I get ETH doesn't want McTominay because that's like 5 guaranteed free-kicks from any random area, and first half yellow card. But I am worried about this setup. Bruno is not a midfielder for EPL.

Pretty ballsy but it is against the team dead last at home. May lack defensive stability in midfield but those players should be able to dominate possession and retain the ball to the point that the primary issue shouldn’t matter much.

I really hope they fecking stop these starting line up tweets in numerical order.

    de Gea
    Wan-Bissaka Varane Martinez Shaw
    Casemiro
    Antony Bruno Sancho Rashford
    Weghorst
This looks worryingly vulnerable to a high press, especially with DDG’s recent antics and Casemiro’s increasing sloppiness in his passing. The back four will need to be ultra switched on all match if this is what we’re going to do.

Bruno is playing Fred’s role B2B with a bit more creativity.

Why is everyone saying it’s a one man midfield?

Fotmob runs this, would be interesting, haha:

Either ETH doesn't rate McTominay at all (even lower than we already thought), or he just wants to try to give as many attacking players a game as possible. I was expecting a bit of rotation up front but thought Wout would probably drop out for them.

    Casemiro - Bruno
    Antony - Sancho - Rashford
    Weghorst

    :nervous:

Could rotate the three of Sancho-Rashford-Weghorst clockwise, so Weghorst is sitting in front of Bruno and Casemiro, Sancho on the left and Rashford up top.

Would make Shaw’s life a bit more hectic though as Sanchos not great at tracking back.

Bruno will play deeper than usual. Ten Hag hinted at him liking what he offers playing a bit further back

Yep. I assume few watched him second half v Betis or listened to Ten Hag post match.

He’s essentially in the Eriksen role next to Casemiro

Looks like ETH liked AWB as second striker with Bruno dropping into RB.

Assume most of you missed Bruno in the deeper role second half v Betis

Looks like Ten Hag wants to try it from the start
I didn't miss it, I also said "I hope we don't try it in EPL because there's no chance we have so much space and time in midfield area. Betis were piss poor, one of the worst opponents we faced this season. " - quoting myself from memory
I hope he makes me eat my words today!

    Very attacking starting XI.

Looks more like what you'd go for in the last 30 minutes if we're a goal down. Plenty of goals and attacking threat in it, but it's asking an awful lot of Casemiro to win the midfield battle on his own - or for Bruno to put in a more disciplined performance defensively.

A little concern that we'll be unbalanced and top heavy and lose the midfield battle. But, If we can get an early goal then, with that line up, we can hopefully go for the jugular and kill a team off early for once.

Could go either way but certainly a brave, attacking decision.

Woah, is that Bruno at 8 and Sancho/Weghorst at 10? Very interesting.
    Would rather see:

    Rashford Weghorst Antony
    Bruno Sancho
    Casemiro

This is probably why the social media teams present the lineups in numerical order and not presumed tactical positional order; if our own fans don't necessarily know how ten Hag is lining up that eleven, then the opposition manager is probably having some doubts, also.

Oh we're going very very attacking in this game. Excited to see how this goes.

To be honest if we can't experiment with playing Bruno in a deeper role against the last placed team in the league then we won't be able to do that against anyone, so today is as good a day as any to try it out.

Interesting line up. Personally would have preferred to see Fred or McT in for one of the attacking players but let's see how it goes.

Southampton are dead bottom in the PL. Should hardly be a major step up on Betis, 5th in La Liga.

True. However, assuming Southampton will play with a relatively deep line, I can't see how Rashford would benefit. I could see why ten Hag did it against Barcelona, Liverpool, etc, but in my opinion, it wouldn't make much sense today. Time will tell.

It will be interesting to see if he plays in a double pivot, covering a full back again, or we have more of a 4-1-4-1.

He’s better deeper IMO (or wider), as it makes better use of his range of passing, and he’s not really great in tight spaces or running into the box anyway. It’s just he has to be a lot more disciplined positionally when playing as one of the main CMs, and his natural game is to be all-action.

A sentenced no Man Utd fan has ever said before.
I don’t rate McT, just not convinced of Bruno’s positioning and Casemiro can’t do it all alone. With Sabitzer seemingly injured and Fred getting a break, our options are limited. Hope ETH got this spot on, though Saints are crap this season
