Sanders stuns Wladimir Klitschko to win WBO heavyweight title

HANNOVER, Germany - Wladimir Klitschko, widely considered the top contender to Lennox Lewis' throne, was stunned by 37-year-old South African Corrie Sanders on Saturday in a fight for the WBO heavyweight title.

Sanders recorded a second-round technical knockout of the heavily favored Klitschko, using big left hooks to drop the 6-7 giant twice in each round. Referee Genaro Rodriguez stopped the fight 27 seconds into the second round.

Klitschko suffered just his second loss, falling to 40-2 with 37 knockouts. He was seeking his sixth successful defense of the lightly regarded WBO crown in the opener of a nine-fight HBO deal.

Klitschko's brother, Vitali, is ranked No. 1 by the WBC and WBA and is waiting for a possible fight with Lewis. The brothers are from the Ukraine, although they spent much of their early careers in Germany.

The 6-4 Sanders improved to 39-2 by recording his 29th knockout. He won his 24th consecutive fight and just missed his 19th first-round KO.

Sanders knocked down Klitschko twice in the final minute of the opening round. Klitschko never recovered from the first left hook that sent him to the canvas.

It was a stunning performance by Sanders, who had fought only three rounds since being knocked out three years ago by former champion Hasim Rahman.

Klitschko had not fought since his victory over Jameel McCline last December. He also moved up the ranks in the heavyweight division with an impressive knockout of Ray Mercer.

Just watched it repeated on sky.I thought this Klitshcko was a good fighter he outweighed the guy by about a stone and a half aswell.Did he even land a punch <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" /> .Unbelievable he said he could take Lewis at any time aswell.Couldn't even knock out one of lewis's kids by that display.

Frankly I'm stunned he lost. He has brutalized his opponents each time i've seen him. I'm thinking that he just overlooked his opponent, similar to the way Lennox Lewis overlooked Hasim Rahman a couple of years ago. I think he'll bounce back since he's still young and very talented.

Watched the fight.. and it seemed to me that VK, didn't respect his opponent... however, he was cruelly exposed..as he couldn't find an answer to the South Africans south paw style.. frankly he looked totally lost!! one more thing... these guys can't take a punch..and iam including Lewis n'all(hides behind his jab)... it took one punch to really hurt Wlads. Ali, Frazier, Holyfield et all, were tough..like gladiators..they always got back up and fought like champions.. Iam not sure whether VK's got it..its not the first time he's been beaten by a journeyman...

great shame..because i wanted this guy to be the real thing.

(At this rate Roy Jones will mop up the division! ;) )

I guess he never really recovered from the first knockdown.

Now Roy Jones is the only real challenger. He should just go right to Lewis and take no chances.

I don't think Lennox is interested in fighting Roy and vice versa for now. Roy matches up well against the shorter Heavyweights. He beat Ruiz, could likely beat Holyfield and would probably give Tyson a good run. BUT - when it comes to taller punchers who can keep him at bay with their jabs then I think he will find it harder to get his shots in. Lennox, The Kitschkos, Chris Byrd would probably stand a good chance of beating Roy.
