I just did a search... we don't have a comic megathread?

Anyway, I'm not into American comics, as they tend to go spinoff with multiple generations of arcs and reincarnation. I prefer anime as you can be sure, they'll put an end to it somehow, somewhere.

But regardless, I think it's time for me to dip into the US comics, can anyone recommend me a few arc of comics that's good and excellent by their own rights? Preferably something serious and dark (as I prefer my comic to be as close as possible to the reality)

I'm tempted to give Xmen, and Marvel a go... but the sheer of their volumes puts me off, and I simply don't know which arc to follow anymore, ditto with Superman, Batman, Transformer, etc.

I could be wrong, any western comic enthusiasts can enlighten me?

I can't remember why I joined this war.
The Walking Dead is among the best american comic series imo.

If you are more into superhero comics have a look at Invincible. It starts of a bit silly somehow but gets pretty brutal later on, if splatter puts you off better don't read it though.

Batman comics are of course pretty cool as well, at least most of them and the reboot is a pretty good way to start with him again I would say.

If you are into Zombie stuff and Gore you also might have a look at all the different Crossed series, most of them are really good and are more like short stories then a continues series. There is also a continues Crossed online comic at crossedcomic.com.

I'll search my brain if I can remember some more worthwhile american comics and get back at you.

Thank you, however, looking back from the future, i'd rather something complete (and cough.. perhaps.. cough... available disgustingly off the net so i can report them pirates to the proper authority)

I prefer something heavy and probably non Batman / Superman stuff (as they're too famous and much have been shed to light about them).

Any proper thing like "Berserk, Gantz, Samurai X" or whatever the american equivalent of such things?

Unfortunately I have never read those considering that I'm not big into Mangas.

But I remember having watched an anime called Berserk which was somehow a medival/fantasy setting?

I have no clue if there is much around in regards of american comics to that style. All fantasy stuff I ever came across was pretty stupid imo.

Maybe Spawn is a something for you? He had his own movie but he is far less known then any of the big super heroes out there.

You should try those Japs Manga,

I know it's kinda daunting at first with their big eyes and propensity for porn themed material (even in a boys comic, or specially in boys comic), but their story arcs is really heavy and serious, comparable to the grittiest American comic.

I don't really have a problem with Manga but I somehow never got started with reading any. My main exposure to Japanese manga or animes goes as far as watching a few popular anime's like Akira, Afro Samurai, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell and one of the Berserk Arcs I don't quite remember. But that's as far as my anime/manga knowledge goes.

If I can find the time I'll have a look at those Manags you mentioned.

If you like some occult and magic, Hellblazer will be my recommendation. It's witty and John Constantine probably has the best one liners in comics.
Alan Moore stuff is great, like League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. The movie adaptations sucks though

Deadpool is my favourite of the 'superhero' lot, despite not really being a superhero. He's just a dick. The most recent Marvel Now! run is arguably the best Deadpool run ever, so is a good place to start if anyone is interested in getting into Deadpool. It's written by Brian Posehn, who is a pretty good comedian, so there's lotsa wisecrackin'. But like the OP says, there's so many reboots and spinoffs, it's so easy to get bogged down trying to read them all. And that's just one character.

I like some Batman stuff too (The Long Halloween, Year One, The Killing Joke especially) but outside of that, I don't really care for the usual Marvel/DC heroes and villains type stuff.

Chew and DMZ are my favourite series' of recent times.

For ongoing I would recommend Valiant Comics.
Marvel is a mess at the moment. Starts and restarts of titles every year.
Batman has been bullshit for 20 years. Too many spin-offs. Nearly everyone in Gotham is a bat-something now.
If you want a better Bat title try X by Dark Horse
DCs reboot was okay for a while and then turned to shit.

Mark Millar stuff is pretty good for limited series. Jupiter's Legacy, Secret Service, Kick Ass, etc
Think Tank is great.
Miracleman reprints.

Glad this thread has cropped up, our shop in town has just reopened and I'm not sure where to start after being out of this sort of game for years. I'll be keeping an eye on this.

I used to manage a comic shop in Walsall. We told the local papers that I had changed my name to Bat man by deed poll and it went national. I was on TV and radio and everything. It was all a lie. I did have Batman as a nickname because of an T-shirt I used to wear in the early eighties.
Shame Batman went shit.

I struggled to get stuff once I moved to Japan but now just use CBR files.
I think Magnus was restarted by Dark Horse. The also did Solar. Problem with these titles is they need to sell loads because they have to pay a lot for the rights. That is why Valiant didn't pick them up again.

I was in the same boat as you when I got into Deadpool. There's just so much from so many different writers and so many different runs. I didn't know where to start.

I don't really bother with actual comics. I just buy them when they are released as trade paperbacks, which are usually 6 issues. Individual issues are a bit tougher to track down unless you're keeping up to date with a current run.

The latest run of Marvel Now! Deadpool is very strong. I'd say it's the best Deadpool has been.

That's the first 3 trades, and the 4th is due out next month. You can pick them up for about a fiver each 2nd hand on Amazon. This is probably the best place to start, as it's not been going too long, and is still on-going. Volume 1 starts off very light to get you into it. It's all jokes and gore. It develops well as it goes on though.

A good week for me. A new Valiant title started, and a pretty strong group of Marvel titles released. That's me entertained for the night.

Can't beat Alan Moore's work - Watchmen, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (Vol 1 and 2), V for Vendetta, From Hell are all definite reads. Just dont judge them on their movie adaptations.

Check his Miracleman, too.
I met him once. My mate had a shop in Affleck's Palace selling Japanese films and stuff and he came in with these two women. The were the miserabalist bunch of feckers I've ever seen in my life.

I just discovered you can buy comics on the iPad, this could get dangerous.

I'd rather read the actual comic, but I might pick up the digital first volume of Deadpool and start reading as I'm working away.

Own a fair few Batman comics both downloads and physical copies - love the character, some of the story arcs, both classic and more modern day are phenomenally entertaining. Reading Batman comics is kind of my chill-out method.

What are these lot like? Well not Chew, Saga and TWD, I read them already already, Saga and Chew are terrific. Also Locke and Key, another good series.
East of West is quite good. A bit strange but I like strange.

Image in general has quite a good selection of comics imo a bit less mainstream than Marvel and DC but still fairly high quality comics.

Just ordered my first ever comic (Deadpool kills the Marvel universe). I thought I'd start as a stand-alone one to see if I enjoy reading comics, then will move on to the ones you listed. Cheers!

Aye it's a good one, that. Cullen Bunn is a good Deadpool writer. He tends to do the more gorey stuff, so the violence is pretty silly, which I like.

It was technically part of a trilogy, but the stories are very much separate from each other, so the other two aren't really essential. If you dig Deadpool Kills The Marvel Universe, then you could complete the trilogy with Deadpool Kills Deadpool and Deadpool Killustrated. All 3 are very different, but pretty good.

This is how I got started with Deadpool. I got absorbed by one run, learned about other offshoots and reboots and just got suckered in.

I just read through Deadpool Volume 1. Secret Invasion I think it's called, it's 1-5 of the comics or something. I like this Deadpool fella, he seems a right nutter!

Any suggestion for comics with a light erotica involved?

The manga was littered with that (and by now means I was looking for porns or stuffs like that), it's just that somehow it's a form of entertainment by itself when you know you can read abit of thought inducing erotica even in an action / superhero themed comics.

Daniel Way's Deadpool is certainly the craziest. Way decided he was going to make Deadpool suffer from split personality and voices in his head. The Marvel fanboys seem to widely criticise that approach, but I thought it was pretty fun. Way's stories are pure silliness.

I thought it was cool, although sometimes I think it's a benefit coming in knowing nothing about the previous characters as you have a bit more of an open mind about it all.

Also picked up the definitive Avengers collection or something along those lines today, had £14 left on a Waterstones voucher so though it's as good a place as any to start.

Just seen the list of this week's releases. Not so many for me. Maybe 10 that I read.
