Serena's comeback was awesome....

fact is, she was half fit..and..5-1 down, even then the belgian lass couldn't beat her!

Her technique was spot on.

great stuff.

jealousy.

The Williams sisters are plain and simply supreme athletes... Serena inparticular.(i like her juggs btw)

i think they would have battered any tennis player in history...including Graf at her peak.

Serena showed enough skill today..... her volleys were excellent...and she hit the line everytime, when in trouble in the last set...... if that isn't 'great skill' then i don't know what the feck is.

i think people don't like the sport being dominated by two people. Those two are unbeatable.....IMO

The US has a different mentality, they applaud champions..... we in Europe, love losers...... only in the UK would someone like Eddy the Eagle Edwards make it famous.

funny that what with some of my best friends being black

nothing to do with the yank thing either one of my fave sports is in yankville and nearly the whole league is made up of yanks

so really its just people sick of them being in every final and looking like they let one or the other win

its getting like F1

but then am i german bashing? or is it because schumie is white

Ruddy:

i suppose the same way people get sick when United win the title every year.....(near enough).

You can't compare tennis to F1, coz all the cars are different, the ferraris are probably the best..... give Schumaker a VW golf gti and we'll see how good he is. ;) (altho he's regarded as the best driver regardless of what car he drives).

Serena and Venus are the best.....and they deserve the titles, they win.

So why not give the players who can't beat them the stick?

And if they do let each other win, why would one win 3 in a row? Surely they'd alternate it?

Ruddy, my post wasn't a personal indictment against you, but more of a general obervation on my part about how the Williams sisters little respect from the European tennis public despite having learned the sport from their father (who himself learned by reading books). They've achieved so much and yet get criticized for no reason.

Oh come on. It has nothing to do with the fact they're black. Yannick Noah was very popular. There are lots of popular black sportsmen.

As for being Americans blah blah bullshit once again. Agassi is very popular in Europe, and Evert was too.

After all, last year YOU said that you didn't think they were sexy, despite praising their muscles. So if I was like you I could say : why ? Because they're black ?

so what are you implying??

You don't like them because they're too good/dominant?

If thats the case....then do you have a problem with United? we've been winning trophies left, right and centre....

maybe its boring for fans of other players..but its upto the rest to show they can match the Williams'...kinell i can recall Mike Tyson, knocking out fighters before the third round, regurlary.... no one complained..... he was just so bloody good..... like venus and serena.

no?

TV ratings will drop if these 2 continue to dominate like F1 and schumacher. Unfortunately there will be no change in this in the next years as they're so young and these are something completely new. 190 long fecking boldybuilders who serve 200 kph, freaks they are. Basically breathed for playing tennis.

Lets be honest here, 99 percent do not want to see either of these near the final. they have power and nothing else. Take a look at Henin, she has perfect technique, small she is but hits fairly hard. These 2 fecking monsters win because they outmuscle their opponents. This the future of female tennis?

I don't like the Formula 1 and I don't like Schumacher. Raoul will say that I'm anti-German, but my mother has a German origins and a German name. I don't like Mike Tyson too, I'm probably racist but my father happens to be black

I don't know for the rest of Europe but I remember an interview given by Venus and Serena's father when they were starting : " my daughters will be number ones one day, nobody will be able to beat them etc..." This is why they were disliked, people thought "how pretentious is that family" etc... Eventually he was right because he annonced what was going to happen but people didn't like those words. They had also the impression that they had been programmed by their father.

Serena and Venus are interested in other things than tennis, they have learnt French for example, I approve that. I admire the champions and I like them as persons but I think that female tennis should keep its specificities. What will be the evolution ? Girls taller and taller, as muscled as men, hitting the ball more and more stronger? What's the interest ? We have already men. And the risk is to see other women trying unnaturally to be as trong as them.

This is why I like Henin. She brings another way of playing, she's not as strong but she's more subtle. But it's just my opinion.

As for United, I'm glad they often win (but I've seen them winning the champion's league only once...) but probably if I was the supporter of another team it would bore me.

so... you don't like their style.... is that right?

ok, i can understad that...however, graf and seles were also big hitters, no one complained. I can recall Steffi coming onto the scene, she was stronger and more powerful than the other players....

Today I saw Serena make an amazing comeback, she was injured.....and was facing a likely defeat, yet, she showed the heart of a champion.. Serena won some amazing points, her volleying was excellent....as were her shots that hit the line on many occassions, showing how accurate she is..which i mentioned above, now even i can see that the lass has awesome skill....

If the others can't compete, perhaps they should join another sport ;)

as for Clusters or whatever she's called.... tough! she didn't deserve to win, she had a great chance and blew it.... i can't feel sorry for her.

Question of style, yes. I've never been a fan of Steffi Graf, as for Seles, at the time her style was very new but I like Seles for other reasons. What has happened to her was so unfair (and she has praised Fab in an interview ! .)

During the sixties there were two cyclists always competing for the Tour de France, Anquetil and Poulidor. One always won the Tour de France, the second was far more popular. So now we have this expression "le Poulidor de..." to design a loser that people like. So yes, may be they pay the price for winning everything. Obviously they're great champions...

Still, you say "if the others can't compete..." but it's unfair for talented players who don't have the chance to be 1,80 m and have big muscles...Or it should be like in boxing, several competitions considering your weight...

Steffi was very similar...and she dominated in the same way! but how many people complained? not as many people are doing these days.

Perhaps the competitions crap..... Henin and co are average players.. Henin might have good skill....but she's too lightweight...i doubt any of them could beat the likes of Graf and Seles at their peak.

like i said, its up to the rest...

BTW did you like Boris Becker when he came on to the scene and won Wimbledon at the age of 17???

Graf wasn't as popular at the beginning of her career (people prefered Sabatini)than at the end. I've read it was the same for Navratilova.

To say Henin is average is a disgrace. She couldn't express herself against Venus, but her tennis is just beautiful.

As for Becker, I've always prefered the man to the player.

There's nothing wrong with the Williams tennis. It might be less accurate than some of the other top players, but not by much, and they are simply stronger.

I don't like to see the sport dominated by two players, but hey - if they are better than the rest of them... It's the problem of the rest of them! I think Clijsters can be a good opponent though so we may not see complete domination.

Beautiful losers. This a book written by the great Leonard Cohen ;)

I must say I often feel sorry for losers. I don't like to see a player lose 6-0,6-0.

Henin is a worse choker than Clijsters. That is what is holding her back as much as anything.

Tennis goes in cycles. The first player to overpower other women physically was Billie Jean King(the most important figure in women's sport history). Thn the "finesse" players caught up. Navratilova then took it to the next level. Again the rest caught up. Same with Graf, then Seles, now the Williams. All at the time of their dominance were resented and considered "bad for the game". Tennis evolved and their dominance came to an end. It will happen to the Williams' too. Such is life.

I think the Williams sisters don't play nice tennis...they just whack the ball so hard that the other hardly has a chance...when'z the last time they played the drop-shot...had a long marathon...NEVER (only when they play each other)...so even though other players dominated ..they played fancy tennis which people loved to watch.....

p.s I'm a Ferrari Fan and a Schmi fan..supporting him for around 8yrs....enjoyin the success as long as he has it...

Lucky germans again ;)

Schuttler gets a bye against Safin, then gets a Roddick who is both injured and tired.

Agassi in three sets in the final, quite comfortably.

Your analogy is limited in that the Williams sisters are already much more successfull than Noah was.

Another bullshit point. Agassi and Evert were very successful - BUT they weren't black and didn't bring a decidedly different culture to the sport.

I don't think they're particularly attractive, but I do think they're fantastic tennis players. Just look at where womens tennis is today compared to where it was 10-20-30 years ago. The TV ratings and fan interest is at an all time high, which wouldn't be the case if tennis was controlled by boring finesse players like Henin and Mauresmo.

You had black successful sportsmen who were very popular in Europe, like Carl Lewis, wasn't he ? Michael Jordan was popular too. And why a"different culture". In what way their culture is "different" just because they're black ? They're American, that's all.

Anyway don't exagerate. Nobody has ever booed them when they were playing in Europe. Hingis has been whistled in Roland Garros, if she had been black and American you would have said it's anti-americanism and racism. Why always searching for bad reasons whe people have other opinions than you ?

So you think Mauresmo and Henn are boring. Mauresmo has a lot of strenght and if she had a good mental she could match the Williams sisters. Henin has a fantastic backhand, and I enjoy her games. I don't think a player is boring just because he doesn't hit the ball as strongly as others. I can see old tennis games on a TV channel, EPSN Classic Sports, sometimes I see Mc Enroe, he played beautifully without being extremely powerful.

Another problem is that the Williams sisters don't play their best tennis when they meet each other in big finals, because of the emotion to have to face a close sister.

Again your puking out irrelevant examples. Carl Lewis and Jordan dominated sports where black athletes have always dominated. The Williams Sisters happen to be dominating a sport that has seen an extreme few black athletes play at a Championship level in it's history. They also happen to sisters who routinely face each other in finals, and in the process shut out alot of European players. They also happen to be Americans. There's alot of anti americanism in Europe that is based in politics and eventually bleeds over into Sport. Take all three of these reasons and you've got a world load of jealousy thats being aimed at them. The best part about it is that Venus and Serena never talk bad about anyone who criticizes them. They just keep winning. :D

No, there are not the reasons . Tiger Woods is American, black, and he 's successful in a sport usually dominated by white people. Stop thinking people are jealous of America when most of the times your sportsmen, musicians, writers, actors, white or black, are praised and admired here, much more than ours in the States ! The William sisters are not hated, they got many press coverage here.
I'm sure that if they manage to play well when they meet each other people will stop saying : "it's becoming boring to see them in finals".

If you knew how much I don't give a f*** about these "Americans vs Europeans"...

This is true Elfie, and people always think they must be fixing the results whereas nobody can understand the problems of playing your sibling one on one in the pinnacle events of your sport.

Nobody remembers that the Maleeva sisters(all top 10 players at one time or another I believe) all had terrible matches. I think it was very rare that the younger sister beat the older sister with them. Yet they were never accused of fixing results.

Yes but the Maleeva sisters have never won any big final. I never believed that story of "fixed games" anyway concerning the Williams sisters, otherwise the father would have "balanced" the tropheys (one for Venus, the other for Serena). The fact that Serena has won three main tropheys in a row last year show these are bad rumours.

That's the biggest piece of shite i've ever read. This has nothing to do with racism.

Why did everyone make fun of the East German female swimming team in the early and mid-80s?

1. They were not American
2. They were not Black

They were just unnaturally big women who did swim the shit out of normal girls, at least justifying some doubt about the natural source of their immense muscles and power.

It's the same thing.

There are actually two presenters of a morning radio show here in Belgium who will be suid for making fun of them... A world gone mad...

Why is everyone interested in bringing up other cases that have absolutely no analogous value to the unique situation the Williams sisters are going through. Anyway...they're playing right now. Go Williams. :D

Polemics aside, Serena has won once again. Sid must be overjoyed ;) Must be hard for Venus. Still, is Serena really unbeatable ? She hadn't easy games vs Loit, Clijters and her sister.

The Serena Slam!! Woohoo! You bet I'm overjoyed, Elfie. :D

I think this was the most disappointed Venus has been after losing to Serena. She is usually pretty happy for her but she didn't smile as much this time. I guess losing all the time to little sis will do that.

Serena is not unbeatable. I doubt she believes that either. I really don't think she will do as well at Roland Garros as she did last year. Clay is still her weakest surface by far and a Henin or Mauresmo can definitely beat her.
