Btw, would love to hear more about him if you or Theon would have time - as I understand it, he is widely regarded as Poland's best ever player (alongside Boniek and Deyna), who sadly missed out on their 1974 World Cup run, losing on some media and fans attention. His story looks a lot like Streltsov's

Aye it was between him and Suker for me. Lubanski is a complete attacker from what I've seen although it's a bit what if around him - injuries pretty much ruined him at the age of 26.
Opted for Suker as he has that extra oomph around him and some of his big games performances I've witnessed live really made me choose him.
Lubanski however in turn 6 is a great pick.

When I watched him front of the goal, each time, I was thinking, kick from the inside of the left foot, ... from the outside of the right foot ... a header, now! ... he had already done it ... scoring each time, exactly by the only possible way, and in just a split second. In the last 30 years, he has been the only striker that I've seen like that in France

I was seriously considering dropping Sarosi back to SS/AM and picking him. He must have been a hell of a finisher.
Yeah, he is right up there as Poland's greatest ever player along with Deyna, Boniek and Lato. He seems to be regarded in even higher esteem by the Poles and won the UEFA Golden Player Award for Poland as their standout from the last 50 years. Precocious talent having made his goalscoring debut for the national team at just 16 and being very productive over the next 10 years or so until his injury. Used to tear it up in Europe a lot for Gornik Zabrze, scoring against United in 1968 (pushing them dangerously close to an exit on their way to the big one), Rangers in 1969 and is one of the all-time top scorers in the Cup Winners Cup (and has the best ratio amongst all the top players including the likes of Gerd Muller and Hristo Stoichkov). Featured in a World XI in 1971 for Yashin's farewell game. No wonder the rise and fall of Gornik coincides entirely with Lubanski's career.
A complete centre-forward from what I can tell, very quick, excellent finisher - be it in the box off either foot, in the air, or from range - adept at working the front line, pressing from the front (see him robbing Bobby Moore below), dovetailing with other creative players. Certainly a case of 'what if' for the national team had he not done his cruciate against England in 1973, given how good Poland were around then and, in retrospect, that was a lucky break for West Germany and Holland. Still netted 48 goals in 75 internationals by the age of just 26, winning the Olympics in 1972 as well.

Bearing in mind that he was 21 in 1938, and lost his career during the war (forced to play for the Germans during WW2) it is an astonishing statistic and a depressing one when you realise what this guy could have been had the political situation been very different. His story is just as if not more devastating than Sindelar especially when you consider how unknown he remains.
And what a footballer he was -- lightning-fast over the first yards, two-footed, a gifted dribbler and lethal in front of goal. Fritz Walter, the captain of West Germany's 1954 World Cup-winning team, once said that Wilimowski was the only striker who would score more goals than he had opportunities. It was no hyperbole. Ezi was a great technician with superb control of the ball and bags of tricks, he was also very skilful and liked to beat his rivals with quick sudden turns and deceptions. He was very agile with good pace and scoring instinct but knew to exaggerate with his dribblings (Feints).

In a match against Brazil played in Strasbourg, France during the 1938 FIFA World Cup, "Ezi" put on a stunning display by becoming the first player ever to score four goals in a single World Cup match against a side with Leonidas Da Silva (who scored a hat-trick) and a defence marshalled by Domingos Da Guia. His irrepressible rampant dribbling attacks on the opposition net drew a penalty as he was rugby tackled to the ground by Da Guia earning a penalty (see Gif below), which led to Poland's fifth goal scored from the spot by German-born XXXXXXXX, from Poznań. Despite Ezi's efforts, including some outside of the foot dink over the keeper (see gif 2 below) however, it was not enough - Poland lost the match 5-6 and was eliminated from the tournament. Willimowski's record was later equalled by other players, but was bettered only 56 years later, when XXXXXXX scored five goals against XXXXXX during the XXXX FIFA World Cup. And as of 2014 it still remains the only World Cup match when a player from the losing side scored four goals.

Legend has it he celebrated his achievement, a record that stood for 56 years, by getting so drunk in a bar that he signed three professional contracts on the spot. (It could be true. He was always very partial to liquor.) It is said that Brazilian officials wanted to acquire his services and that Willimowski had signed a preliminary contract, but it did not work out. Another legend says that when his teammates dragged him out of the place, tearing up the contracts, he never forgave them.
6. Hat-Trick v Sarosi's Hungary
Willimowski put on another memorable display on 27 August 1939 in Warsaw in an international friendly against what was then one of the best teams in the world - Hungary, the 1938 World Cup runner-up. After 33 minutes of play the Hungarians were ahead 2:0. Willimowski scored three goals and again drew a penalty through his attacking play which was converted by teammate XXXXXXXX, giving Poland a 4:2 win. The match was the last game played before the start of World War II just four days later.
7. Joining the Nazi's..
15 months after the Brazil game, Germany invaded Poland. Wilimowski took up German citizenship, though not primarily because of his family background. "At the time, allegiance to Germany was an important survival strategy in the border area".
After the division of Poland, Willimowski as Volksdeutscher re-took German citizenship, like the majority of the inhabitants of the Eastern part of Upper Silesia, among them all the players of the Polish national team coming from this region. It allowed them to continue their football careers as Poles were not permitted to participate in sports under the Nazi occupation. In the early days of the war Willimowski had to hide from the Nazis because of the enmity of a local kreisleiter (ward leader) of the NSDAP namedXXXXXXX who held against Willimowski the 1933 transfer from the ethnically-German club 1. FC Kattowitz to the Polish Ruch Chorzów.[5] Allegedly, XXXXX threatened that Willimowski would have to wear the letter "P" (for Pole) on his clothes. This never happened, as Willimowski was too good a player and well appreciated by other German football officials. However, his mother Paulina, was placed in Auschwitz Concentration Camp, which she survived. Wilimowski's mother was incarcerated because she got engaged in an intimate relationship with a Russian Jew, which was regarded as Rassenschande in Nazi Germany. Ernst, who in later stages of the war became friends with legendary pilot Hermann Graf, managed to save her, with Graf's help.
8. Career during the War
In June 1941, Wilimowski first ran out for his new national team. Against Romania, he found the target twice, thus becoming the only man who scored both for and against Germany. He followed that performance with three goals against Finland in Helsinki on 5 October 1941 as the Germans scored an easy 6-0 win. Willimowski's most memorable performance for the German national side came on 18 October 1942 in Bern, Switzerland as the Germans defeated a well-respected Swiss national team by a score of 5-3. "Ezi" scored four of five goals with the other being netted by Fritz Walter.
Wilimowski was capped a total of eight times for Germany, scoring 13 goals (1.63 per match). His last appearance for Germany was in a 5-2 victory over Slovakia in Bratislava on 22 November 1942. After this match Germany no longer played international friendlies because of the war.
Post War Legacy...
Ernst Willimowski was a historic link between the Polish and the Germans, and the perfect symbol of the mindless destruction war can wreak on the common man who just wishes to go about his business. His dream was to become a professional footballer, but the truth is he underestimated his ability as he could have been one of the biggest names ever in the history of football had it not been for the war. Many players talk about how the war prevented many a career from reaching its peak but none suffered quite as much as Willimowski.
In the eyes of many Poles, he became a traitor. After the war, only a few people in Poland wanted to hear the reasons why he had worn the shirt with the Swastika. Under communist rule, he was blacklisted and his name erased from the record books.
A similar fate befell him in post war West Germany. He was too old to be seriously considered for the 1954 World Cup squad, and so Wilimowski did not become a "Hero of Berne", just an unwelcome reminder of a recent past many people wanted to forget quickly. To this day, nobody has scored more goals in a season of the German cup competition than Wilimowski (he netted 14 goals in 1942, when he won the trophy with 1860 Munich) and some books list him as having scored more than 1,000 goals during his career, a feat barely a handful of footballers can match. Yet few German fans have ever heard his name. He remains the only player to have both a goal against Germany (on September 9, 1934 at 2:5 in Warsaw) as well as scoring Germany (13 in 8 games).

Willimowski put on another memorable display on 27 August 1939 in Warsaw in an international friendly against what was then one of the best teams in the world - Hungary, the 1938 World Cup runner-up. After 33 minutes of play the Hungarians were ahead 2:0. Willimowski scored three goals and again drew a penalty through his attacking play which was converted by teammate XXXXXXXX, giving Poland a 4:2 win. The match was the last game played before the start of World War II just four days later.
7. Joining the Nazi's..
15 months after the Brazil game, Germany invaded Poland. Wilimowski took up German citizenship, though not primarily because of his family background. "At the time, allegiance to Germany was an important survival strategy in the border area".
After the division of Poland, Willimowski as Volksdeutscher re-took German citizenship, like the majority of the inhabitants of the Eastern part of Upper Silesia, among them all the players of the Polish national team coming from this region. It allowed them to continue their football careers as Poles were not permitted to participate in sports under the Nazi occupation. In the early days of the war Willimowski had to hide from the Nazis because of the enmity of a local kreisleiter (ward leader) of the NSDAP namedXXXXXXX who held against Willimowski the 1933 transfer from the ethnically-German club 1. FC Kattowitz to the Polish Ruch Chorzów.[5] Allegedly, XXXXX threatened that Willimowski would have to wear the letter "P" (for Pole) on his clothes. This never happened, as Willimowski was too good a player and well appreciated by other German football officials. However, his mother Paulina, was placed in Auschwitz Concentration Camp, which she survived. Wilimowski's mother was incarcerated because she got engaged in an intimate relationship with a Russian Jew, which was regarded as Rassenschande in Nazi Germany. Ernst, who in later stages of the war became friends with legendary pilot Hermann Graf, managed to save her, with Graf's help.
8. Career during the War
In June 1941, Wilimowski first ran out for his new national team. Against Romania, he found the target twice, thus becoming the only man who scored both for and against Germany. He followed that performance with three goals against Finland in Helsinki on 5 October 1941 as the Germans scored an easy 6-0 win. Willimowski's most memorable performance for the German national side came on 18 October 1942 in Bern, Switzerland as the Germans defeated a well-respected Swiss national team by a score of 5-3. "Ezi" scored four of five goals with the other being netted by Fritz Walter.
Wilimowski was capped a total of eight times for Germany, scoring 13 goals (1.63 per match). His last appearance for Germany was in a 5-2 victory over Slovakia in Bratislava on 22 November 1942. After this match Germany no longer played international friendlies because of the war.
Post War Legacy...
Ernst Willimowski was a historic link between the Polish and the Germans, and the perfect symbol of the mindless destruction war can wreak on the common man who just wishes to go about his business. His dream was to become a professional footballer, but the truth is he underestimated his ability as he could have been one of the biggest names ever in the history of football had it not been for the war. Many players talk about how the war prevented many a career from reaching its peak but none suffered quite as much as Willimowski.
In the eyes of many Poles, he became a traitor. After the war, only a few people in Poland wanted to hear the reasons why he had worn the shirt with the Swastika. Under communist rule, he was blacklisted and his name erased from the record books.
A similar fate befell him in post war West Germany. He was too old to be seriously considered for the 1954 World Cup squad, and so Wilimowski did not become a "Hero of Berne", just an unwelcome reminder of a recent past many people wanted to forget quickly. To this day, nobody has scored more goals in a season of the German cup competition than Wilimowski (he netted 14 goals in 1942, when he won the trophy with 1860 Munich) and some books list him as having scored more than 1,000 goals during his career, a feat barely a handful of footballers can match. Yet few German fans have ever heard his name. He remains the only player to have both a goal against Germany (on September 9, 1934 at 2:5 in Warsaw) as well as scoring Germany (13 in 8 games).

Not quite sure how that happened and maybe the pool of defenders in that tournament wasn't so great or something (well David Luiz did make the TOTT in 2014 after all
