McFred as a midfield duo heading into 2022/23 season

McFred was the mainstay of a defensive midfield that got us 2nd in 20/21. Last season was more to do with fitness and confidence rather than talent issues, so lets put this to rest.

Anyway today's midfield is not McFred, its Bruno Fred and McTominay with Fred playing a slightly more defensive role.
The football was fecking horrible with Mcfred that season!

Of all the shocking failures of this club in the last decade, going into the first game of the new season with the most promising manager we’ve had since SAF without any midfield signings and starting McFred is surely well up there.

Incompetence at an insane level.
It gets grimmer when you think about the business done by our rivals. Hard to think of a club in the whole of the PL more desperately in need of some new options in midfield (even before we let Pogba and Matic leave!) yet Spurs, Chelsea and Arsenal have all invested big money in that area while we haven’t spent a dime.

Really annoying posts like this. Total lack of knowledge putting McTominay into one sentence with Fred. One is a very poor championship player stealing a living here, second is one of our TOP3-5 player past 3 years.

But even the dumbest posters will see it once we finally shift McTominay to the bench and out of the squad by the end of the season that Fred is absolutely key player despite us being short in midfield for the second spot and him playing again out of position because we didn't land a more natural no6.
I think the negativity towards the pairing is that they don't compliment each at all and a 2 man midfield where neither can control the match or have a great range of passing in the premier league is asking for trouble.

Fred is good but not great, top 4 worthy midfielder but definitely not good enough as a starter for an elite club challenging for the biggest trophies.

Yeah, just look at Pool even with Nunez. I know he cost a ridiculous fee but they knew they were losing 20 goals a season in Mane and just splashed whatever cash they had to to get what they felt was the best possible replacement for him.

Imagine we had overpaid for some players early in the window and had them available for the opening game, would anyone even care? We knew these players were leaving for months and months now and haven’t done a fecking thing about it. It’s depressing as hell.

We really have a complete lack of ambition, real madrid's midfield from last season was far better than ours and yet they still were looking to improve it this summer, same goes for psg who has a midfieldthat walk into our and yet they are still trying to sign ruiz from napoli who is far better than mctominay, where as we are completely complacent and are just happy making do with mcfred, bang average rb position, a gk with limitations and inconsistent rashford and martial

Nothing can win against obvious agenda. Lets just have a positive outlook to the season as how fans should be, instead of acting like people who have bet that we need to win 4-0 in each game.

It’s beyond tragic. The fact that some people still defend it is beyond belief.

The first thing that needed addressing this summer was the midfield. It needed a complete overhaul. And that was before losing Pogba & Matic. And we’ve done nothing. Even if we did sign De Jong we’d still be short. If you compare our midfield options to the rest of the teams in the PL I would imagine it would be comfortably bottom half of the table both in quality and quantity. The lack of depth is probably just as bad as the lack of ability now.

We do need midfielders, especially defensive and central, but its not a completely dire situation. If ETH is smart and he is, he will use different formations to get the best out of the players instead of using formations which will expose the current midfield. Lets put our trust in the manager and watch without negativity.

Plenty of posters who called others drama queens and other arguments over the theory that these 2 would start our season. Scandalous for a club of Uniteds size that this is ongoing

Absolutely embarrassing we've started another season with them as our midfield pairing.

As predicted months ago, these two assclowns start the first game of the season. Crime against humanity.

They've been bad, but Bruno has been even worse and isn't helping the midfield or attack. What's he actually doing?

Our midfield looks noticeably bad already. De Gea's distribution is tragic too, thankfully Martinez has an incredible first touch.

Gonna start blocking people who defend McT.

Can't have that.

Hate the pair. They are useless on the ball. They're not very intelligent and don't read the game well. They cannot pass or score goals as effectively as any good midfielders can. They need to go!

They're both not good enough, but Bruno, Eriksen, Sancho and Rashford aren't helping.

Players better than these two that we could have gotten for less than 25 million since 2020: Hojbjerg, Bissouma, Bentancur, Gravenberch, Tolisso, Marcos Llorente, Zakaria, Renato Sanches...

And yet we are still waiting to sign a player that doesn't even want to be here. Fecking hell.

I don’t mean to hammer the lad but Mctominay seems to get worse each season. Shocking pass out of play.

Can change as many managers as the club wants, but until we upgrade McFred we will struggle in the majority of games. It’s been obvious for multiple years, yet here we are again.

The people that think Fred shouldn't be lumped with Mctominay are in dreamland. He might not be as bad but I've been adamant he's not good enough to be here either. Awful awful pairing.

No one can convince me that we shouldn't put Martinez in midfield over these two clowns based on the 45 minutes we've seen. At least a temporary measure until we bring some actual midfielders in who can play football.
