[7] Some things never change
Saturday, July 19, 2003

BBC
Chelsea's new era under Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich started with a 2-0 defeat to Lazio, a friendly that was marred by racist abuse. Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink suffered the worst treatment with nearly every one of his touches greeted by a chorus of monkey chants from a section of the home supporters. Some Lazio fans even taunted their only black player, Fabio Liverani.

What a lovely bunch.

'tis a silly place
No way am I condoning racist chanting, although on the flip side of the coin what about sections of the Chelsea support wishing cancer on Beckham's family? No way around these lunatics I'm afraid, unless FIFA/UEFA acts now to stop the rot. Perhaps banning sections of the stadiums of the worst offenders.

Some things never change, right: tabloids or fake journalists, who steal money instead of learning how to work!
I was there, it was a fantastic night, but many booed Liverani because he refused to move to Udinese and a huge business (Pizarro, Jorgensen and Alberto to Lazio, Liverani and cash to Udinese) was about to be cancelled! (The biggest boos went for Colonnese, who refused to move to Napoli. Colonnese is a white guy.)
Liverani was NOT booed because of his skin colour, but for this reason! And, second lie, he is not our only black player: we also have Cesar. Both him and Liverani were among the players that saved Lazio by signing the financial deal with the new property, and Liverani was even called by our main ultras group in Curva Nord during one of the last games of the season, and he threw the jersey to the fans: the whole stadium applauded!

One last thing, for you tabloid readers: yesterday another black player started playing for us: Ousmane Dabo from Atalanta, signed two days ago! He entered the pitch in the last minutes and was, of course, applauded in great fashion!

ps: Hasselbaink was booed because he had an argument with a Lazio player after a tackle. The same happended to Zenden, for another tackle. Guess what? Zenden is a white guy.

You dumb ignorant tabloid readers. <img src="graemlins/smirk.gif" border="0" alt="[Smirk]" />

You may take for granted that the media and most folk on here will take Lazio fan reaction in the worst possible light. However, I think the main issue might not be why the fans were chanting and directing their outrage at select players, but the nature of the chants--i.e, monkey chants at Jimmy Floyd, but not Zenden.

I think the purpose of the abuse piled on players by the fans is to upset and distract the players and get them to NOT concentrate on the game--whether it's comments about marital fidelity, sexual orientation, financial problems, drug habits--some thing direct and personal related to the individual being verbally abused by the paying customers. However, it would appear that UEFA has chosen to exempt skin color and country of nation origin from the approved list of topics for ridicule. Whether use of such factors actually reflects true "racism" on the part of the fans or is primarily a means of throwing the player off his game is a moot point, anymore.
UEFA won't always take the most intelligent or effective method of addressing issues, but they do know how to blame the English fans for most of the problems in European society--so check to see if there were any Limeys in the crowd during the match--it must have been them doing the chants.

Forgive my ignorance, Fresno Bob: what is a Limey?

I say it again: there were no racists abuses, it's a fashion among ultras here to booh (and not the "uh uh uh" sound, the monkey) players no matter their skin color. The last time we had problems with this matter (monkey sounds, etc) was three years ago.
But of course it is so easy for you all to swallow the easy story of Nazio and their terrible racist thugs.
Strange though, every given time a friend from abroad comes to a Lazio game, he/she then says to me: "Hey, what a wonderful time I had, but weren't you supposed to be racists and violent?"

Uefa and tabloid readers. Bleah... <img src="graemlins/smirk.gif" border="0" alt="[Smirk]" />

"Limey" is an American term referring to us Britons, meant to be slightly disparaging with a hint of joviality. We have a counter-term for Americans, that being "Fat Yankee Bastards". During these times of war and oil plundering however, we have to be more politically correct towards our American allies, thus have taken out the "Fat" part (which let's face it, is becoming rapidly redundant anyway).

Persil, your defence of Nazio and its racist fans is admirable and I hope one day Rome joins the rest of western Europe in quelling racism and accepting footballers of all colours and nationalities. How Gazza survived the abuse he took for being both fat and a Geordie at the hands of the merciless hounds of Nazio, I'll never know.

Redeus,
thanks for the detailed and funny answer. Too bad though, you seem a clever bloke but end up with the same old, trite story of my team being nazi and such.
I am against all racism, I am a far left voter, I was the first to point the finger against the little minority among our ultras who behaved like assholes, but things have changed, in the last years. Things like that don't happen anymore, you must turn to the second team in the Eternal City, to find racist abuses (the nazi banner against Ajax, for example).
But then again, it must be so easy to live on clichés and to keep your eys shut, even when you have a weekly witness like me to give you the true news on the scenario.
Bon appetit... <img src="graemlins/smirk.gif" border="0" alt="[Smirk]" />

And Stalin was chairman of the Communist party... racism and left wing political views are not mutually exclusive.

You defend Lazio's record saying that it is blown out of all proportion and then hypocritically do the same towards Roma.

Now I'm not calling you a racist... I'm not saying all other Lazio fans are racist... but are you prepared to admit that a minority of your fans have on occasion oversteped the bounds of decencey with overtly racist behaviour?? and to not then begin a diatribe about Roma? simply admit that Lazio have in the past been at fault...

Furthermore the fact that there was an audiable difference in the treatment Hassilbank suffered in comparison to Zenden was an example of this... because how you could be in that stadium and say it was booing as opposed to monkey chants belies belief... I did not read about it in tabloids... I watched it on Eurosport so unless you are accusing Sky of dubbing monkey chanting onto a life game every time Jimmy Floyd got the ball please admit that there was some element of overt racism directed towards him by a proportion of the croud.

Oh and dont think I want to single out Lazio... I was fecking discusted by the:

"I'd rather be a p*ki than a Turk" chanting during the England game...

But at least I'm prepared to say yes we do have an element of this... and I have no respect for that element of the croud... now are you prepared to accept that there is a similar element at Lazio... or will you blindly defend the element of racist Lazio fans?

oh hang on maybee the English fans were singimg:

"I'd rather be a Poppy than a Turk"

And it was realy all about flower power... come on you see how stupid your argument looks...

Admiting the problem is usually the first step to overcoming it.

I don't believe "Limey" is of Septic origin, but was slang for members of the British Navy, circa 1780's, as Captain James Cook (or a doctor on his ship) figured out that by eating limes, his crew could stave off scurvy, which was then a major problem with the poorly fed conscripts of His Majesty's Navy.

Was out with a friend last night who studied in Rome for a semesta. Her and her (black) friend got given tickets for a Lazio - Fioro game. They lasted less than ten minutes before having to leave because of the abuse they were getting, they were even spat on as they left the ground.

I'm sure it was for something they said though, cause everyone knows this wouldn't happen with Lazio fans, no racists there.

Percy reminds me of scousers who say Liverpool fans had nothing to do with the trouble at Heysel.... truly classy fans <img src="graemlins/wenger.gif" border="0" alt="[Wenger]" />

An abiding memory I have of Nazio fans was when the team's star racist (Milhalovic) was accused of racicially abusing a black player. Lazio's resident Arkan attempted to atone for his sin by giving a speech to the fans at the Stadio Olimpico. This speech (even though it was said through gritted teeth) spoke of the evils of racism and how blacks should be accepted in football and other politically correct messages. Almost half the stadium bellowed out boos and jeers to this wonderful message, while most of the rest applauded.

This suggests that at least HALF of Lazio's fans are racists, therefore the club merits the racist tag it has acquired. Nazio has done next to nothing to combat racism, especially when you compare it to the strides we great English fans have made in order to fight racism.
We may not have reached the Promised Land just yet, but we at least have taken many steps closer to it. You Nazio fans are still stuck in your starting blocks.

Please forward the following link to your swastika brandishing friends, in the hope that they may join me, you, and all other true football fans in condemning racism in football.

Those who booed and jeered were Roma supporters, on an insidious undercover mission to make Nazio look like a bunch of racists when nothing could be further from the truth...

Many of you surprise me more and more. Really. I give it up. And I am not even getting angry anymore, it's just not worth it.
If you can't even read my messages, when I say that yes, we HAD a problem, it WAS a problem at our stadium with a dull minority of assholes, then there's no room anymore for discussion. End of story. I can't defeat biased mind.
Live you little life of prejudism, go ahead.
The only way to change your mind is to come to the stadium here in Rome. If any of you happen to come over here, I'll be glad to show him/her around. Seriously.
In the meantime, bon appetit with your tabloid diet. Don't burp too loud, though. it could be mistaken as a racist abuse by some granny on the tube.

Oh and I suppose these people 'misheard' the monkey chants <a href="http://www.abc.net.au/sport/content/s905701.htm" target="_blank">http://www.abc.net.au/sport/content/s905701.htm</a>
<a href="http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sportsnews/view/44852/1/.html" target="_blank">http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sportsnews/view/44852/1/.html</a>

oh and the Eurosport commentators

and me and the people i was watching the game with

oh and Mancini

Lazio and Chelsea, who finished fourth in their respective leagues, have both qualified for the Champions League but must overcome a two-legged third round qualifying match to claim a place in the group stages. Mancini was upset by the way the home fans turned on Liverani and booed Chelsea's black players. "I'm very sorry, it's not pleasant," he said. "It spoilt what was otherwise an enjoyable evening." <a href="http://www.al-seyassah.com/arabtimes/sports/view.asp?msgID=652" target="_blank">http://www.al-seyassah.com/arabtimes/sports/view.asp?msgID=652</a>

now are you man enough to admit that there was racist chanting at the chelsea game and that it is not acceptable for that behaviour to go unckecked because people such as yourself deney it happened when it was transmitted live around the world and your manager apologised to Chelsea for it... But at least he is man enough to admit the problem and condem it... I support him in condeming these racists...

do you now admit there was racist chanting during the Chelsea game and condem the people responsible? and if not why not?

Remember:
Mancini was upset by the way the home fans turned on Liverani and booed Chelsea's black players. "I'm very sorry, it's not pleasant," he said. "It spoilt what was otherwise an enjoyable evening."

or did mancini mishear the booing as well?

Furthermore if the word of your manager is not enough to indicate to you that there is a racist problem with Lazio I would like to refer you to

<a href="http://banners.noticiasdot.com/termometro/boletines/autor/docs/eumc/2003/eumc_Football.pdf" target="_blank">http://banners.noticiasdot.com/termometro/boletines/autor/docs/eumc/2003/eumc_Football.pdf</a>

This is a report by the European Monitoring Centre on Racism and Xenophobia which studdied "Racism Football and the Internet" and was published in 2002 as you will see Lazio are not alone in this problem although they do get a special mention on page 9 of the report...

I think this is the site in question <a href="http://www.irriducibili.com/prima.html" target="_blank">http://www.irriducibili.com/prima.html</a>

very different from your Lazio.net ... but Im not saying your racist... only asking if you admit the problems at the clelsea game and if so will you then condem those fans responsible.

Oh and I think its good the club went to the anti racism thing... It shows that the people in charge are prepared to admit a problem and do something about the racist minority... shame you declined the oppertunity to condem them as well.

mind you its all media bias isnt it piers... me, the tabloibs, independent news stations, sky overdubbing monkey chants and getting their commentators to talk about it... I meen even The European Monitoring Centre on Racism and Xenophobia and your own manager disagree with you...

now Piers... do you admit there was racist chanting at the Chelsea game... yes or no

If yes do you condem that racist abuse?

If no how do you explain the sources I have quoted including your own manager and the fact that it was clearley audiable during the live broadcast of the game?
