can you explane a rule for me.
I have started getting more interested in Hockey, after i went to a Hockey game with a few work mates.(german hockey)
when they have a fight they are sent of and you dont see them again, They get banned for a couple of games.
How ever...in America it looks different.
When they fight...It goes like this.
First they give each other a stare...then they shake their gloves of...and start punching shit out of each other...and every one looks on.including the ref.
This lasts about 3
seconds...one of them drops the other and the fight is over. They both get sin binned for 10 mins and are allowed to play on normal afterwards.
what are the rules in this case?

I think it's what they would term part of the "on-Ice product" - an essential ingredient of the game which spectators love to see!

Kinda. What I mean is I think the yanks look at their sport more as a product to be sold in a market place, the spectators of course being the customers. The fights I would hazard a guess are one of the product attributes that the customers are attracted to and hence it shouldn't be threatened by overly tough penalties. I may be wrong but I should imagine that's their way of thinking on this.

German Ice Hockey bores me to tears. Have you noticed that the rink is much bigger which makes the game seem like it's being played in slow motion compared to the NHL games? There's a yank game on premiere tonight at 7pm whihc will be worth watching.

The yanks are entertained by the fights, consequently they have goons in every team whose only task is to fight. Parly to protect the star players, othervise it would be easy to beat the shite out of the talented ones but now they get a balance in that as they have goons on both sides.

This went OTT a few years ago and now they have changed the line and the refs look after the star players so that they get more room. This is why they play an enomormous amount of power player this year in particular in the NHL. The right direction IMO.

I watched Iserlohn play...they are quite good, i have never been to a game before so i cant realy make any judgements. And it was quite entertaining...much better than watchin it on tv.
However...watching Yank Hockey is much more entertaining on tv.
Im out tonight so im going to miss it.
do you watch it on premiere world Dans?

amateur fans...

Most yanks were extremely impressed by the big rink during the olympics last year as it gave the extra space to the stars. Small rinks is for goons who can't skate. This is one of the reasons they import so many europeans these days, the youth in the states are 130 kg 2 meter tall and can't handle the puck and are slow as feck. they are merely there to tackle and they even need to make the rink smaller for them to be able to hit someone.

so are fight scenes in a way fixed , To make the game more entertaining. eg They must have at least one fight a game?

Hard to say, but they do seem fixed at times as it is often two to goons who just happen to pick eachother out. But during the end of the season when you need the star players in the play-offs, good protection is necessary.

Pf - Premiere Sport 2 at 7pm - they show on average 2 games a week at extremely unsociable hours but they repeat the games the following day. Sometimes there's an early game and they'll show it at the weekend like tonight.

Ahmed - interesting what you say about the players preferring the larger rink, but it really seems too big and too slow on those rinks - I like the smaller rink and surely it isn't for those who can't skate as the technical ability needed to make the tight turns in the more confined space would suggest a better skater?

In the US, there is a ten minute fighting major penalty, which is usually given in conjunction with two minute minor penalties like slahing or roughing that started the fight. At the end of the penalty time, the players can return to the ice. If things get really out of hand, the refs can award a game misconduct and the player is gone from the game and I think must sit out the next game.

When a fight starts, the players do not interfere because that is an automatic 'third man in' penalty and is a game misconduct. Leaving the bench to join a fight is also a game misconduct. The refs let the fight go until one player goes down or it looks like somebody is getting severely hurt. Then they break it up.

Fights start for a variety of reasons. Sometimes its for intimidation. It's a rough game and a dirty hit can start a fight. Other times it may be the result of rough play against another team's star player. Teams generally have one or two tough fighters, unoffiocially called "enforcers" to protect the star or less physical players. Nobody tells them to fight, but they realize that they are there to make that sort of contribution.

Occassionally the league cracks down on violence through increased enforcement and stricted penalties. But generally the NHL thinks that fights are normal in a rough sport and gives the players a way to police the games themselves.

I think the NHL likes the smaller rinks because it lets the put in more seats. Because of the smaller rinks, the play is more physical and speed is less of an advantage. It's not so much that US/Canadian skaters aren't fast, it's just that in addition to speed you also have to be tough enough to survive the physical nature of the game and dig the puck out in the corners.

There are less injuries in fighting than in the game itself. If fighting was banned, you would see more injuries from slashing with the stick and other things.Fighting actually stops injuries if you think about it.

You are very right here. For the most part, the North American players are power players, who like to forecheck a lot. The U.S.'s power forwards, i.e. a Deadmarsh, Tkachuk, LeClair are very much like this, and Guerin and Roenick are to a lesser extent. The Europeans rely much more on a flowing attacking game with much more puckhandling--especially the Czechs and the Russians, although to a lesser extent the Scandanavians. On the big ice, the flowing game is much more useful IMO, although the U.S. did play well at the last Olympics. As for myself, I love a nice combo of both--hence the existence of Canada ;)

could somebody tell me what the actual meaning is of the word "power play"?

Is it some sought of tactical play? or is it the word for attack, or something completly different.

A power play comes about when one team has a player sent to the side for a two minute penalty and the result is a 5 vs 4 situation on the ice.

A better explanation is that as a result of penalties one team has a man advantage - it can be 5 vs 3 or 4 vs 3 too.

There's a game on Premiere tonight at 11pm pf.

During the spectator debut season regular season games have to be watched though. But you're right, once the playoffs come around it really hots up - same with NBA.

Does this explain why European ice hockey teams beat Canada and the US so badly in the last Olympics? <img src="graemlins/smirk.gif" border="0" alt="[Smirk]" /> ;)
