Wow, just read the article in the initial post. Doesn't sound like a real mass shooting (guy was being chased by the police and was hiding out in the church overnight). There is nothing more Texas than this though:

Wasn't it the same at a Walmart shooting some years ago? I.e., the random person that figured he'd attack the shooters with his own gun got shot and killed. I know the argument includes the idea that gun ownership acts as a deterrent; but are there any examples of 'the good guy with a gun' achieving anything in a shooting incident?
