Assist for own goals?

I'm sure he does get the assist. I remember Hazard being given the assist for something similar earlier this season.
 
An assist is a contribution to a goal, so that covers OGs and if you have a shot saved by the keeper or post, then it is tapped in (like Evans last night).
 
It should be an assist at least, I count it as an assist at any rate.
 
Opta don't count it as an assist. Transfermarkt do. Different criteria. For example, Rooney was credited with an assist, after the goalkeeper saved his header, for Van Persie's goal against Stoke. I stick to Transfermarkt for assists, but Opta for more in depth statistics.
 
Can you get an Assist and a Goal for the same Goal?

I didntthink you could, but as the player who wins the penalty usually gets an assist, surely that means its possible?

No you can't. That would basically be like hitting the post and scoring the rebound yourself. You wont get an assist for that.
 
The best assists are simple five yard passes to Messi who then dribbles past four or five players before burying it.
 
Assists are a nonsense and should not be used in any logical argument in justifying how good a player is. Rooney probably gets one for Evans' goal last night when he was trying to score, not "assist" anyone.
 
He should just be awarded the goal, the free kick was probably going in the corner if nobody touched it. Would be the third time he's scored with a cross this year as well.
 
That was definitely his assist, and should count as assists. The debatable one is when he shot and Evans tapped in the rebound, but it can go both ways.
 
Surely the OG should count as Rooney's goal? I thought the rule was that if it was heading to be on target then it counted? Rooney's cross would have clearly been on target had no one been in the way.

Not sure I agree with that. Fair enough some assists don't require much work from the assister (i.e. falling over and it bobbling out to Ronaldo) but literally just falling over? That's not an assist.

"Contributing to a goal", so ya a foul is setting up a goal. I didnt realise this until fantasy league a few years a go, it just depends on its loose definition.

Could just as easily give the assist to the bloke who committed the foul. I know it technically fits the vague definition but I don't think you should be credited an assist for getting fouled.
 
Who gets the assist when a keeper boots the ball upfield and scores?

The last teammate to touch the ball? The last opposing player? Imagine getting an assist for a keeper scoring against your own keeper.

Nobody, I would assume, as a goalkeeper having the ball would implicate a change of direction of play.
 
Assists aren't a part of the laws of the game so it's up to the official stats counters to make the criteria. A free kick like Rooney's will always be an assist. If there's an own goal, the player that shot or passed the ball gets the assist.
Commonly it's also an assist if your shot is saved and then another players gets the rebound and scores. Also, the player who wins a penalty or free kick that's scored directly from gets an assist.

No one gets the assist. Just like if a player scores directly from a corner or goes on a solo run. The last one is a matter of opinion. There are grey areas.

It does sound bollocks that Young or whoever can do a blatant dive for a penalty and get an assist for it. Makes a mockery of tbe whole thing.
