What in your opinion is the better metric to assess a defensive proficiency over the course of a season?

Obviously for the most part, the two stats should tell a similar story. But which one do you personally value more and why?

The clear and obvious answer is goals conceded is more valuable.

No matter how well trained, how talented or how prepared a team is the chance of conceding will always remain.

Player fitness and diet, concentration and mental levels, the weather, humidity, wind direction, ball conditions and the pitch will also increase odecrease the odds of conceding.

Therefore all teams strive to reduce those odds and by association, increase their odds of winning. A team will not plan for clean sheets, it’s simply impossible.

The record in England for goals conceded is 15 in 38. Held by Chelsea. This is 0.4 goals a game, almost 1 goal every 3 games. In that season, they lost just once and for a long time had the record points in a season. They also had most away wins in a season (15), most clean sheets kept in a season (25), fewest goals conceded away in a season (9), most wins in a season (29).

Those achievements and records came because of their ability to reduce the odds of conceding and as a consequence the clean sheets and results followed.
