Ritchie Torres, a Democrat who represents the area, told The Associated Press. “Most of these buildings have no sprinkler system. And so the housing stock of the Bronx is much more susceptible to devastating fires than most of the housing stock in the city.”

For the same reason houses and lives get destroyed by hurricanes every year, yet they continue to build houses out of balsa wood.

Don’t think it’s only here.

Florida has gotten better since Andrew in 1992, but so many buildings predate newer regulations & we see horrors like this.
