I don't see a thread yet, so...

Another of our former players has died. RIP John Fitzpatrick.

He was a tough midfielder but my abiding memory was he and Denis Law having a blazing row on the pitch (at Selhurst Park if I remember right). Fists flew - and it was certainly not handbags at 20 paces. Today, they'd have both been sent of but the ref let it go and it passed (although not quickly).

Remember him well. Not a regular in the team but always put a shift in. Played full back or half back if my memory isn't failing me. Popular with the fans. A Scot and a bit of a Denis Law wannabe. RIP Fitzy!

A terrace favourite, a real fiery, whole hearted player. I used to love watching him play for us. RIP John.

Could play in various positions, full back, wing half and inside forward, signed for utd., as a 15 year old and retired at the age of 26 due to a medical condition in the knees. Made his first team debut when he came on as a substitute for Denis Law

Manchester United would like to send condolences to the family and friends of John Fitzpatrick, who has sadly passed away at the age of 74.

The Scotsman will always be part of the club's history after becoming the first substitute used by the club in a league match, replacing Denis Law during a defeat to Tottenham in October, 1965.

He won the FA Youth Cup with the Reds in 1964, as a side also containing George Best beat Swindon Town in the two-legged final.

The versatile performer had become a regular by the time of the 1970/71 season, replacing Shay Brennan at full-back in the side. Unfortunately, knee problems ended his top-flight career prematurely, at the age of 26.

In total, John made 147 appearances for United, 141 as a starter, and scored 10 goals.

Former team-mate Alex Stepney was quick to pay tribute, posting on social media: “So sad to hear that John Fitzpatrick has passed away. John was a fantastic man and a terrific footballer. RIP John, one of the good guys, all my love to family x.”

Everybody at Manchester United would like to echo those sentiments and send condolences at this difficult time.

He lived in Aberdeen and my Dad would regularly see and speak to him when out walking the dog.
Lovely guy.
