The figures puzzled me so I tracked down the sponsoring website and discovered that those speeds were apparantly clocked by SkySports/OptaStats during games.

http://www.skysports.com/whoisthefastest/index.html
and click on "head to head"

So unless they run fast with/without the ball during a match then they don't make the list - which will rule out a lot of players including most defenders. And also gives a clue as to why a player might run faster with the ball than without. Because the circumstances were right? Because the way the timings were taken meant they'd already hit top speed as they picked up the ball?

Maybe Andy Gray'll explain how they do the measurements sometime. Geeks like me need to know.

Interesting. I didn't know that.

It sheds new light on the whole "SWP phenomenon", that's for sure. If a player runs quicker on the ball then he does without, does it mean that they're not putting the effort in and really busting a gut when they're tracking back or making runs into space and they only really try when they've got the ball?

For me it has to be Silvestre or Richards who are the fastest bar none in the Premieriship
Judging by the way Ronaldo never once got past Richards, you've have to say they're at least as quick as each other. Given Ronaldo was already up to some speed and Richards facing the wrong way only had a standing start at times, I'd bet he's the quicker of the two

At these kind of Ronaldo/Richards speeds I doubt it's raw pace that matters. Generally defenders are on a direct track to intersept the ball/man and getting in the way is usually enough. Whereas the attacker's looking for enough room to actually shoot or pass and unless it's a slow defender they're up against they'll be looking to suddenly change direction or speed - a different kind of move.

Tevez for example can look slow when running, but then will do a turn or change of direction that makes him look really quick. Sprinting speed's only a real factor where there's a big discrepancy.

yes Ireckon this is the case

it means off the ball they are never at full pelt and on the ball they are explosive with it

not necessarily a bad thing

This story - finding the league's fastest player based on clocking a maximum speed - was done last season as well. Though last season they didn't do the with ball / without ball comparison. Last season's fastest player was supposedly Kalou.

There are many flaws with the process. For one, the results could only be reliable under controlled conditions. For example, players will be faster on a firm dry pitch than they are on a heavy waterlogged pitch. These results will have been collected on different pitches and matchdays, which would have advantaged some players and disadvantaged others depending on the conditions.

WHAT ABOUT ROONEY?! HE tears it down the pitch!
Our own silvestre as well.

Gavin and Justin Hoyte?! I went to school with them, Gavin used to run an easy sub 11 secs in Yr 7 & 8!!!! Fastest fella we've ever had at our school, and we've had Justin who was rapid, and even Sally Gunnel earlier.

The measurements were taken in matches this season and they're only including results where they've got with and without the ball figures. So it's the players who run (fast!) with the ball in matches - therefore more likely to be wingers.

Gavin is clocked as the fastest at Arsenal (over 5yds & 15 I think).

I doubt it was easy if it was sub 11

Too bad Bellion is no longer playing in England. He'd probably clock under 10 secs with the ball.

Those speeds aren't particularly fast - are they really maximum speeds? Or the method of measuring them is dodgy.

The likes of Asafa Powell, Tyson Gay, Maurice Greene, Carl Lewis and Ben Johnson have broken 27mph. Obviously that's on a track with spikes, but you'd still expect the speeds to be a bit closer - for instance Heike Drechsler has a 100m PB of 10.86 but has still reached over 24mph.

Word is that Faubert can shift a bit...once he is fully fit I guess we'll see just how quick he is.
