Apologies if similar threads have been done previously but with the good feeling of only being 2 pts off top after 10 games (roughly a quarter of season), I wanted to see how we've been doing since SAF over each quarter of a season. Now of course the numbers depend on who you're playing during those set of games and its different each season but it can give a general idea of how things have gone. And at least it provides a comparison from previous seasons to see what we're capable of (good and bad).

  • This is our 3rd best start to a season points wise and our joint best start in terms of how many points off top (tied with 2015/2016)
  • We generally do better in our second set of 10 games than the first 10
  • ...except for in the previously mentioned 15/16 season ! It's crucial we don't let this happen again
  • Our two worst starts points wise (13pts each in 14/15 and 19/20) have yielded two of our three top 4 finishes !
  • Our final league position has mostly been the same as our position after match 20 (last season was an important jump from 5th to 3rd)
  • In terms of gaining ground on the leaders over a set of 10 games, we've managed do it once for each set - 14/15 (11-20), 18/19 (21-30), 19/20 (31-38)
As has been noted by others, this season is giving off the 15/16 Leicester season vibes with no clear runaway team and also the low points total of league leaders (at 21pts, it's the lowest of all seasons).

Let's hope our next 10+10 games are not as bad as that season (at a combined 13+17=30pts, it's our worst run...and last season was only slightly better at 18+15=33pts).

Any thoughts or observations?

Apologies OP, not to steal your thunder, credit all to OP.

Losing to Comeback Winning!
Good thread OP

 Very interesting indeed.

A) Personal observations:
1. Ole's seasons are always up-and-down, every quarter of each seasons (the high number of reds and blues proved that).

2. Starking similarity with LVG's seasons at the start, but LVG's always improve upwards towards the end of the season and have the knack to get the closest to league leaders, while Ole's tend to have extreme spikes up and spikes down.

3. Mou's seasons are generally more balance and consistent from the start to the end. Stable is the word.

4. We have to also consider how weak the league was during LVG's and stronger it is during Mou's. This season is also weak, so advantageous for Ole.

B) Critical conclusion?
So if the stats are right, we will have another bumper ride with Ole this season (if not already) while Spurs will maintain in stable form.

1. First Quarter
Ole's 1st full season is similar with LVG's 1st season. Trash.
Ole's 2nd full season is also very similar with LVG's 2nd season. Quite good.

Mou's 3rd final season is similar to Moyes season.
Mou's seasons starts are generally stable, while both Ole's and LVG's are down-then-up.

2. Second quarter
Moyes is consistent.
Mou remains consistent.

LVG showed a contrast to his 1st quarter, twice in two different seasons. Consistent in this sense.
Ole's showed slight improvements.

3. Third quarter
Moyes is very consistent... like a good upper midtable team.
Mou remain generally consistent, slight up or down, but still stable.
LVG's first is stable, while he improved a lot for his 2nd season.

As for Ole's...
Firstly the same squad Ole inherited attained similar pts won and PPG as they did the previous season.
Some credits to Ole for improving that too I guess.

And then Ole's first full season....
:lol:Oh my gahd, last season is so shiitttt!!!!
Our form actually gets freaking worse?
Thank god Bruno saved our season, and thank god that season is shit with other teams too in transition weak states.

4. Fourth/Last quarter
Moyes consistently shit, turning us into a genuine best midtable team.
LVG had another contrast to previous quarter - either gets extremely worse or slightly improve, never consistent.
Mou's forms interestingly slightly gets worse at the end, most likely after playing hard his players, to the limit of their fitness.

As for Ole..
His first season gets worse. Excuses? injuries and fitness.
His second season (first full season)? Gets a lot better, after the break where both Pogba and Rashford returned. Are there any excuses? Oh yes, fitness.
Excuses for the third season (second full season) poor start? Same - fitness, injuries and additionally, no pre-season preparations.

Injuries problems are only exclusive to Ole's seasons... it didn't happened ever at all during the previous 3 managers seasons

Moyes was extremely consistent over the course of that season, unfortunately consistently substandard. He simply did not have the tactical nous or motivational ability to push his team to a title winning ppg at any point of the season.
A title winning team in a typical season gets around 2.3 or so PPG, fluctuating between 2 and 2.5 from quarter to quarter.
Ole has shown he can achieve this ppg over a quarter; in a topsy turvy season like this one, he may be able to do the unimaginable.
He will obviously have to limit the dips in form, but in this pandemic situation, the dips may not be so costly as every other team will likely hit rough patches.
Looking ahead at the next quarter, 23 to 28 points is achievable. Maguire is coming right, Cavani is up and running, Pogba is is rightly on the fringes. Hopefully he can exploit this upswing to the max.

The start of this season is similar to LVG in 15/16. Wide open league, not far off the top. Let's hope the rest of this month is not as bad December '15. Leipzig away = Wolfsburg away :nervous: .

I was surprised when posting this by the numbers of our 3rd quarter last season (roughly starting from Jan) since we signed Bruno at the time. But upon closer inspection, it turns out our first 4 games in Jan, which were prior to Bruno signing, we managed 1 win and 3 losses. So 3pts from 12. Even one win more, and possibly a draw on top of that as well, would have made the numbers look much better.

Pretty much. If we carry on with our current PPG (which is not that great to begin with), it won't be enough to win the title obviously but we could end up being not too far off.

The LVG season would have seen us only 5 pts shy of Leicester if we maintained the start...but that December was brutal. Let's hope history doesn't repeat itself.\

Bruno - please stay fit !

For this season, we gotta avoid losing 3 games in another 10-15 games to be in the mix.
