Is that what will happen if one of them win their group and the other finish second?Buzzing if we get that Korea v Japan last 16 tie.
I'm in Seoul at the moment doing a bit of work, all the Koreans I work with going nuts. Huge rivalry.
If Korea win the group (almost guaranteed) and Japan come 2nd (also now highly likely) that's the R16 game yep.Is that what will happen if one of them win their group and the other finish second?
I was kind of hoping for those two in the final to get the ultimate stakes, although I guess being guaranteed that game is better than nothing. Are there any other cool rivalries in the AFC?

Moriyasu's priority for his goalkeeper is the one who can play the ball with his feet and has great ball-distribution skills. Suzuki isn't the real number 1 goalkeeper of Japan. Moriyasu wants to try this kid as the number-one position since he is only 21 years old, and everyone doesn't know what his mind thinking of. I get the point that he wants to try this kid since Gonda (the number 1 goalkeeper in WC 2022) is 35 years old this year. However, they still have at least 3 goalkeepers who I think are better than him at not conceding a goal at the post.Fair play to Iraq. They were the best team in the first half and they fought well.
Japan's goalkeepers are so shite. That Zion guy (who was linked to us last summer by the way!) has made a huge blunder two games in a row now. I remember a pretty big mistake last world cup too, although that was a different goalkeeper.
I'm starting to think that South Korea will walk this tournament. They have so many good, in-form players now. Son, Kim, Lee and Hee-chan just to name a few.
We met in the 2015 final where Australia beat us in extra time. Coincidentally, Ange was their manager while Son played for us and scored the equalizer.Japan vs. Korea
Iran vs. Korea
Iraq vs. Iran
Japan vs. Saudi
Saudi vs. Qatar at a push since 2017
Australia is a funny case. They’ve been in AFC for twenty years, yet they are yet to play either Korea or Iran in a formal match (either WC qualifiers or Asian Cup).
For some strange reason, literally every single WCQ campaign you have Saudi/Japan/Aussies on one side, and Iran/Korea on another.
this AsianCup would have been the same bracket wise had all 5 won their groups as expected. With Japan now losing to Iraq, things get a bit more exciting.
Yeah, the gap between the big boys and those belonging a tier below seems to have considerably narrowed.Been enjoying this tbh.
I hope we manage to beat Tajikistan (tough team) and go through to the R16 for the first time.
No team has impressed me (from the favorites) so far but I'm expecting them to pick up for in the next round.
Completely escaped my mind.We met in the 2015 final where Australia beat us in extra time. Coincidentally, Ange was their manager while Son played for us and scored the equalizer.
It's weird.Yeah, the gap between the big boys and those belonging a tier below seems to have considerably narrowed.

Middle Eastern teams are never easy to play against especially away at their region, and Jordan is no exception as all of our wins against them were 1-0, with another 2-2 in a WC qualifier before that. Nobody really seemed up for it this match either besides Kim Min Jae who was basically stopping everything on his own. What a result for Jordan it would have been if they could have hold on for few more minutes, but not a bad result in the end 2-2 against S. Korea
I agree that it's bit of a 'so close yet so far' situation. While the gap has considerably narrowed like you I don't think Iraq and Qatar can consistently compete with Japan and South Korea just yet. It's weird.
On paper, Japan should walk this with Iran as 2nd favourites. South Korea are playing well with a lot of local players though and they've been the most impressive so far.
Iraq have been investing heavily in their infrastructure and are very active now when it comes to players born abroad. I think the gap will get smaller as more nations are looking into players born abroad but I don't see anyone consistently breaking into that top tier any time soon (Japan, Korea, Iran, SA, Australia).
I've been enjoying it a lot though.
Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Jordan are making a lot of effort now to attract players from their respective diaspora.I agree that it's bit of a 'so close yet so far' situation. While the gap has considerably narrowed like you I don't think Iraq and Qatar can consistently compete with Japan and South Korea just yet.
Another gap that has also narrowed is between the likes of China or Oman or the UAE with, say, Lebanon or Indonesia or Vietnam. Interesting times in the AFC.
I know Japan somehow lost to Iraq, but I'm not sure the gap has narrowed at the top.I agree that it's bit of a 'so close yet so far' situation. While the gap has considerably narrowed like you I don't think Iraq and Qatar can consistently compete with Japan and South Korea just yet.

China has got a lot worse in the last decade or so, no goal and basically out of the Asian Cup barring a miracle. The Central Asian teams are making the much expected step up with the progress their youth teams have been making lately. Uzbekistan look strong with some fine young players, Tajikistan have been impressive.
China still messing about, just doesn't look like the increased spots for Asia is going to result in a Chinese participation in the WC anytime soon.
Out of curiosity (maybe someone else in here knows): are there any good players with Indian dual citizenship who would also be likely to join the Indian national team if this rule didn't exist?Edit, I've googled this and found out that India won't call up anyone with dual nationality. Mental.

There were a few who wanted to represent India, like Michael Chopra but as you've said, the FA doesn't call up dual nationals. It's always been a surprise to me how shit India always seem to be.
Every Indian I've ever met loves football.
There has to be a few people in the English game who qualify via the grandparents rule, don't they ever get picked for the national team or are there literally none to pick on the first place?

I don't think there's any really top, top players but there's simply got to be handful of at least Championship level guys who would be significantly better than those starting at this tourney for India.Out of curiosity (maybe someone else in here knows): are there any good players with Indian dual citizenship who would also be likely to join the Indian national team if this rule didn't exist?
If I was in charge I'd scrap the rule and tempt these dual citizen players with Bollywood babes
