I have been hearing a lot about the players not being good enough. How player XYZ will be better than what we already have. X might be but Y and Z might not be. Must admit my judgement is mostly misguided on such issues.
Trying to examine our most recent signings, it’s noticeable not everyone of them hits the ground running but does it mean poor scouting, not good enough or just not the player the manager wanted.

It can be any of those but I’d like to examine 20/21 signings here.
Telles
Van De Beek
Amad
Pellistri
Cavani

Oops! That’s a beautiful bunch if you ask me.Yet none of these guys is a Key player. Who do we blame?
The arguments we hearing are poor scouting, poor management or genius Ed. What about crediting players for stepping up their game. Maybe we should be examining the players they are in direct competition with.
Telles-Shaw came in as one of the better LBs in the world, seemingly the type we’ve been crying out for and he hasn’t let us down but Shaw is reacted to it in an unbelievable way.
VDB-Bruno/Pogba every time I watch him play I can’t shake the feeling we have some special in our hands. Then again how is Ole expected to drop those for him even my Nan won’t go down that lane. I don’t buy into the not an Ole signing, had this been City or Liverpool people would be crowing how brilliant a player we have on the bench ready to come on and effect the game. If he is a board signing, glad they made the call.
Amad&Pellistri-Greenwood&James
All players for the future, James we’re expecting to be already turning up and in big games what more can we ask for. Glimpses of what we’ve seen from the arrivals we have gems in our hands but it can be said Greenwood and James have shown they are no mugs.
Cavani-Martial this one fascinates me. Two very different players in my opinion. Cavani fits the bill in every way possible but Martial is just not bending over to let him have it his way. I know his form in front of goal is iffy this season but he sure making himself the man for the big games.

It should be credit to the players and not apportioning blames around. It’s a good place be for any club because we are seeing our scouting or coaches(Hah or Ed) weren’t far of in these signings. No issues with the ABUs but majority of the players they sign tend to show glimpses of their true ability after half a season and develop into starters second season. Guess what ? No one bats a lid but call it great scouting/coaching. There will always be exceptions in a few areas needing improvement but gotta start appreciating we already have some brilliant players and these signings are not fails.

I think the biggest problem when signing players is they need time to adjust to the Premier League.

With Bruno, we got him mod season so he was already upto speed and in form so he just continued and it didnt affect him as much as say someone coming in during the summer and trying to adjust to the league.

DvB is a good player, its just his game time has been badly mismanaged by Ole.
Had he been putting him into last 20/30 mins of games regularly I think by know we would have seen a much better player than we have seen so far. I think next season we will see a big difference in game.

The two youngster were the weirdest signings we’ve made. Amad will get very little time and the excuse is that hes too young, I dont see how you pay £37m for a player and not even give him the 2nd leg of the RSO game just to see how he gets on irrespective of age.

Pellestri will be here for two or three seasons be sent out on loan and eventually used as a makeshift to signing another player.

Telles has actually done great in that hes providing competition for Shaw which in turn has made Shaw play exceptionally well this season.

Cavani we only signed as we chased Sancho all season and EW needed a big name in to appease the fans. He shows us what are missing ie a focal point to spearhead the attack. Since hes come in though it seems like Martial has gotten scared and went off his game. Now that the rumours are out that Cavani leaves to join Boca at the end of the season suddenly Martial seems to have found his mojo again.

In my opinion we badly need a DoF. We need to have someone in that specialises in the footballing side. EW Judge and all those scouts are not much use unless they have someone in with them who knows how to run the football operation properly. A dof will ensure that once the next manager comes in we wouldnt need to rip up the squad and start again. When you look at the established clubs Bayern Ajax Juventus etc their managers come and go but the football aspect just continues and unless theres a major crumbling of that football project they just glide along doing the same things in terms of recruitment, whereas we have had a more car crash approach when weve changed managers. Thankfully we are stabilising abit but the fear is without that dof, once Ole goes we will just revert to type and throw too much money at average players yet again :(

As you say, Pogba and Bruno are far better than VdB but they're superstars. The question to ask there is why is he not displacing Fred (not knocking him but he's easily the most replacable). Arguably he hasn't been given a proper chance but he's looked lost whenever he comes on. Oh well, maybe he'll grow into the team next season. Fred was absolutely dire in his first year too.

Telles is decent but Shaw's been remarkable. It looks like a shrewd signing when you consider that effect.

Cavani has been better than Martial for large parts of the season but neither look completely convincing. Not surprised in either case tbh.

The kids will continue to play in the under 8's until they're ready to step up. Jury's out until they reach puberty.

Henderson is probably the best signing all year. How we picked him up on a free from Sheffield I'll never know.

Because him and Fred offer different things and not playing in the same role. Donny is more box to box or no 10 and Fred's role is neither in those category. It's similar to why Marten de Roon always play ahead of Donny aka he is starting while Donny on the bench in 2018 & 2019 because both players play different role.

Well, why would they be expected to be key players? Cavani has I think assumed a bigger role at the club than there was reason to expect. Partly because Martial has fallen well short of expectations, but also because he has delivered the goods. Telles was expected to push Shaw at left back, which he has, but I don't think anyone expected him to establish himself as the first option on left back. Amad and Pellistri are for the future. That really just leaves van de Beek, whose impact has been bafflingly inconsequential.

I think it was a poor and strange transfer window. Not one was what was really needed. Cavani to cover Martial was the easiest to understand, but straight away you knew Martial would have a strop. Cavani now picking up the same knocks he had at PSG.
Pellestri and Amad, 2 kids when we got kids coming out of our ears, and why buy 2 for the same position at the same time? We were told Amad was another Messi, then doesnt get any serious game time to see what he can do.
Telles, when we were blooding Williams to be our backup and now its thrown him off kilter.
The strangest of them all VDB. I thought this would be to replace Fred and play a different formation, but all that has happened was Ole wasted money on a player he doesnt want to play and has destroyed his confidence, so the odd game he has played, hes been a joke. There is a good player in there as shown at Ajax.
Wierd summer window.

Nobody thought or thinks Diallo is another Messi, so I really don't know who you were told that by. He's 17, and hadn't started a single Serie A game when he arrived. He was explicitly and obviously a signing for the future, and there's no reason why he'd get "serious game time" at this stage.

Telles is much better than Williams, and was IMO the signing that made the most obvious sense in terms of filling team needs.

All our signings were good but were not enough. The players that could have significantly improved our first 11 were impossible to get.

We went into the last transfer window needing a CB, a DM, a starting RW and a striker. We go into this transfer window needing the same positions. Thats the problem. We are reactive instead of proactive and end up with our 3/4/5th choices or buying players in positions that we dont need.

All the signing last year were not a priority. Nice to have but not a priority. Instead of Sancho we got two youngsters that wont be ready for years. Even if Amad started playing first team football tonight he wont be consistent for years. Cavani is knackerd and wants out. VDB is an enigma.

Telles and Cavani were brought as backup players on a budget - so check.

Amad and Pellisti were brought for the future - so “?”

VDB has done worse than most of us would have reasonably expected.

So it’s not so much how the signings have performed but more that we didn’t actually make any significant transfers in the summer to help us do better in the current season.

This has to be a wind up? He may come good eventually, but I think he may be the least impactful £40 mil(+) signing we've ever made.

This summer window you had Rio and Evra going on public with how the things are run in the club. Couldn't get more obvious who's to blame and how the window looked like.

There's still important matches till the end of the season, so the judgement on players will come in May. Right now we are battling Leicester for 2nd and trying to progress to any kind of final. Can't deny, I like what I see from some of our lads, but it has to be maintained few months more.

Lots to worry about and in the same time lot of details being done right to stay hopeful.

I don’t even laugh at my own jokes, they are that bad.
That wasn’t referring to his general contribution in games, he just looks a baller to me and if he can shake off whatever is holding him back there is something there for me. If he can’t do here we’d just cut our loses and he’ll do it somewhere else. It’s football not all transfers work out.
