According to CIES Football Observatory here are the 20 most expensive squads in football.

Would be really interesting to see some practical measure applied to evaluate the 20 most valuable squads.

1) Manchester City - €1.014bn

2) Paris Saint-Germain - €913m

3) Real Madrid - €902m

4) Manchester United - €751m

5) Juventus - €719m

6) Barcelona - €697m

7) Liverpool - €639m

8) Chelsea - €561m

9) Atletico Madrid - €550m

10) Arsenal - €498m

11) Everton - €486m

12) Tottenham - €465m

13) AC Milan - €408m

14) Inter Milan - €364m

15) Bayern Munich - €352m

16) Monaco - €348m

17) Napoli - €325m

18) Borussia Dortmund - €321m

19) Leicester - €312m

20) Valencia - €266m

Top 4 in all of Europe in terms of expense , but not even in the top division(CL) in terms of quality.

That Bayern figure is surprising, especially in comparison to Dortmund. German pragmatism.

They hadn't spent in ages, relied on Robbery for a decade. They changed it up a bit this summer though, so did Real, I'd assume if it weren't for this window, Real would be like 7th, and Bayern at 20th.

Whatever you say about the Glazers but we spent a lot of money under three different manager with a different style of play and had a shit scouting network that havent improved until 2016 following a massive overhaul.

We place our faith in our policy of backing manager to get the player they want. We gave them £950m pounds to spend over 5 years, any manager would kill for it to have a budget like this. Moyes, LVG, and Jose spent a lot of money on a player that hasn't worked out so well for us.

I think we're improving in term of recruitment, Maguire, James, and AWB have been brilliant for us and they got nominated as a Player of the month for August. As much as it pains me to say, this is the best recruitment we had since 2006 when we signed Carrick, Evra, and Vidic in the same year. I hope we can do again like this for next year.

Everton above Bayern, Spurs and the Milans? Didnt think they had spent that much.

I guess when you consider Spurs got Eriksen and Alli for a pittance and Kane was free.

Some positives:
- We are top 4 in Europe!
- We are ahead of Barca, Juventus and Liverpool!

More positives:
- City outspent us by over 250m, what a terrible club!

So Arsenal aren't getting back into the top 4 no matter what spin they put on the table!

I don't think it's that simple. They probably calculated with inflation.

"The algorithm estimating transfer values exclusively developed by the CIES Football Observatory allows for the calculation of inflation. Indeed, the statistical model includes a variable for the year during which the paid transfers included in the sample were carried out. The differences observed at the level of this variable thus reflect the annual variations of prices, all other factors being equal. This analysis shows that there was a +181% inflation since 2011 and that the average growth rate for the five last years was +25.8%."

Regarding PSG, in 2011, the team was full of third-class players, which partly explains the amount spent.

The numbers are presumably adjusted, yes. Would be close to worthless if they weren't given how old some of the transfers are.

People that blame the Glazers are completely short sighted. They have spent enough money to be challenging for major trophies. It's not their fault other people have wasted it.

some have suggested infaltion but i think there may be another reason (possibly as well)which is currency as the figures are reported in euros

eg Martial cost £35M in 2014 £35m today is around €38.5m (at 1.11 exchange rate) but in 2014 that was €49.7m... basically €50m (at 1.42 exchange rate)... then of course there was an extra £7.2m (I assume this was written into the contract in Euros at the time rather than £ as Im sure monaco would not have held the currency risk on that and put it back on united so the extra £7.2 would actually have been about €10m

so simply with the clause and euro conversions that martial from £35 to €60 and a similar conversion would need to be done on the other figures as well

Yeah doesn't make sense to me either, as soon as we offloaded Lukaku the value of our squad should have gone right down. Unless the OP is using current valuation which in itself is highly debatable given what we're actually seeing on the pitch

4th most expensive squad in world football and we don't even look like a top six PL side.
