£22m Utd bid for Roon
By NEIL CUSTIS

MANCHESTER UNITED are ready to begin the bidding for Wayne Rooney with a £22million offer.

And Alex Ferguson is convinced he will get the 18-year-old England sensation, whose Euro 2004 campaign ended in injury heartbreak on Thursday night.

High-level talks have taken place at Old Trafford, with the green light given to a move, and United have already made contact with Everton.

Rooney will not sign a new contract at Goodison and make the switch. He has only two years left on his current deal and wants to stay in the North West so he will reject any overtures from Chelsea, whatever their offer.

It leaves United boss Fergie’s bid as Everton’s only option to cash in on the whizkid.

Goodison supremo Bill Kenwright is desperate to keep Rooney at least until the transfer window in January.

He wants to show he is doing everything to keep the player but knows he would have to do a deal with only 18 months left on Rooney’s contract.

OFF ROO GO ... injured Wayne Rooney is substituted

The United board were reluctant to stump up for another big-money signing after spending £130m in the last three years but they know there is a big gap between themselves and Arsenal and Chelsea.

Rooney will also find out today how long he will spend on the sidelines after his Euro 2004 foot injury.

The hitman fractured a metatarsal and will be sent straight to a specialist amid fears of a six-week lay-off.

Everton physio Mick Rathbone revealed he had been in touch with the FA’s medical team throughout the night.

ANKLE RANKLE ... Rooney's foot is twisted in challenge

He said: “We were in constant contact with them as soon as Wayne was injured. He was taken to a Lisbon hospital and his right foot is currently immobilised.

“We’ll take him to our own consultant as soon as possible but it is too early to say how long he will be out.”

Hope it's not gonna be a ronaldinho saga again. All the signs are there though and everything seems to be perfectly in place to stage such a saga tbh...

Yeah, your right. This should be the opportunity for the board to right a big wrong.

Why are we buying another striker??? Unless we're selling Forlan or Ole ....
RVN's performances in the Euro's can also only ignite the Real fire again. I'm still not totally convinced that they won't throw £30m our way.

At least Rooney speaks some english and will not be hiding on a remote beach in brazil.
This should improve communications.

If Everton do sell, I bet Chelski will outbid us all the way for his signature. Not much of a chance unless the Rooney boy refuses to sign for anyone else but us and our offer is not much less than Chelski's.

Whatever, I'm quite happy with our squad as is. Won't be upset if we don't buy again this summer.

The big drop in price here from the reported (and really quite stupid) 50 million pounds gives me the idea that there may be some truth in this.

Well, I''m one who's hoping this story is true. Can you imagine Ronaldo AND Rooney running at a defence?

After the Ronaldinho and Robben transfer saga, I think we're all a bit wary of reading stories that say we have the inside track on a big signing, only for the player to slip through our grasp at the end.

The Times has a similar story today.

I believe that there is something in all these rumours but i don't believe this article. Don't forget it is from the same paper that:
Was 100% sure Ruud was off to Real
Was sure Keane was leaving for Celtic
Links us with a new player every day
Says we are in decline whenever we loose a game
Linked Gerrard AND Morientes to Arsenal in the same week.
Plus god knows how many more.....

But sometimes they get it right.

And as I said earlier, it will if nothing, provoke a response from OT that will indicate if we really are in for him, which is what we all want to know.

Andy Dunn, with The People, was on Sky Sports News this morning and he said that Rooney was a done deal.

In the Daily Mail, they claim that Rooney has indicated to his friends and family that his preference would be United over Chelsea.

The encouraging thing is that all the newspapers seem to indicate that we currently have the edge, although as we've all seen this past year, it can all go horribly wrong.

Even if I were not a United fan I would still say that if the boy had to go he'd be better off going to United.

Either that or stay put.

He's a North-West lad and comes from a close-knit family (inter-family brawls notwithstanding). Chelsea have become a cold club and would not look after him like he'd be looked after at United. I think Moyes knows that.

Say what you like, Fergie looks after his players. He stands up for them right or wrong. All he asks in return is loyalty, hard work, and for them to keep their feet on the ground. Compared to Beckham Rooney is a dream for a bloke like Fergie. The boy could not be in better hands. Thats good for him, good for United....and England.

The wilderness that Beckham now finds himself in is testament to the care and protection he got at United. He has nowhere to turn at this time and believe me the guy is in a world of shit. Its written all over him.

Money can't buy everything and those people who have Rooneys interests at heart would do well to remember that.

No doubt.

He'd be mad to spurn the chance to play for United.

I think he wants to come to United, according to various rumours I've heard.

If that's indeed the case. Then we'll have our man.

We could offer Everton 10m less than Chelsea and we'll still be in the box seat, very much like Real last season when they bought Becks.

It all depends on what Rooney wants. More cash or the chance to play for the biggest club in the land.......and still not have to move location.

I know what I'd prefer.

With Ruud, Saha and Smith being the only realistic competition for the 2 up front roles. Rooney would just mean that we got a massive headache.
I would love to see Rooney sign but we got Smith. I know healthy competition is good but having 4 class players fighting for 2 places is stupid. Midfield is ther area we must strengthen as we need replacements for Keane and Giggs soon.
We got Ronaldo who can play right or left which is great but i still think he plays best on the right and we need someone to replace Giggs who will probably hang up his boots in 2 seasons IMO. Duff would be ideal. Then there is Keane, we aint got anyone to fill his boots and we need someone of a similar nature. Gerrard springs to mind.
We got flair now with Ronaldo, creativity with Scholes, solidity with Keane and penetration with Giggs. But we will be losing our solidity and penetration wen Giggs and Keane go.
So instead of filling up with strikers splash the cash on midfield, as if we are to compete with the Chelsea and Arsenal midfield in seasons to come we need central replacements.

Spot on. United have a great record on bringing through young players.

I think Rooney would be ok to sit on the bench in the beginning. We still have time to replace Keane and Giggs, at least one more year then we know if someone has taken the step up like Fletcher.

Yeah... Remember when it backfired on us in 98/99...
I am arguing about buying a 4th striker to contend for 2 places wen we need to strengthen the midfield. In 98/99 we had Giggs and Keane around about their peak and Scholes and Beckham established home grown talent. Now in 2004 we got a Keane and Giggs past their peak (still quality, but past it) and no Beckham. Scholes is still amazing and we got Ronaldo who has made us forget about Beckham alot easier.
We need depth in the squad but we gotta strenghen the areas that need strengthening. Once we bulstered up our midfield i dont care if we buy 4 strikers but wen its at the cost of a weak midfield we shud buy MIDFIELDERS!
99 we had strong midfield 04 we have a strong midfield BUT its coming to an end.

Look at this!

Cash bonanza for Rooney

English soccer giant Manchester United is set to bid nearly $60 million for England and Everton teenage sensation Wayne Rooney, British newspapers said.

Rooney, 18, was said to favour a move to United rather than big-spender Chelsea, The Sun and Daily Mail reported.

United will, according to The Sun, bid $57 million for the striker, whose four goals in as many games for England at Euro 2004 made him possibly the hottest talent in world soccer.

Rooney, who limped off during England's quarter-final defeat against Portugal with a broken bone in his foot, will be offered $235,000 a week to switch to Old Trafford, The Sun said.

The Daily Mail said United would bid an initial $60 million for Rooney, who according to the paper has made clear to his family and friends that he would prefer a move to United.

Im sure the sun article says 22 million not the suggested 40 million(60 million dollars!) and 235,000 a week thats a joke, im sure this article has got its money translations wrong.
