I don't know. Giving him a coaching role is all well and good and makes the club look good but what if he is not a good coach? I don't know what it takes to coach 9 year olds but he could stunt the growth of these kids just for the club to say they didn't abandon him.

Brighton look like a really well-run club, I assume that they feel he's a good fit for the role. If it was just about looking after him, I reckon they'd give him a scouting role instead of entrusting young kids to him. I remember City did the same with Sinan Bytiqi years ago.
