Jose Mourinho Sack Watch | Sacked per 19-04

Say what you want about Levy but he won't half put up with a rant like the one after Sevilla loss. Levy sent Harry's ass packing for flirting with the England job.

Should have sacked him right there and then. It would have set the standard and message about the club.

It also came right after he got Sanchez on that insane deal.

Tottenham is a mess and has been poorly run for a while; they have let the team rot, really. Players have not been replaced and depth has not been maintained. The signings they have made have not been good enough.

Their wing-back situation is a good example.

2016-17: Walker, Rose, Trippier, and Davies (Quality in-depth and the first-team)
2017-18: Rose, Trippier, Davies, and Aurier (Drop off, but still strong)
2018-19: Rose, Trippier, Davies, and Aurier
2019-20: Rose, Davies, Aurier (Rose wants to leave - disinterested and injury-prone) - weak.

Only now have they started to fix it with Doherty, but this has happened to multiple areas in the team. There is a lot to fix and they haven't done anywhere near enough business so far.

A very difficult job.

They haven't replaced 2016-17 Dele Alli, and have stuck with this one for too long.

They haven't replaced Eriksen

They haven't replaced Vertonghen

They have potentially only just replaced Wanyama, who became injury-prone in 2017/18. A very good player for them before that.

What’s actually happened to Dele Alli?

Hype went to his head i think. He can be very good but he lacks consistency.
Being young and english propelled him to a "future star" status too soon. He's had some injuries but he could use better players around him that i doubt Spurs will be able to give him.
Will either join United in a 60M deal or go to Brighton in 2024 on a free transfer

We have Lo Celso and N'Dombele - they should fill that creative hole. Problem is Lo Celso is injured and N'Dombele hasn't adjusted to the league yet and feck knows if he ever will.

I'm not seen much of him but I know he has some quality. His case reeks of Fred.

A good role player, who can play very good if given minutes and trust.

It's not rocket science.

He really is finished as a top manager isn’t he? He was a fantastic coach and has achieved everything but he is finished at the highest level if I was him I would take a break or retire after this Spurs gig.
Poor Spurs fans going from the easy on the eye Poch style to his sh*t

I used to be such massive fan of this guy and was over the moon when he joined us but my god what a fall from grace.

I can't see any top team in Europe after him once he leaves Spurs (if it carries on like this). He just sucks the life and passion out of anywhere he goes now. Constantly negative. Always whining about something. Humiliating players in public.

Such a contrast to mangers like Ole, Pep, Klopp who actually do the opposite and lift spirits/team moral.

Good riddence

Tottenham have been in decline for a while, midfield is a big problem for them. Winks, should not be a starter, good squad option for cups, Europa, etc. Sissoko, definitely has the engine, power and athleticism, lacks footballing chops, not great at picking a pass or shooting. Hojbjerg, serviceable DM, don't think he is good enough closer to the opposition box to be the box to box role for a club looking for top 4. Ndombele, definitely has the talent, has he got the motivation and desire to put in the hard yards? Or could just end up another Taraabt.

The youth crew, Lo Celso, Skipp, Fernandes. Lo Celso does look a player tbf, was Spurs best player towards the end of last season. But none of these are close to what Dembele was for Spurs in midfield, who himself was a step down from Modric. There is a reason Luka Modric was chased by Chelsea and has been at the core of RM's midfield for the past what? 5 years?

Would any top four team take a midfielder from Spurs for their starting 11?

The mirror are shite but if this isn't true now, it will be in a few months

He managed to bring Chelsea close to the relegation zone before getting sacked hopelessly he does one better this season. The man has no class and he will be outed as the fraud he has become this season without money to spend.

Other way around is, they had superb manager who improved fullbacks like Walker and Rose, so much that they were considered as best fullback duo in the league, promoted player from academy who went on to become one of the best player in the league, signed player from league 1 or 2, who became one of the best attacking player in the league. Same with players like Eriksen, Vertonghen who all improved so much under previous manager.

Now they hired manager who is past it and makes even good players look like average ones.

It's not players all the time, it's amazing how everywhere Jose ends up, players get the blame for his failures.

No idea why he keeps working when so miserable.

Take a break and find some joy FFS. Then might see old Mou back.

I don't get how people don't see this.

People criticise Spurs' players for their lack of work rate, but every Mourinho team in the past few years for multiple teams play like this. This isn't them not showing effort - this is them playing Mourinho's way.

Yeah, I said this so many times. We went from top 3-5 in distance covered to bottom 3 under Jose. Spurs were bitch team to play against with their workrate under Poch, now these players are called lazy under Jose.

He's taken a few long breaks though. It seems to help for a season or so, but then he reverts back to being miserable again.

I think the idea of being a National Team manager, in his head, seems unappealing because he likes to be busy and work day-today. But I think it would suit him more. He'd get a competitive tournament every other year and his players wouldn't have to put up with him every day. Mourinho seems like someone you can only take in small doses. He'll be wonderful company for a day or two, but then start moaning because you breathe too loud from day 3.

Mourinho should always be the side bitch, not the one you marry. As a National Team manager, he gets to do that. Players unhappy at their club will get to use Mourinho as their escape.

It was an incredibly disappointing and worrying performance yesterday. I feel like all the hope I had for this season has gone after the first 90 mins. There appears to be an issue with mentality at the club - it's been like this for many years as you all know and has remained through several managers. The lack of fight and determination yesterday was unforgivable though, especially for the first game of the season. I'm very worried and if things don't dramatically improve soon Jose will be going but unfortunately I think if that happens then the NEXT manager will have exactly the same problems - something is rotten at the club and in the squad.

Im afraid a lot of Spurs fans over estimated Mourinho last season, especially after lockdown. The reality is that you were headed for a disastrous season before Covid intervened and enabled you to finish the campaign with players who would have otherwise missed the run in. You play dreadful football because your manager is past his sell by date. I think Spurs will have a fight on for top ten this season.

I am so glad he is not our manager. He thinks so highly of himself I think he barely even tries anymore. The criticism of his own players looks increasingly like him just wishing he was back at a club with a huge bankroll, which he will never see again.

I think Spurs have done poor business this summer and the names floating around as backups for Kane sound shite too.

But the same players dropped off under Pochettino.

Alderwereild, Vertonghen, Eriksen, and Rose all wanted to leave under Pochettino. Their performances dropped off massively.

In 2017/18, they were the 2nd most effective pressing team in the league after City. I remember the game where they almost pressed Liverpool off the pitch.

In 2018/19, with no signings, they dropped off to below 10th in pressing. Why? Players became disinterested, injury prone, or their level fell permanently. The effort they were putting in was far less.

Their team just isn't that good anymore. They have some good players in attack, but their midfield and defence are poor.
Albeit, I don't remember much about this Hojbjerg.

Even in attack, it is only the first team that is good. Their depth is non-existent. No real backup striker at all, which has been a problem for a couple of seasons.

That team has a whole lot of problems to fix. They need more signings.

Exactly. It’s also blowing my mind that people keep falling for the “it’s the players” excuse he keeps pushing. I dread to think of what the United team would have looked like if he’d stayed on. What footballer these days would want to play under him? He doesn’t have the pull any more, just a miserable bastard that’s living off his heyday, which is now becoming a distant memory. He’s finished and should just retire from management and go full time with Sky Sports.

Jose has done nothing to improve them, he has sidelined their record signing just like he tried to do with Martial.

They have Kane, Son, Alli, Bergwin, Lucas, Lamela. That's a good enough bunch of attackers.

They have Sanchez, Toby as their CBs but somehow Jose wants to play Dier in any position possible.

They have Lo Celso, Ndomble as their creative midfielders. That's more than 120 million worth of talent + players like Winks, Gedson Fernandes, Sissoko, Hojbjerg. That's good midfield if he sets his team to attack rather than play deep and try to play long ball to Kane.

Every club have problem areas, but somehow with Jose everything is magnified. Poch reached CL finals with same bunch of players and yes it came to end as with most managers at clubs for long time. They still have good players but needed good manager but ended with Jose which means their players will look worse than they are, problems will look bigger than they are.

Lloris

Doherty
Sanchez
Toby
Davies

Hojbjerg
Lo Celso
Ndombele/Bergwin

Son
Kane
Alli

That's a good team, since he prefers 4-2-3-1, it means he will have players like
Aurier
Foyth
Dier
Tanganga

Winks
Sissoko

Lucas
Lamela
Gedson Fernandes

As his second team, with players like Ndombele, Ryan Sessegnon available too.

Since they have Jose, it will be always players who are not good enough.

That's really odd with him. He used to by fiery and flamboyant, now he just looks old, angry and bitter.

I don't think anyone is claiming that the blame is all on Mourinho , that the Spurs squad is brilliant and that if they sacked him tomorrow Spurs would go on to win the Title or anything like that.

They have a lot of players in their squad that need replacing and it feels like they need a big overhaul as Pochettino was saying about 15 months ago to be fair.

The issue is if you need to overhaul your squad and you don't have endless money to do it why on earth would you bring in Mourinho?

Also makes me respect Sir Alex’s achievements even more. His longevity was insane.

SAF career is all about consistency through constant evolution, he would have been a great manager in any field. The man isn't too proud which is a great quality that has allowed him to question his methods and learn from his assistants and other managers.

I have asked myself the same question, I still think that he should have gone to clubs like Lyon or Monaco and embrace the idea of working with younger players without putting too much pressure on himself or his image, somewhere where he can just focus on the game.

He seems to have got worse since Rui Faria left his side.

His decline is worse than Wengers. Wenger didn’t have much cash. Where as Mourinho was given a lot with us and it was terrible. Wengers main philosophy was to attack and Arsenal were still good at that albeit not as good as they were once under Wenger. When was last time we seen a Mourinho defensive masterclass? For a manager who sets his teams up defensively they don’t seem to defend well.

Teams will still hire him though just like they hire Pullis or Allardyce. He’d just need to lower his wage demands after the Spurs job.

He’s lost that motivation and I swear he’s just now taking jobs like Sven was to just get a pay off.

I do agree that on paper at least we should have a good enough squad to be challenging for top 4 and silverware. The lack of desire and pressing in the match at the weekend was really worrying though - Jose can complain about fitness and so on but it's been the same for all the clubs - things need to change and very quickly - it feels like our season could be over before it even begins which is a ridiculous thing to say but that is how it feels right now.

The best I can think of is the match v us when football resumed after the lockdown. Hardly a masterclass though, but he managed a point from a game that they shouldn't have got anything from.

It really does demonstrate his decline.

Also makes me respect Sir Alex’s achievements even more. His longevity was insane.

SAF evolved and didn't let his ego get in front of the team. Think how different he was day 1 compared to his retirement in terms of being 'hands on'. Football is always evolving and the brand of football he was best able to coach, the type he grew up with, moved on and so he moved on with it. We had so many different coaches and squad rebuilds that were pretty much always successful because he didn't try to do everything - he controlled it but he trusted people more as he got older.

That's where I think Mou really falls down because just watching the Amazon documentary, he always seems the main coach in training and wants to be the main guy at every single meeting. It makes sense that more and more people question his style of football because he's moving further and further away from the football he built his early career on. He's never built a pressing team before but he seems to think he can do it despite failing at United - this time though he can't spend $400m on players to paper over the cracks and it's really showing. Spurs have a great squad - they should be fighting for top four and at least being close to CL places if players can stay fit but they don't need to do it with this style of football.

I understand people here will never judge him fairly but he handled the situation pretty well imo.

When was last time we seen a Mourinho defensive masterclass?
I think the last time we saw them consistently was his first season back with us. The signs his "masterclass" magic was waning was actually in the 14/15 title winning season, we were quite poor in big games but luckily Courtois kept saving us (the biggest example would be the cup semi against Liverpool, we got absolutely battered in both legs but Tibo played like superman especially in the first leg at Anfield).

How about the two best defensive records we got in post-Fergie era?

Yeah and I remember the City game in his first season back. Ivanovic scored a good goal and Matic was amazing that game.

But now his defensive master class and home records are failing.

How about the two best defensive records we got in post-Fergie era?
I've said this before when people praised us defensively under Mourinho but, imo, that was mainly down to de Gea having absolutely incredible, out of this world seasons prior to the world cup. Opposition teams were creating chances at will against us and he single-handedly kept us alive. We never looked that solid defensively as a team under him to me. We had some good defensive performances as a team like against Ajax in the final, and a home win against Chelsea, but they were very rare.

How about the two best defensive records we got in post-Fergie era?

What?

Name me good defensive performances. @Yagami gave you two and those were rare. If he was happy with our defence, why every summer he wanted another centre back to blame? De Gea was amazing in those seasons too and I never felt we were a great defensive team like Chelsea or Inter were under Mourinho.
