I think the difficulty with Passarella is that he's sort of an attacking stopper and there's more excellent attacking left-back than more defensive ones. Also since he's more of an attacking stopper you don't want to play him as the sweeper in a back 5, that said he could work very well in the Maguire role from the 2018 World Cup.
I think though I'd go with a back 4 with
Maldini-Passarella-Nesta-Zanetti
With Nesta as a sort of defensive sweeper role.
I don't think that much else matters except to have the width on the left not provided by Maldini and to be a reasonably direct side. So maybe -
----------------------MVB-------------
-------Best-----------------------Finney
------------Charlton----L.Suarez-----
--------------------Rikjaard-----------------
Maldini-Passarella-Nesta-Zanetti
---------------------Big Pete------------------
Yup my thoughts exactly.
You need a defensive LB who can tuck in - Maldini should be perfect. A rugged stopper, maybe with a bit of pace in it, a balanced RB, a sweeper keeper of sorts so he can additionally go into the zone left by Passarella on counter and a DM who can drop back - either Rijkaard or Desailly should do fine.
As for midfield and attack I think it should be similar with a back four with Sammer in it. You would need midfielders who can play a quick one two's and move the ball quickly and be good in transition as you mentioned.
More of orthodox wingers so they can both put the ball in the box and maximize his aerial threat and a CF who can also engage defenders and leave space for him to attack the box from deep.
Luisito and Finney are actually very good shouts.
