Jon Edwards was a great athlete, one of Britains finest. His only major flaw was that he was such a damn Bible-basher. He took his injury as a "sign from God, to retire". He's crazy, like all Bible-bashers. But a great triple jumper.

Do you go to church Redeus? Or attend organised worship at whichever religion you follow?

No. Why do you ask?
Because if you were you would be quite likely to encounter Jonathan Edwards in the course of your church activities.

He does a lot of educational work for the Church of England.

The man's not crazy, he's got a level of faith that characterises the extremely devout.

That's nice of him. His faith has played a part in his fantastic career, but I'm not too keen on God-botherers to be honest.
God has no place in sport, unless of course, you're Diego Maradona.

But it does actually.

Here's how: Mental strength is extremely important in sport. And it requires an anchor. Fairly often, that anchor is religion. Edwards is an athlete who publicly makes his faith known, but there are a fair few more who keep quiet.

Personally I believe that leaping 18.29m was a direct result of the mental strength and self belief that he gets from his faith in God. It's a fantastic record and if you look at the world championship event he retired in, the winner only jumped 17.7m or some such. It's going to stand like Bob Beamon's record did - for decades, more likely than not.
