What happened to them?

Insane rise in level and popularity between 2013 to 2018 , but looks like they are back to their pre-2012 levels.

They have gone massively backwards since the WC in Russia. Being dominated and thoroughly beaten by North Macedonia at home now (Reykjavik was a tough place to go to and win a game just 4 years ago).

Was it just bad managerial succession planning, some internal mismanagement or just they stopped producing decent talents ? Any locals can shed some more light?

Well they're missing their best player of course for "undisclosed reasons." But many know what's going on there.

And most of their spine is pretty old now so just the end of the cycle for the 2012 generation. Unrealistic to think they'll keep making tournaments. Don't know if they've got another talented crop coming through but will be tough considering their population to produce one as good as last decade.

We played the same team for almost 8 years more or less. These guys who are playing now are born around 2000 that are playing for us now. There are just too many changes to the team in such a short space of time. This team will need couple of years to grow just like the team that did all those great things needed when they started. Plus the federation is a mess and the coaches are well not necessarily inspirational to say the least.
This will take some years to get to any decent standard again.

There are actually various allegations against multiple players. The team won’t recover for a while and the Icelandic team won’t be making any headlines (at least not good ones) for a while.

You are aware Iceland has a population of around 350k right? That is about the size of a large London Borough.

For me this was always going to happen to them. They had a golden generation which is now ending. Expecting them to keep it up is ridiculous as it was a boarderline miracle they had one good enough to qualify for tournaments to begin with.
