I don't think they need to remove it, but I think the city needs to respond to this properly. We're all taught about the Industrial Revolution in schools, Manchester is very proud of laying the blueprints for the modern world, but it needs to be seen in context. There should be a museum dedicated to the Industrial Revolution and the Manchester Ship Canal that tells the full story and owns its history. It should be Salford Quays, which badly needs more attractions as well as better links with Old Trafford and the city.

Some jaw-dropping responses in this thread. I assume it's from the 'Manchester isn't important to Manchester United' crowd and those already working on their 'THANK YOU SHEIKH JASSIM' banner.

Nobody really cares about that ship, it wouldn't be hard to do a refresh of the badge without the ship, but I'm sure plenty of reactionaries - redcafe included - will fight for the ship as if their lives depended on it

They're pushing it way too hard, so because the ships transported some merchandise that was produced by slavery then it's a slavery symbol? Non sense.

Pretty stupid connection if you ask me. It's not as if the ships were only transporting cotton from slave owners, ships transported everything that came to England since it's an island... The ships are a symbol of trade an economic growth and progress for Manchester. Saying they're a symbol for slavery because they did transport one product produced by slaves at a certain point is pushing it way too hard.

This is the first time in over 30 years that I’ve realised there is a ship on our emblem .

So if it went, can’t say I’d miss it.

What's next though, the devil?

As someone already said it still bothers me there's no 'football club' in the logo anymore.

Why stop there? Calling us Manchester United is extremely problematic in itself.

I vote something more inclusive like Rainsville Rovers.
Quite right. Humanchester United it is then..

I don't quite get where the "United" bit comes from. I gather there are other football players in Manchester playing for other teams - so not really "United".

You could argue that anything with a ship on it is related to slavery. It is just idiotic.

Ships were used for far more than just slavery, believe it or not. It is just typical Guardian tripe with them making things up with no evidence.

On top of that, slavery was abolished in 1807; the coat of arms was given to Manchester in 1842. It makes no sense that the ship is to do with slavery.

It's a fascinating article about the history of Manchester and its symbolism, I never thought about it that way, definitely a lot of interesting discussions to be held to find potential solutions.

The article also features ONE person saying that they'd like the ships to go, while this thread features a number of tools going ThEyChEsTeR uNiTeD ELLMAO cancelling the club eh snowflakes!!?!? Which is a fascinating example of how a part of the society tends to work themselves up over absolutely nothing.

The point made in the article is that until 1865 slaves in the US were picking cotton that came to Manchester via these ships. He also points out Manchester's historical links to trade unionism, socialism and social justice. So it's a nuanced article.

Think the badge would look better with just the devil. No-one would care one way or the other, or even notice, if the ship was removed.

Isn't it just. One of the reasons I tend to stay away from the football forums here.

Arsenal need to remove the gun from theirs, it glorifies gun crime
Sheffield united promoting machetes for the mandem crew
Charlton have got a dagger
Argyle have a ship too

About as relevant as banning countries from having moons in their flags because the moon has caused people to drown unexpectedly up through the years. The link is there, but you really have to dig to find it.

That said, I doubt people would jump ships over us changing the logo, but don't just alter it, remake it into something that at least looks like its designed this side of the last World War if doing so.

I’m going to offend some Utd fans here but I really don’t like our badge. It needs a rethink whilst keeping the devil and ship design.

it’s the yellow - like, we rarely have yellow kits or rather, I never associate the colour with Utd. (Yes I know our first ever badge was yellow but that was Newton Heath.)

Some truly horrendous views in this thread. In a time where slave culture is pretty much eradicated from the rest of the world it’s quite sickening to see it being well and alive on the caf.
 Oh, please.

So this guy is more concerned about a ship on a crest, and not even bothered that oh-- Nike and Adidas use slave labor to make products that footballers wear.

He probably wrote the article while reading on his iphone, (which Apple full well knew that one of it's suppliers used child labor,) while sitting in his electric vehicle, whose battery was made with cobalt that was mined with child slaves in the Congo.

But ships man-- that's the real problem. /facepalm.

Yeah, the comment piece by one author in the Guardian has suddenly become a 'woke campaign' to change the badges. The Sun have even done an editorial on it.

The UK probably started or at least heavily promoted slavery. Should we be ashamed of it and leave?

Should Arsenal change their badge due to military explosive manufacturing?
Pretty sure quite a few atrocities were committed using the explosives manufactured there.

Everton's badge features a building whereby 1500 people died in a civil war trying to over take part of it. Should that be changed due to its history steeped in death and war?

Leave them bee (see what I did there?)

We should remove the ship from our badge, in fact we should remove all traces of ships including actual ships because of their links to slave trading.

I'm creating a movement called Just Stop Ships. Who wants to join me?
