Florentino Luís

Is he a Kante type player then?
He has more in the locker potentially. His passing is good and will improve further. His ground coverage is is also very good and he's fantastic at winning the ball back for his team with excellent tackling ability.

He is like Ndidi.
Ndidi is a destroyer that doesn't have the ability to dictate the tempo of the game from deeper.

Florentino has all the attributes to be a destroyer but has the composure and passing ability to dictate the tempo from a deeper which makes him a different proposition in the comparison with Ndidi.

It remains to be seen how Florentino fares in a tougher league and the step up will be a challenge for him. But he's a very rounded player that can breakup play, cover ground quickly and distribute the ball to a good level. His ability on the ball sets him apart potentially.

Maybe you have seen more of him but he’s very conservative on the ball to me. He’s no expansive passer at all, and his distribution is more Makalele like than some sort of Michael Carrick.

His strength is in his energy and tackling, and the defensive aide of his game is very developed already. He’s certainly like an Ndidi or Mascherano from what I’ve seen. If anything, it his ability with the ball that needs to be developed a bit - although not necessarily if we had any plan to pair him with a double 8 of Pogba and Fernandes. For that role - I’d say he’s the exact sort of player we need.

I’m not saying anything is wrong with his passing - it is tidy, and statistically, he completes most of them. I just haven’t seen him to be playing anything penetrative, and in our team, I don’t think he’d really need to. He is extremely disciplined. Nigel De Jong at City could be another example, I thought he was a fantastic defensive midfielder there.

Good post mate and I do agree with alot of what you're saying and I also liked De Jong at City.

I watched Florentino quite extensively this season before he suffered a bad injury and was out for a lengthy spell of time. And I also watched a number of games he played in youth tournaments which culminated him playing a key role in Portugal winning the Under 17 and under 19 European championships. And from what I saw he had very good ability to pass between the lines and turned defense into attack very quickly due to his ability to pick a pass from central areas. His ability to win the ball and his tackling was outstanding though and it made a real impact in midfield.

I carried on following him at SLB and watched a number of games where I was very impressed with his all round skillset for a DM and made long winded posts describing his attributes and potential. He without a doubt has very good passing ability from a deeper role but that particular attribute gets overshadowed with his awesome defensive work where he cuts passing lanes superbly well, covers ground excellently and tackles like AWB hence being called the octopus.

I think he has the potential to be among the very best DMs in the game due to his all round ability and I for one would be extremely happy if we moved for him.

Yet another Benfica media product. Renato Sanches was a better talent.

Florentino doesn't even play for them and they're crap this year, spends half the games on the bench and the other half in the stands. He's better than Gedson Fernandes though.

doesn't look all that from the clips I saw

doubt we're in for him anyway

He's not individually brilliant on the ball, at least. We are apparently looking for a specialist defensive midfielder, which makes sense since Matic is getting on and all of our other other midfielders are more suited to box to box or attacking roles.

Maybe we intend to play a 4-3-3 more regularly, or maybe its press bollocks as usual

If there's truth to this im glad to see we are at least looking for a DM type, someone of that profile is a more pressing need than another Attack minded midfielder.

Yeah maybe not him but we definitely need to bring in this type of midfielder

Camavinga looks better and could be much cheaper..

Camavinga looks far better on the ball. Defensively, probably about the same. Camavinga is a different bracket of talent altogether tbh, the type of player you don’t see often at all. More Luis’ come along, and when it all comes together in the right team, they can be vitally important.

Bought him on FM20 , he’s didn’t cut it at Utd. Ran down his contract and ended up at Houston

He was class in my save. City signed him, he was very good and then Chelsea signed him for 174 million.

He's a Casemiro like player, showed to be a great tackler in youth tournaments but still not enough evidence if he'd be as dominant in that regard at a senior level. His ability on the ball is underwhelming.

Benfica signed Weigl for a stupid amount of money so he can't get any minutes there anymore and has completely lost his space in the squad. How a young player that desperately needs to play football in order to evolve but can't get minutes at a struggling Benfica team is supposed to be joining some of the best teams in the world is completely beyond me, but nothing would surprise me anymore after Gedson, Sanches and Felix.

Camavinga is more of an attacking midfielder in my view while Luís is a destroyer. Bellingham, as the other young option touted by media, is a box-to-box player. Camavinga and Bellingham are yet to have truly defined roles while Florentino Luís seems set for the DM role.

I don't think there's any truth to the rumours linking us with him, tbh. Seems to me a classic case of Portuguese media and ITKs fishing for clicks.

Why Lage dropped Florentino is a mystery to me. Because from what I've seen he was progressing well. The signing of Weigl also didn't make much sense to me. Weigl does attempt more long balls in comparison to Florentino but statistically Florentino wipes the floor with him defensively.

He doesn't play very often nor I can say i know him as a player. But as usual there's absurd overhyping in the newspapers of any youngster from Benfica. I thought Gedson was the brighter prospect but he was greatly overrated as well.

Weigl is a very good player but he was definitely not needed and they should have spent that money in other areas. I don't think he fits in this system either, Lage has definitely fecked it up.

I also don't think Florentino was that good for them, Benfica dominate pretty much all league games and a midfielder like him isn't really needed in most games. One thing is for sure, he needs to leave this summer because I don't see any way for him to gain space in that team. Should leave for a team where he can play every week though, not like Gedson to Spurs or Renato to Bayern where they won't have space to play and evolve.

He should take the Bernardo Silva/Guerreiro/Renato route and go to a Monaco/Lorient/Lille type of team where he can actually play and get better imo. So many portuguese youngsters feck up their careers by going to a big club way too soon, the media bigs them up way too much when they're not ready to meet those expectations.

I agree with with what you're saying.

But I don't understand the thinking of the Benfica board and even Bruno Lage. Lage promotes him to the first team as a teen and he's coming along nicely then Benfica sign Weigl and Lage even mentions that Samaris deserves faith which leaves Florentino in the doldrums.

I'd take him at United as a project but if not then somewhere like France or Germany where he would get regular game time would be beneficial for him. I'm not sure AC Milan would be a good move though.

Not sure what happened between him and Bruno Lage but he's a fantastic prospect for the DM role and I would like us to take advantage of the situation which has seen him play so little.
