'tis a silly place
Journalists love themes and narrative. They'll end up making statements like the ones Pete has in the OP after the first round of games, they just can't help themselves.

Sunderland-Fulham will lead with how English players are being squeezed out of the Premier League. Di Canio and Jol will be the villains for buying lots of dastardly foreigners.

One thing you can be sure of is that whatever narratives they opt for this weekend, we'll be stuck with them for the next four months, regardless of what actually happens in the football.

EDIT: Haven't actually read the OP, because it's Pete so I assume he's on a wind-up in one way or another. So if there's something inflammatory that I should be getting mad about, this is why I'm not.

Hopefully de Gea flaps at a cross at some stage so we can have another five or six months of "de Gea: Shitty foreign charlatan, or something much, much worse?"

Journos all way overrate the effects of transfers and managers on a club's prospects, it seems from a quick scan of their preseason thoughts.

I cannot for the life of me understand how Chelsea are so fancied for the league just because of Mourinho. Their defence still looks dodgy.

It also appears to be received wisdom in journo circles that city were 'better' than us last season and our manager won us the league, which is clear nonsense. The anomaly if there was one was them winning it, and was mostly caused by the amount of injuries we had that season. Our squad is clearly better than theirs, with much more strength in depth in defence and attack.

I can buy it being tighter this year especially as city have strengthened but I don't buy the three way battle really and I think United are clearly still the team to beat. I think only Oliver Kay predicted us to win it. Bizarre.

Journos decide what they want to happen and then invent a world in which it actually will. It doesn't seem to matter if it makes any sense or not.

I don't get why City would be fancied over United when they weren't even close to them last season and have signed some players that not a single journalist has demonstrated they know the first thing about.

They pretty much unanimously decided Moyes was the perfect choice to replace Fergie, then based on nothing changing at all, decide United will fail because of him.

Mourinho will get at least 6 months of acting like a complete cock before any journo will admit he isn't some form of god. If his spell at Real is anything to go by he's going to get tiring for everyone else very quickly.

Real will be installed as nearly all journos favourites to win the CL if they sign Bale...their own rating of the "Mourinho factor" will suddenly be conveniently ignored when applying it to him leaving a club.

Basically they all talk self contradictory shite and should be ignored...though I do reckon it'll be a lot closer this season.
