With the top four teams of the six 3rd placed finishers qualifying, how many points do you think it will take to qualify?

I imagine there might be a couple of those teams tying on 3 points and it will come down to goal difference.

Easy to forget the actual tournament winners only got 3 points in group stage last time.

Just look at the 2016 edition. 3 points and a positive GD more or less guarantees qualification.

You can qualify from groups at the next World Cup with just 1 point :)

4 points is more than enough, and 1 or 2 maybe even with 3 can do it.

Suffice to say things would have to go really badly for most countries not to make the last 16. It's a ridiculous set-up, just have a 32 team format and be done with it or go back to 16.

3 draws at that, God they were a chore to watch
Actually the game against Áustria they completely dominated that game and missed a penalty, not to mention a ball in the woodwork, but the narrative is that they were inferior to all the opponents. And on the knockout stages they only suffered one goal in four games with a extra time vs France.

Ah, actually it was 3 extra times, certainly not the most attractive one to watch, but I keep my point, on the knockout stages the team was very competitive, a lot of people mention the draws but it’s not true they were inferior in all the matches. Against France yes, but it was predictable that.

4 will guarantee, 3 will probably be a 50/50 shot.
4 points does not guarantee. We Norwegians should know, having finished on 4 points and yet ending up last in our group in World Cup 94.

The way that happens is if all 4 teams get a win, a draw, and a loss. Then it's down to GD, or more likely as it was in our case, number of goals scored.

Bad wording. Meant it more like if you get 4 points this year you will go through IMO without a doubt, whereas there might be 2 teams who finish on 3 points in 3rd and one might go out while the other goes on.

Definitely 4.

3 if you are extremely lucky and have a very advantageous GD in your favour.

Provided you finish 3rd, yes. :)

I think Wales or Swizerland may both fail to win a single game and thus end up on 2 points at best.

Also think Finland might stay at 3 points.

Thus 4 points should be enough and maybe 3 and beat Finlands goal difference.

Thats when Irelands goal against Mexico in a 2-1 defeat made the difference wasnt it? Crazy permutations.
