I know there's another thread for RW where we need to address our right wing so badly but I'm not sure if Ole's system requires RW winger, it's more of free roaming, to link up between midfield and attack and It becomes more obvious that we play more with false 9 since Ole become an interim manager so if he gets permanent job, I think we should search for false 9/free roaming. Ole also played Hestad most of the time who is not a classic right-winger but more of free-roaming player.

Being said that, I think Lingard is brilliant as false 9/free roaming because of his movement, pressing, coming deeper and linking up with his teammate, causing confusion for defence but I'm not sure if he can take us to next level especially with his end product, making decisions and passing.

There are a couple of players who can play RW and false 9/free roaming like Fekir, Griezmann, Dybala, etc which I believe could be great for us, improve us and they are also left-footed which could make it more balanced and unpredictable but they are all expensive which could cost 100m with the exception of Fekir, I can't think of an obvious candidate who can play that role. I think Sancho has never played that role but I can see him as more of free-roaming player, rather than a classic winger like Pepe, Sancho is also expensive.

For RW to be addressed, we need attacking full-back first that can play as a winger, as for an example, City do with Mendy, as long as Mendy start, there's no place for Sane to keep width, it gives City an extra options of attacking and one more body in the box in attacking from the width, they start Aguero and Jesus upfront if Mendy is starting because they need fullback to keep width and provide a threat without classic winger, they looked more threatening with Mendy starting than without Mendy, he started 13 games league for City, 6 of 13 games has scored 5+ goal, he is the one that makes a huge difference to City's style of play, they don't have other fullbacks that can play his role.

So If we were in the market for free-roaming player that play on RW comfortably, we should get right attacking fullback first before that.

Sancho, Dybala and Greizmann are easy worth £100m, i'd be happy with it if we get one of them, I don't think we could afford that if we need to spend money on defence. So is there any obvious candidate who could cost less than 100m and has potential to be a world class? Fekir and David Brooks are only one of player I can think of and cost 40-70m in the transfer market. David Brooks is a probably safer gamble given he is playing in the EPL and as a free role in RW under Howe and have a better end product at 21, not injury prone as Fekir

Any other candidate?

Marco Reus is perfect for that role.

Excellent off the ball movement, over the last 6 or 7 years I can’t think of a player who manages to find himself clean through on goal as often as him.

He would have been perfect 4 years ago. He'll be 30 years old at the end of the season and is quite injury prone.

I think our scouts need to look for young not yet established players like Spurs did with Dele Ali.

If we splash 100m on one player we won't have enough to address other positions which really could do with some upgrades.

I think Suso would get eaten up in the PL, just like Mkhitaryan. The young lad from Benfica, Joao Felix, can develop into this kind of player IMO, he'd need time though. I still think we need a RW option as well, you need some variety, the key is all forwards we use now need to have good energy and be able to press.

Fekir is probably the most readily available, I think he's robust enough for the PL but might lack the pace to play that position here, he plays centrally most of the time for Lyon.

Crazy to think Mkhitaryan would be perfect for this system as a free role on the right flank, he has brilliant end product stats in scoring and playmaker during his Dortmund time, I just wish he would be returned to his form instead of flopping for us, he'd be great for this system.

Fekir has free role roam, he roams freely anywhere like Lingard and pressing as well, he has a great end product, if he can go free injury for many years, he'd be a great player for us, he don't cost much as other player likes Sancho, Dybala, Griezmann

Joao Felix will need times to adapt to the pace and physically of PL, if he comes as promising for the future signing, I'm all for it but I'd like a proven player who played in 5 top leagues, tearing up coming from the right flank as free wide before Jaco Felix.

i think martials profile seems to be perfect for that free role in the middle, but then the question is how to get best out of Rashford

I think he would be if he can run his ass off and great off the ball movement. I can't see him being false 9/free roam.

Does a false nine actually need to have great off the ball movement? I thought it's the opposite - a player who drops off from the striker role to a central attacking position that brings others - usually inverted fprwards in to play.

Martial has been better defensively after Jose era & I personally think he would be better pressing forward than say dropping back & providing cover for Shaw.

Martial's short passing is great - maybe not being a true creator of chances but has the ability to bring others in to play with ease at balls to feet.

I agree with @dablem_10 even if martial doesn't make it as a false nine here there is absolutely no reason why we don't try it out. Martial likes dropping back to get the ball to feet than making runs behind the fullback.

Rashford - Greenwood/Sancho
- Martial

I think martial will be better defensively centrally than out wide where he is constantly waiting in the right position in his eyes to attack. We saw that at PSG - minimal defensive work due to him being ready for the counter attacking pass to arrive to him.

I want him doing this repeatedly for us rather than be a winger.

I honestly don't think it would work for Mkhitaryan no matter what team he played in, in the PL, the league is just not suited to him IMO, I mean Arsenal play the type of football that should suit him but he's struggling there as well with a lot less pressure than he had at United.

I'm 50/50 on Fekir, he is good but the injuries and the lack of pace are concerns IMO, I wouldn't be unhappy if we bought him but I'd be a bit skeptical.

I'd like to see two forward brought in this summer with Sanchez, Lukaku and Mata going out, so there'd be room for one experienced attacker and one younger one.

I'd be fine with it if Martial prove he can play as false 9 in middle, he also needs to improve his off the movement of the ball more, because if he was, he could have driven us further with his off balls movement, linking up with anyone anywhere, false 9 require off balls movement to confuse defence more, drawing defence out of position to follow him deep allowing two attacking players to exploit space, combing play-up with other and roam anywhere. He won't be false 9 if he's not doing anything, just wait for balls to his feet, he'd be ending up looking more striker rather than false 9. He'd be world class if his off the ball movement is good as Lingard, Sterling, etc.

Imagine Martial getting good at balls off the movement alongside with his finishing and dribble, he'd be deadly.

To the video, I'd like to see him doing more like this. Perfect goal.

Dybala for me makes the most sense and should be available considering he is on the bench these days

Dybala is my number one choice. and i feel Juve might be inclined to cash in given that he hasn't really been good in the current style of play they seem to be adopting

What do people think a false nine is these days?

Not sure it’s a false 9 we are after more a Right forward who can interchange across a front 3.

As has been said above not many top players available for under £100m. Think we might be better spending on a new CB and maybe thinking about a younger DMC.

I would offload Sanchez and Lukaku and look for a squad player who can cover for the front 3.... dare I say Welbeck... on a free, can play all three positions low goal output but so does Jesse, works hard, injury prone but not going to be first choice.

Then develop Greenwood, Chong and Gomes and see which one takes their chance.

Dybala would be ideal but we have many holes in the team and would eat up a considerable part of the budget.

I don’t want to be replacing Mata with another slow Fekir

I feel we are planning to replace Mata with Joao Felix since lately there has been a lot of reports linking us with him .

Maybe the long term plan is to replace Sanchez and Mata with Sancho and Felix .

Dele Alli? He's great in that role, and reckon he'd be one of the only "star" players Levy would be willing to let go in order to shore up his other prize assets.

Don't want this diving/cheating cnut. I'll prefer Fekir any day of the week. He's a harworking, technically gifted, creative, greot shot and vision...excellent in the right side playmaking role and SS.

It's a forward leading striker at the top of a 3 man forward line that for all intents and purposes looks like a traditional number nine operating on the shoulder of defenders but drops deep into a number 10 position to pick up the ball allowing the wider FWs to go beyond him so that he can pick up a more number 10 role and bring those other forwards into play with clever through balls into the space he has created by dragging CBs out of position. Is that right? Messi is probably the best thats ever played that position. Not sure we've ever played with a false nine, not that I can remember anyway. If Lakakus touch wasn't so bad he would probably suit it since he seems to like receiving the ball with his back to goal.

Martial is the best guy at shielding the ball, has the best short pass & prefers to drop deep to receive the ball.

Compare Firminh0 to Martial the only thing the latter Lacks is an ability to pass through the defence (it's not like Firminh0 is super at this tbh) but ball to feet is something martial does with significant ability & intent.

it would be an awful waste of Martials pace to play him as a false 9 though. Do you agree?

I will rather do this if we are going this route of playing with two upfront and some one in the hole behind.

Martial Rashford
Pogba
New Midfielder Matic Herrera

And get two attacking Full back to provide the width and a new midfielder who can control the game.

Martial/Rashford Pogba Rashford/Sancho
Fred Ndombele
Herrera
Shaw Lindelof Koulibaly Dalot
De Gea

or

Martial Rashford Sancho
Pogba Ndombele
Herrera
Shaw Lindelof Koulibaly Dalot
De Gea

Just based on his youtube, I think Bergwijn would look good playing between Martial and Rashford. I assumed that was the reason we were being linked to him.
