That's what happens when the court allows public opinion to influence it's actions. For no other crime is unrelated testimony admissable in court.

For sure. He's serving 16 years for another case in California.

Appeals courts tend to give a lot of deference to the trial judge about admitting evidence, so it must have been quite egregious and had the potential to taint the decision to overturn the conviction.
