowing out all opposition in T20. Instead they seem to keep making the same tired selections over and over again and coming up short.

Yeah, they have some top young talent. I guess the nature of a T20 match makes it very hard to predict a winner. All it takes is one destructive innings or a few good overs to completely change the course of the match. Used to love the West Indian T20 team with Gayle etc as well. So destructive right down to number 8 or 9

One of my favorite guys to watch came from your neck of the woods; Abraham Benjamin de Villiers. You've had some good ones over the years, my current favorite is Heinrich Klaasen.

Klaasen is so destructive and has probably been the best T20 batsman (with SKY) over the past year perhaps. Yeah, AB was immense. What a talent. Definitely one of our GOATS, up there with Jacques Kallis, Richards and the Pollocks. Just a shame the Proteas are renowned for choking during key moments at tournaments. We really should have bagged a title or 2 by now.

Barry Richards was one of best batsmen I ever saw. Opened for Hampshire with Gordon Greenidge in the early 70s. What a pair they were. Crying shame his international career was destroyed by politics.

Yeah a little before my time so didn’t really watch much, if even anything outside of some highlights, of Richards. But by most accounts, he’s probably our greatest ever. Obviously up for debate but yeah.

Eddie Barlow was another. One of my first memories of "test" cricket was watching England vs Rest of the World in 1970. I think the matches were played because England were supposed to play South Africa but the series was canceled because of the D'Oliveira situation.

On a side note, my aunt used to live next door to Basil D'Oliveira and I used to play with his son Damian whenever I visited.

Oh that’s fantastic. Nice! I attended a a civic awards ceremony a few months ago and D’Oliveira was awarded (posthumously of course) the mayors award, amongst some other capetonians for their service to the city etc. I think it might have actually been his son who accepted the award on his behalf.

I never kept in touch, but I followed his career. Sadly, as you point out, he died fairly young from cancer.

Anyway, good chat bud. Let us not derail this thread any further.

Tomorrow should be a humdinger between SRH & RR. Hoping for a SRH win just to keep things tight and interesting at the top, otherwise the Royals are running away with it into the final.

I'll be pulling for SRH too. They've kind of become my team for this year. Very disappointing last 2 outings though.

This has become a very interesting IPL. Csk losing today means 2nd to 4th position is still quite open.

Tomorrow should be a cracker.

Yeah just love their batting lineup and their 2 openers especially. Abishek and Head have been so destructive. And then Klaasen is still there as well.

RR are no slouches either, with Buttler, Sampson, Jaiswal and even Parag being in some excellent form.

Yeah RR and the KKR seem the 2 form/consistent teams this season, with the rest sort of veering in and out of positions 3-6.

Buttler's not available for the knockouts due to England commitments. This will play a big role..

Same with Phil Salt
