It's interesting that so much of the response focuses on how good she is as a pundit and how pleasant a presence she has always been. I agree that she is one of the most pleasant and thoughtful footy journals in print and on the pod.
And on the one hand, in terms of visibility, a nice face is great when it comes to diversity and representation, and perhaps acclimatising those who may lag a little when it comes to societal advances. At the same time I do worry when a focus on likeability and individual personality of those involved trails so closely behind the outpouring of support and/or acceptance.
Showing love and support is a good thing and nice people deserve it. I just hope that horrible people in similar circumstances would be, if not shown love then certainly supported for revealing benign lifestyle choices(?).
For example if Custis is ever in a similar position I hope we could all agree that he is a nasty clod based on his nasty personality and clod-like behaviour and yet still support him on the grounds of sexuality or gender. I think that would be a better gauge of social progress.
This is rambly as hell and not nearly as interesting as it was in my head. Toodles.
