Not qualifying for Europe will be a positive

One of the problems this team has had being in Europe is we’ve needed to keep a bigger squad for rotation purposes. We currently have a team where the starters are far off being the required quality so what does that say about the squad players. We end up stockpiling players who aren’t good enough and keep them even though they offer no value to us.

This team needs to be ripped up and by finishing outside the European places, we can cut up to six players without needing replacements. So many players have survived here by because they’ve been given a chance by the new manager. More than half of this squad don’t deserve it. Keeping a small squad when the new manager arrives eventually will allow us to build a stable first 11 and force out those who see no playing time.

This will also help us in FFP terms as we can allow more sales without needing to replace all the departures.

Probably, yes. Accept that we don't belong in Europe right now and start from scratch with the new director of football, scouting department and the manager, of course.

The rot has well and truly set in.

Although, I'm okay with us being out of Europe next season as long as we develop a tactical plan and an identity with or without ETH. Tired of watching us play the most soulless football around. Watching united play should be on the highlights of my week.

We aren’t good enough for European football. We wouldn’t win the conference league

Less funds to revamp the squad sounds great, lets activate all the options and have another season like this one with the same players :nervous:

Pathetic mentality we’ve built.

Top teams would never accept not being in Europe.

The burn-it-all-down thesis is attractive, but it could go the other way and we spiral down into being the next Forest. Be careful what you wish for.

We were in Europe this year and if anything was embarrassing it was what we served up there.

I’m saying purely for the purpose of trimming the unnecessary players we give squad places to. If we’re only competing in domestic competitions I see no need for more than 20 players, the rest can be filled with youth players.

The likes of Lindelof, Mctominay, Martial keep surviving because we need a big squad.

No Europe will allow us to just hone in on the same starting 11. It also allows targeted recruitment for starting quality players rather than squad options like Evans, Reguillon and Amrabat which we went for this summer.

It would be an absolute disaster for the new owners to lose on the European money right from the spot.

I just don't see it with this United team. Look 10 years away from being a serious outfit.

Not having to launch my remote at the TV would be a positive!
I can recommend strapping it to the armrest. Wear soft slippers to avoid temptation to throw shoes and drink from a plastic glass. Only way to safeguard your television in these trying times.

Not sure how this is a positive. We played 6 matches in Europe this season, crashed and burned. Would we really be in a better position if we didn't play those 6 matches? If we're going to get back to the top, we need the money Europe provides.
What also need a structure from the top that enables the manager to succeed, and we need a manager capable of adapting to what he has at his disposal.
With the new incoming hierarchy, we might get the structure. It's up to them to find the right manager. The one we have now is failing miserably.

Nah. Not qualifying for the CL is never a positive. But not qualifying for the Europa League is of major benefit to the implementation of a long-term vision (even for those whose big picture is get rid of ETH). It means the squad can be gutted as we won't need to carry so many overpaid underperforming players. We could probably make do with a core of 16-17 players and the rest being youth (such as Mainoo, Mejbri, Amad, and if we're clever in the market this summer an acquire some major potential).
And it means that Erik (or if people on here get their wish and another manager is brought in) can drill them in their routines and be relatively secure in knowing that fatigue will not incur injuries.

That being said, there are different ways of not qualifying for Europe. I hope to see quite a few players shipped out in January and we quite obviously have to buy or get on loan another striker (and centre back). My hope is that at the end of next month we'll have a settled side and no player in the first XI is afforded the luxury of not grafting for the team.

I agree. Some clubs seem to be able to do continuity, but not us apparently. We should focus on getting a solid 11 together that plays every week and go from there.

An ambitious January window could see us do this in the next 5 months and see where we are in the summer. But for gods sake, don’t leave the signings to EtH.

No, European competition is essential so a new manager can use it to evaluate his squad. Whether it's Europa or conference.

Hopefully it forces us to be smart with our squad building, have a bit of a clear out, and gives us time for a new manager to properly coach us and implement his system.

The positives of not being in Europe means less injuries and players in better shape overall for domestic games.

Apart from the obvious football downside, every season out of Europe dents the clubs stature and reputation especially abroad.

It would be a disaster. We’re in the midst of building a new squad that will be hampered by a lower budget and players wanting European football

We should be qualifying and winning everything like we used to. We should be feared like we used to. We shouldn't be the team that ends the losing streak at home for a bottom table team. Wanting your team to be the force we know they're capable of being shouldn't be an unrealistic expectation when we pay 90 million for players.

It's about time we stop lowering standards and just say it like it is.

This club is a mess and missing out on Europe will be embarrassing. We've spent £450m in two transfer windows and all we have to show for it is an abysmal team. We have a shite manager and we play football that rival fans only bother tuning in to watch so they can laugh at how shite we are.

None of it is a positive

It’s not about lowering standards, it’s about accelerating the much needed clear out.

Being in the Europa League or Conference league just forces us to keep more of the deadwood for rotation purposes. We’ve already seen Lindelof get an extension and we’ll just be seeing more of that next season.

It will be easier to rebuild with a smaller squad.

And here Caf told me that failing to qualify for Ko stage of UCL or for Europa League was a positive cause then we can chase the 4th place in the league (as ironic as it sounds. But now not qualifying for Europe next season is a positive too.

Can a loss be a win?

The idea is nonsensical, I also don't think the new hierarchy will tolerate this level of ineptitude and ambition.

There's no positives, look at what's left of this season, players returning from injury, fewer games than our rivals, that's got to be a positive right? Well probably not, because if we carry on like this (and I suspect we probably will) what excuses can we offer, full strength playing one game a week and still getting beat is not a good look.

This is meaningless. Our problem is not that "we end up stockpiling players who aren’t good enough". Our problem is that we paid top money for players who are not world class, like Antony, Onana, and Hojlund. We need world class players, and a world-class manager, and we are not going to attract those if we can't even qualify for Europe. We have a manager who is not good enough for this level, and he bought players who are not good enough for this level, paying world-class fees.

No, there is no silver lining. It's a failure.

As finishing top 4 is looking beyond the realms of realism, it’s looking like it is either Europa or Europa conference or nothing at all. The conference is definitely the one we want the least, it’s a nothing competition. I wouldn’t mind Europa though as it’s a route into the Champions league if things go badly again next season
