Starts next Friday.

No real buzz for these games. Time difference is a killer. Also Pyeongchang is such an uninspiring choice. If it's anything like the Biathlon World Championships a few years ago...

I'm very hyped. Shame that I won't be able to watch skiing live though. A lot of other events might be fine.

Hirscher for skiing and Domracheva for biathlon, I'd like for them to get some golds.

Probably ladies figure skating. Even that has died down with the Russian ban and lack of real 'starpower' like Kim Yu Na had during the Sochi and Vancouver games.

What's the signature event for this games? 100m men for example is the one for the Summer games.
Men's hockey final maybe. Downhill men if you're only talking about individual events. Extremely tough and prestigious.

Disappointed that them Koreans don't have the races start at 4:00 in the morning to allow us Europeans prime time TV.

Without NHL players? I'd go with Downhill men.

I started some legendary winter sports threads back in the day. Even had a Tour de Ski thread. None of them made it past page one.

Would love to see Aksel get a downhill gold. Should be competing for medals on all the alpine disicplines on the mens side.

Agree that the signature event probably is the hockey final. Anything but the Swedes goes there.

The winter olympics, unlike the summer olympcnuts, have some cool events. Lots of spectacular crashes & cockups with people breaking stuff. I wonder how much kimchi will be consumed during the games?

I'm going to some of this despite having never watched the Winter Olympics on tv. Feck it, should be an experience if only done once.

It’s always good to have an Olympics of either variety on TV. Been enjoying this mornings events.

Dahlmeier is just so calm under pressure. Great performance to win her first Olympic gold medal.

I think the 50km cross country or the relay (cross country or biathlon), atleast for most Norwegians.

Ice hockey isn't very big in Europe, the only countries here i think really care about that, is Sweden, Finland and Russia.
There are other decent countries, but it's mainly those 3 plus USA and Canada.

I really hate that i have to stay up after work at night to watch it, i probably rather go to bed :(

I find it quite interesting that the UK is probably the only big country that doesn't care much about the winter olympics, in Europe. Especially since they are generally very into sports.

Haven't checked the times yet, since i'll most likely either be sleeping or working.
The 50km is usually the last one for the cross country skiiers, so probably one of the last 2 days.

Decent start for the noggies. Shame about Bjørgen on the 15k, but it was the perfect distance and course for Kalla.

Speed skating isn't half entertaining carnage.

They even have a hilariously flawed (and long) review process that adds to the chaos.

What a sport.

Is there anywhere to watch full replays of events? I see the CBC website has it but I can't watch it since it is region locked to Canada. Any other sites to watch or free way to get around the geo blocking on CBC?

And our boy Wellinger won the thing, I'm delighted for him :)

Great first day for the German athletes with wins by Laura Dahlmeier and Andreas Wellinger.

Btw, Norway clearly won the mustache competition :D

Tomorrow is the definition of an ultra marathon sports sunday. The schedule (in Oslo time): 0200 mens slopestyle finals, 0300 mens downhill, 0715 mens cross country 30k, 1215 mens biathlon sprint, 1515 nufc - mufc, 1730 soton - lfc.

Wish me luck.

Big event for me is the DH. Would make the Olympics if Aksel won it.

Why are all the snowboard competitions at 2am? I'll probably fall asleep while the noggies win their first gold.
