We've been linked to this Right Back a few times in the last couple of months and reportedly scouted him in his last Champion's League game. I had never heard of him or read him mentioned on the Caf before so researched him a little and he sounds quite promising as per the link given. Anyone seen him play? His stats say he is fast, offensive, a good crosser, full of effort and stamina. Is this true?

Looked like a highlight reel of a winger that video.
If he could replicate all that in the Prem, he'd be great, but you could quite easily see him being a frustrating player that'd leave you in problems more times than not.

Not saying he's a bad player, but that video doesn't really tell me much about his defending

I've watched a few more videos and found one which shows at least some defending, though ofc these videos emphasise the flashier offensive aspects. He does look like an exciting player. Very fast and skillful, quite full blooded in the tackle too.

The attacking qualities of a fullback are as an important as the defensive ones in the modern game, especially for a team like us that plays with inside forwards.

That's true but conversely, when you play with inside forwards you need fullbacks that are able to defend in 1v1, fullbacks that don't rely on the support of the wide player playing infront of them.

IMO he is the most complete Benfica player atm and the one I easily see becoming a top player in his position. Ahead of Lindelof, Grimaldo, Guedes, Ederson etc.

Last year he was breaking through brilliantly, bot on his debut for the NT he was injured badly. Knee operation and basically game-over for the season. This year he is showcasing the same initial level.

He is super-fast, agile and has a great engine. Technically he is really great and comfortable with both feet. Defensively he has improved greatly and I don't think it will pose as problem, even in Premier League. But the one thing I admire the most about him and think that really sets him apart from other "similar" players... He is very intelligent. He simply does not lose possession and always looks for the best option available.

Him and Joao Cancelo may be some of the best young RBs available at the market. I remember when both were competitors at Benfica B, what a joy

To be fair not everyone can be a tank like Valencia
But while these kind of technically brilliant players with no strength are great prospects, their physique is just so important when they're facing modern premier league wingers. he'd be a decent wing though, with a great amount of closing down early play, but he definitely doesn't strike me as a full back

One of the few videos of Right backs we've been linked to where I actually like the look of him.

Best Benfica player imo. Still does some bad mistakes, mostly due to overconfidence but if they have one talented prospect there it's him. I don't rate Cancelo that much but he's fast.

I don't think there are many top quality RBs in football as of now. Lahm, Juanfran, Dani Alves, Lichsteiner have all been extremely consistent and reliable for quite some time but all of them are over 32. Carvajal and Aurier are next best options, one is at Madrid which already makes it mighty difficult and then you have Aurier with his constant troubles with the law. That leaves us with Premier League RBs in Coleman, Clyne, Bellerin and Walker, I doubt we can sign any of them for anything less than a ludicrous sum of money.

In general, we don't have many options to sign a ready made quality RB. We'll most probably sign one of the better prospects and hope they can develop and takeover from Valencia who I think will remain our first choice RB. Whether be it this guy or Joao Cancelo or someone else. If there was ever a Mourinho type RB, it's Elseid Hysaj at Napoli. While he is nothing special going forward, he is a very very good defender who is only 22.

Google Translated as

Victor Lindelof is practically with both feet out of Benfica and the destination is Manchester United of José Mourinho.

Luís Filipe Vieira was on Monday in England to finalize the agreement with the administration of the English club and, according to A BOLA, in the incarnated SAD is expected to enter a sum of 45 million euros by the central defender of 22 years - will become the most expensive transfer ever in the Light club.

the amount of the financial transaction may, however, rise to € 60 million, relating to premiums goals.

Nélson Semedo in negotiations

Besides Victor Lindelof, Manchester United and Benfica also talked about Nélson Semedo. But Luís Filipe Vieira is not willing to let another defender out than the Swedish international.

The clubs are already discussing the terms of an agreement that could be sealed in January, but with the commitment of the right-back to complete the current season in Luz.

Supposedly A Bola are the more reputable of their papers. Suggestions of a long-term approach to a a more technically gifted defense.

We still need some non Portuguese confirmation from good sources though.

I've heard he's great going forward. In that case, I'm for it.

I hope we prioritize getting a talented full back(who can attack) over getting another young potentially world class CB.
Don't see that happening though :-(

If he's that good then this combined transfer fee is going to be eye watering.
Saying that, our first choice back 4 could all be 22 or younger next season.

The Mirror say that we want him in January, but will loan him straight back to Benfica until the end of the season, as their president wouldn't want two important players leaving halfway through the season. I think they're just quoting a Portuguese paper though.

Really want to watch this guy live over 90 minutes to make a proper assessment on him. His youtube vids are very exciting, similar feeling I got to Bailly. Based on first impressions, exactly the sort of full back we need.. very natural going forwards.

Looks great going forward. What about his defending?

So from that article I gathered that we might agree a deal with him in January but allow him to stay on loan for the rest of the season, is that right or am I chatting nonsense?

Something like that, nothing clear yet on just how that is managed, maybe just a verbal agreement to sign him later possibly.
