Nonchalantly scoring the winner...
You’re in charge of Newcastle, it’s January - who do you target to keep you up?

Obviously most will reject you so don’t worry about multiple bids for the same position etc in this.

Arse - Xaka, Leno
Villa - Cash, Targett, maybe Mings
Brentford - Pinnock
Brighton - Lamptey, Duffy
Burnley - Tarkowski
Chelsea - Barkley, Gallagher
Crystal Palace - Zaha, Benteke
Everton - Townsend, Digne
Leeds - Bamford
Leicester - Maddison
Liverpool - Kieta, Tsimikas
Man City - Torres
Man Utd - Lingard
Norwich - Cantwell
Southampton - Walcott
Spurs - Dele Alli
Watford - Foster
West Ham - Soucek
Wolves - Traore, Neves

Chelsea (the saviours of football) fan.
Firstly, don't tell me what to do.

Secondly, I think I read that they won't be going nuts in January (but who knows).

From Chelsea, I can see Barkley and maybe CHO.

Hopefully they go nuts and give us 70 odd million for Kepa.

I'd only target two but not sure
A) the clubs would sell
B) the players would entertain going there

But I'd go for Kante or Barkley from Chelsea as they are massive upgrades on the current midfield and Kante offers so much

Lingard or DVB from United, again better than they've got

For me the keeper and defence although not great are no where near as in need of upgrades where as the midfield is there worst in the league by a long way.

The front 3 of Almiron, Wilson and St Maxim are fine

Tarkowski and Lingard are two players whose contracts expire in 2022 who are both decent at that level + actually attainable.

they’ll muscle in on the experienced PL contract lads and pay small fees and big wages. Tarkowski and Lingard will be approached for sure. Aren’t there loads of good players expiring in Europe this summer or was that last summer?

Then onto your Martial Barkley etc

What’s funny is City used to have loads of expensive players they’d happily cut lose at a loss. Bernardo Silva was half out the door this summer. No chance they sell him now. That would have been a mistake.

We could easily cut Martial Matic Henderson Lingard Dalot Telles Donny Bailly Tuanzebe and reinvest. Not a chance we’d do that though. We need to keep the wage bill as high as possible and make it almost impossible for youth to get called up for meaningful minutes.

JWP, Lingard (cut price deal due to contract), Aarons, McGinn, someone like Milner maybe as well given ex player and big name but not guaranteed starter where he is and one last payday.

Manchester City
Arsenal- Eddie Nketiah (reportedly wants to leave after barely featuring so far this season)
Aston Villa- Aaron Ramsey (decent prospect for the future in a squad with few assets who Villa might actually sell)
Brentford- Bryan Mbeumo (will be expensive, but Brentford are open to selling star players if the price is right)
Brighton- Solly March (dynamic presence, and one of the few senior players who might be allowed to go for fairly cheap)
Burnley- James Tarkowski (but would be more likely to leave on a free in the summer)
Chelsea- Ross Barkley (proved last season that he can still contribute if he stays fit)
Crystal Palace- Jean-Phillipe Mateta (would have to go through Mainz but I doubt Palace would object)
Everton- Cenk Tosun
Leeds- Rodrigo
Leicester- Kelechi Iheanacho (please someone get this poor man away from Leicester, he needs to play every week)
Liverpool- Takumi Minamino (they may not notice)
Manchester City- Zack Steffen (Dubravka's a sicknote, time to forget about him)
Manchester United- Jesse Lingard
Norwich City- Sam Byram (knows the league and won't mind being a squad player)
Southampton- Kyle Walker-Peters
Spurs- Oliver Skipp
Watford- Cucho Hernandez
West Ham- Manuel Lanzini (probably behind Vlasic now)
Wolves- Rayan Ait-Nouri

Walcott would be a hell no if I'm trying to stay up. Even Southampton want him gone asap. Lingard certainly.

From Chelsea, I could see the club cashing in on guys like Ziyech, Hudson-Odoi from the pool of players Chelsea maybe don't want to let go but could be enticed if a big offer came. Barkley is a given, Chelsea would sell him for a modest fee, if the Newcastle wanted him.

From the rest of the top 6;

Arsenal - Lacazette, maybe Leno?
United - Martial, VDB, maybe Henderson?
City - Sterling, Ake, maybe Kyle Walker?
Liverpool - Origi, Keita, a long shot but maybe Henderson?
Spurs - Skipp, Winks, Sanchez

In the first instance PL FFP will stop Newcastle from just going mental, i think it'll be a more gradual thing. Consistent spending and improvement every window, growth with the academy, sponsorship and stature. We'll see them take steps over maybe 5 years to become top 4 challengers. They won't be able to go straight for the top players.

That being said Chelsea have 4-5 players i'd be going for if i was Newcastle, definitely Barkley would be one of them, Ziyech too.
