Somehow I have never come around to play a game of either of these popular series. Fate always seemed to interfere. Which one should I go for (not interested in the other AC games. This one SEEMS different from the streams I've seen on PS4 Live)?

Mass Effect is brilliant. The first and the second Mass Effect are some of the best games made on the last 10 years. The third game is decent but with an overwhelming ending (which makes it even worse considering that it is the ending of the trilogy). But still it is a hundred hours well spend on those three games and a very fun and memorable journey.

I could never get into Assassin's Creed myself. Feels like you're just running around doing the exact same stuff - particularly if you're going to play all the games.

Mass Effect on the other hand is brilliant. Great story. In my opinion it's not even a competition between the two series - Mass Effect is classes above.

Is Mass Effect a bit like Dragon Age Inquisition in Space?

Not really. It's more like the earlier DA games with smaller zones. Much more story-driven than Inquisition.

I never could get into assassins creed, but i loved black flag.
Never tried Mass Effect, though it's been repeatedly been highly recommended to me since i'm a huge rpg fan.
My love for rpg's are mostly down to old-school final fantasy turn-based battle-systems though...

I say, do both.

Black Flag is great fun - the ME trilogy is simply stunning though.

ME2 is one of my favourite games ever. I would recommend playing it.

If you haven't played the Mass Effect series you owe it to yourself to at least try it. Stunning series of games.

Fly through ME 1, its easily the weakest of the series. 2 and 3 are excellent
Obviously depends on what you like. But let's not turn this thread into a discussion that's already been done countless of times in the ME threads.

Ignore anything Randall says for videogames. You can't go wrong by doing so. @Kevin

Btw, Mass Effect isn't like Inquisition on space. However it has some similarities with Dragon Age Origins. And it is basically a KOTOR clone but without the Star Wars part. It is also one of the most emotional games I've played. And finally, it isn't a FPS so if you're imaging it as a shooter, then avoid it cause it isn't a shootee. It is a brilliant old school RPG though, with amazing story, companions, big moments and lots of exploration. Oh and @Count Orduck, he might be the only one here who loves that game more than me. Soon he'll write a formatted essay why ME is the best game ever and why BW now sucks.

Mass Effect by a country mile.

Also ignore Randall, ME1 is one you want to take your time with.

ME. Go adept in 1, eh... I don't remember for 2 (not adept; soldier/vanguard/infiltrator maybe?), vanguard in 3.

ME1 and ME3:MP were the highlights of the series for me...

Play Mass Effect through properly and don't listen to Randall. The saves carry over from game to game so you want to do as much as possible. Especially since carrying over a save from ME1 to ME2 will see you start out with a nice resource bonus meaning you'll be able to avoid a bit of the tedious resource scanning.
Also Mass Effect is a shooter. Just not a first-person one. ME1 less so than the two sequels though.

:D

I won't. I'll resist.

Mass Effect is one of the best games I ever played. Mass Effect 2 was much weaker overall, in my opinion (though undoubtedly stronger for the actual gameplay mechanics and combat), and Mass Effect 3 was an abomination. That's all I'll say.

Sometimes I get the urge to replay Mass Effect because, to me, it was just that good, but I can't bring myself to do it when I know how it all comes together. Still, if you're not as tetchy as me and want to give something new a try, the Mass Effect trilogy are a really great place to start. @Kevin

I agree with 1 being the best. It's also good to see so many finally seeing Randall as I do ;)

I don't agree with the other two having better gaming mechancs, more polished maybe, but they were deliberately 'streamlined' (read: dumber) to appeal the the cod generation more. And to me that left it more in the realms of mediocre shooter looking at it that way. And I hate all that.

Still a great trilogy overall and waaaay better than anything done in the AC series, to head back on topic.

Love you Lambo! (not in a gay way).

Have been saying this for a long time, but people don't listen. I thought that ME has the better gameplay. First of all, spending skill points mattered. Then you start as a noob but you see yourself progressing all the way. Each bos fighs requires some strategy and planning. Your efficiency isn't based on your reflexes but on how strong your character is. You have loads of weapon/armour customization. Etc etc

ME2 and ME3 look better but that's it. Their gameplay is pretty much the same as in any shooter of the last few years. Their RPG elements (on gameplay, not in story) are non-existent. Instead of imaginative places, they have straight corridors. Significantly dumbed down from the first one (although the second game redeemed itself by having amazing companions and amazing companion missions).

Aye, let me qualify what I meant. In terms of gameplay I think it was shallower, less RPG-y, so I didn't phrase it very well.

What I meant was the combat (the actual action) was improved. Better cover mechanics, the addition of a special ability for each class really added to the visceral feel. Sometimes the gunfights could be a touch disappointing in Mass Effect 1.

However, in adding to the combat, they streamlined everything else and made it worse. For what it's worth, I actually liked the Mako segments - they'd only have been better if they hadn't used the same cut & paste buildings for the side-missions. A better improvement in ME2 would have been more variety on the planets, not culling the idea completely in favour of that fecking iridium scanning.

However, I must say, that whilst Mass Effect is by far my favourite and I feel like it did pretty much everything better than its successors, the best side-mission in the game (so not main plot mission) is actually in Mass Effect 2. The DLC "Overlord" is just... amazing. That twist at the end

A bit harsh to call Mass Effect 3 an abomination.

Its actually an amazing finale until about the last 20 minutes.

Mass Effect.

Whilst OG Mass Effect is fantastic, it's pretty meh combat wise compared to the sequels. If you've any interest in sci-fi you'll love it. A must play trilogy.

You can also bone this one hot blue Alien chick.

Get the "extended cut" DLC for ME3 and the ending can be decent

I am not a huge fan of Assassins Creed but I cannot deny Black Flag is a fantastic game.

But ME all the way from me. If you have never played them before I envy you. You get to experience all the awesomeness for the first time.

Assassins Creed 2 is a fantastic game. Very underrated I reckon and on another level to every game in its series.

I loved Black Flag. I don't usually try to get 100% in games, but this is one of the few that I enjoyed enough to try.

The Assassin's Creed franchise is much easier to dip in and out of. You could probably complete each game in about a week of casual gaming. It's a fun series to play.

Personally Black Flag was huge surprise to me after okayish Revelations and boring AC III. Building your ship into a swimming fortress and joining battles between two huge Royal fleets is still a blast, especially after obvious fail of Unity. There was so much new stuff in Black Flag that this game easily stands on it's own. Most epic game in the series by far. You can screw the main campaign and just explore the islands and cities which have tons of quest, hidden riddles, maps, even little stuff like tavern games such as game of checkers... It's a complete action adventure game. My favorite AC is still Brotherhood but Black Flag is just bigger... juggernaut size bigger.

Mass Effect trilogy... no matter which chapter you'll play, just like Assassin's Creed it can be epic entertainment. First game perfectly introduced everything. Characters, cultures, space races and shit that is about to hit the fan in the whole civilized territories of space and effects of it are seen in Mass Effect 2 and 3 which are full of new upgrades, especially gameplay wise which in newer games is way more fluid... however villain from the first game is still the best. Saren had everything and is simply great manipulator, agent and terrorist in one.

Choosing one is unfair. Go for both and enjoy the living fun out if it.

Thanks. Yeah i came to your conclusion as well so I've bought gta v instead.

I will be starting those games later. I've read about how shit the Mass Effect 3 ending is and dont feel compelled to emotionally invest in a quest which ends in an unsatisfying ending.

Any GTA game is a safe choice in that regard. You get exactly what you want without any weird surprises. Gaming's free market rule number one, I guess.

The ending in Mass Effect 3 was so shit they had to release a special DLC to patch it up but it still feels like an unfinished story with a black hole in the end. Probably a commercial stunt to make the fourth one... No idea how it's gonna happen.
