Why is this so important to some people? We've witnessed plenty of successful CB partnerships, even in modern football, where both were right-footed.
  • Vidic - Ferdinand
  • Ramos - Pepe/Varane
  • Puyol - Pique
  • Cahill - Terry in 2014/15
  • Van Dijk - Gomez/Matip
You buy the best CB that's realistically available. Being left-footed shouldn't be that high on the priority list.

It's not important. It's just one of those dumb Redcafe things.

Maguire for instance is a LCB irrespective of being right footed. That's where he plays. But the caf is now caught up on the idea of needing a left footed center back.

Though admittedly someone like Smalling is a lot more comfortable on the right than the left. But that's just because he's quite one footed. A lot of right footed CBs grow up playing on the left side and are very well adjusted to it.

Dutch managers are also obsessed with this. Does my head in.

It isnt important, but maybe it becomes more important when you're happy to go to 3 at the back. Thats something we've gone to plenty of times this season and presumably if we are looking specifically for a left footed CB then its something we are looking to continue to do

Yep. Don’t get it. It’s like saying your 2 CMs need to be right and left footed. No. Just get the best two players you can that complement each other.

Pep's quotes on Laporte explain the theory:

"He is left-footed playing on the left side. He helps us to make our build-up and when the ball comes from the right, he immediately controls to the left and plays it to Sane - that is quicker than we would play with a right-footer in that position.

"When he goes and drives a little bit to the middle so he can play the balls to the right side, he gives us two alternatives to make our game quicker.

It helps us to create this build-up and another build-up. With the right it's always the same build-up. It's a little bit more complicated. It’s so important to have a left-footed central defender."

He's honestly just fecking with people. His CB partnerships over the years have been Puyol Pique, Pique Mascherano, Boateng Hummel's. All right footed players.

Admittedly a left footed CB opens up the angle for a ball down the line, but apart from that it's the same.
