One domination against a Newcastle sides? The likes of Busquets and Pirlo are doing it week in week out against any opposition. His time is up, I don't mind him being a dressing room presence and mentor like player, but his actual contribution on the squad (assuming we want to challenge for trophies) are redundant
I'd be good with a one-year extension for Carrick. We'll need the depth and his mentoring of younger players like Schneiderlin, Fosu-Mensah and (hopefully) Kante would serve the club well now and into the future.
As much as I still like Schweinsteiger he probably needs to move on. Definitely Fellaini. Likely Mata. Possibly Blind, although I would be opposed to ditching that particular Dutchman.

Would be awesome to get a kid like Weigl but I just keep thinking if we could get some quality on the wings that would change so much; more space in the center of the pitch, less stress on the CMs, more movement off the ball. Like a snowball effect everything about the team (and as such our stats) would improve.

I did not know who Corentin Tolisso was but damn that kid looks promising.

I think it says something about Carrick's confidence/character that he hasn't scored enough goals - he should have easily been scoring 5-10 with his wand of a foot - remember that crucial goal vrs Wigan or the beauty V Roma

Andre Gomes seems more like a ball carrier than a pure playmaker. Not the controlling influence in midfield we need.
I think Andre Gomes and Carrick are different players. Either way, we have to wait one year to replace Carrick. I agree with you about Kroos, it doesn't sound realistic... Well, if Real Madrid sign Pogba, it could be a small chance that Kroos could be available.
I'm glad that he signed a new contract. He was still our best midfielder last season even though he had his worst season. To replace Carrick means you need two things. Knows how to play as a defensive mid and knows how dictate a tempo. Either we sign 1 player who has both things or combining these two ability from two different players. Mensah + Pjanic sounds good to me. But reality Mensah is probably not ready yet and Pjanic probably choose Juve or Barca over us.

Doesn't look like we are bothering this summer, the plan for a midfield buy appears to be getting a dynamic CM that does his best work in the final 3rd.

Schneiderlin can never be a Carrick replacement, he's the guy that plays with the Carrick replacement.

I can see why people think Kante is an upgrade on Schneiderlin but neither are gonna fill Carrick's role.
Not a clone but Carrick didn't take over from Keane so much as added the type of modern deep lying playmaker we'd not had before as we looked to match up with Europe again. One of the CM's in the 3 needs to be a playmaker IMO, whether he's playing with a DM that sits like Fabrgeas with Matic, or if he's the sitter like Alonso with Modric or going further back like a Keane and Scholes with one box to box and one playmaker.
I agree, but the dictator of play doesn't need to be a defensive midfielder. Morgan could the more defensive player with someone else dictating play.
True, as I said to golden blunder you can have the playmaker next to a ball winner like Matic/Fabregas or Keane/Scholes which gives the playmaker a littler less defensive responsibility.
I'd absolutely love Matuidi here if we don't get Pogba. He's not a Carrick replacement himself, but he's still class. Very dynamic.

We have wanted a player like Marco Verratti or Luka Modric ever since we lost Scholes. Carrick came close in a period of poor midfielders.
It's not that we don't need one, it's that you just can't get one. How many teams have replaced players with like for like replacements? It hardly ever happens because it's so difficult to do. We never replaced Keane or Scholes, even Carrick wasn't the same as Scholes and lent to a different style of play.
What we need to do is find a good cm who we can fit a good system around and reinvent the way we play. If we played 433 with Carrick deep lying playmaker, maybe we need to sign a box to box and play a 4231 with more of a counter attacking system

Dier is actually decent at this.
But we aren't looking to finish 3rd as a prize, the best European teams utilize a playmaker who can use the ball effectively and control a game, and I think Poch is trying to groom Dier that way but he's still young and learning the position.
