Why does this sound like a waiter describing the day's special to a customer?

I feel so sorry for Coventry fans. The crap they've been through with owners and all the nonsense with the stadium ownership. It feels like they have just stuck in a vicious loop of never ending problems. I worked the turnstiles there in 08-09 and fans generally seemed happy with the new owners and the new stadium. Little did they know the hardship that would soon follow.

So we won't be getting knocked down Coventry City gear in sportsdirect?

We've long known the guy is a disease to football but there should surely be things in place to stop things like this happening.

This needs to be spoken about

And thank God he won't have the finances to buy United - Glazers would happily sell to him if he did.
I don’t know why footballing authorities keep taking this cancers money. He deserves a lifetime ban from the game for his neglectful ownership of the Geordies. We really must stop treating football clubs as ‘just another business’ in this country. They should have special protections.

I agree Ashley should be banned from having any involvement with football, but that wouldn't really have any effect on what he's done here. His company owns the stadium, which is multi functional.

That said, football clubs should own the stadiums they play in, or have a significant stake in them if they are shared. It makes no sense that stadiums can be owned by someone else, for the landlords then to be able to evict the team for whom it was originally built. It was interesting in the Welcome to Wrexham series, this one of the first things the new owners wanted, to fully own the stadium, and now they do. It should be the norm.

they own the stadium they can do what they want with it, the people that own / are buying cov city are also businessmen. these are just businesses having commercial disagreements. the scandal here is how publicly funded assets fell into private ownership in the first place.

Yep - sad state of affairs. The game is for the fans, and we're continuously seeing that being eroded away.

Why can't the FA be a bit stronger here and help enact change? Spineless twats.

Stadiums should be owned by the clubs full stop. Take sponsorship money by all means but the rights and use of the place stay with the clubs, in perpetuity.

This should definitely be a key part of protections for football clubs. They simply should be able to be evicted from their home grounds.

However in this case, if I was the new owners I’d feck off the Ricoh arena completely and plan for a new ground in the city.

Don't be ridiculous. That's completely unrealistic..

January? No way would United get something sorted that quickly!!

I always had a soft spot for Coventry. Only ever won promotion to the top flight once in 140 years. But then they stayed in the top flight for 34 years until 2001. Amazing record considering they were never actually good.

He hasn’t half said some absolute horse shit over the years, has he? Basically told the Newcastle fans to buy the club if they’re so angry with Ashley.
he’s everywhere too, can barely escape him as a football fan

Sounded like they were getting sorted a few weeks ago too, unbelievable that there is still no real momentum from anyone in authority to sort this out and put measures in place to protect UK football...

Ashley is to football what Peter Rachman was to the rental market. What a vile specimen he is.

What a twat.

I really hope Coventry ground share with someone else and tell Ashley to feck himself with his unusable white elefant.

To be fair to Mike Ashley (I know) - this is entirely Coventry's own fault as they have been mismanaged horribly by their owners for years.

The thing, they've ground shared several times over the last couple of years. Once with Northampton Town and more recently with Birmingham. They thought they had put all that behind them when finally they moved back into their stadium the start of last season, yet here we are.

Ashley is vile, terrible for the sport. Clearly trying to use the stadium as a bargaining chip, to get the nod to buy Coventry on his terms.

Coventry are a good club with decent fans. I enjoyed both games with them last season. Hopefully this gets sorted soon and doesn’t derail their playoff push.

He can't keep getting away with this. I'm baffled.
