Preparing for a new season

Sparked by United’s pitiful display Vs Palace, I have to wonder why United, as a ‘massive’ club, with one of the highest wage bills in the world, were so obviously underprepared for their first EPL game? They played like it was a training match. Now we are already 3 points off the pace after a match we SHOULD have walked.

From the announcement of the fixtures, every team knows what is coming and when. There had been an interval in the last season due to lockdown, as we all know. Players were well rested before coming back to finish off the season.

I have to question why our players, who are the best paid players in the world, are less prepared than the MUCH lower paid players of Crystal Palace. For the 15-20 years or so of a top footballers career, they should be busting a gut for what they are being paid, before enjoying an early retirement if they so wish. Who else in society, gets to retire in their thirties with more money than they will ever need? Right now, more than ever, the lack of dedication compared to salary is despicable to the fan on the street.

Fekk naffing off ‘stars’ by telling them to get back to training as soon as possible. If they haven’t got the heart for it, then they should be booted out and replaced by hungry players.

Completely done with overpaid primadonnas that treat their social media and social lives as being more important than the ridiculously paid job that they do.

Probably the two weeks break + internationals + very thin squad already
Not sure if many of our players were involved in internationals for various reasons...
Are United running a professional football club, or a Sunday league pub team?

Delaying the 1st game was a joke. It was like pre-season when you are 1 or may be 2 games short. Why would MU allowed the pity allowance on late start, while at the same time, our players are being selected for international games?

We should have started, and be prepared for the season, like other clubs, and allow the club to rest certain senior players as they see fit.

Bayern Munich
Bayern Munich played the CL final less than a month ago. The core team started their team training on the pitch on the 11th of September ( Cyber training started on the 8th). Against Schalke they looked so fit already and even started their intense pressing game again, and they kept intensity high even after 5:0, 6:0, 8:0. Müller pressed and fought for every ball until he got subbed min 82.

How is it possible that most players looked so lazy and siimply not fit enough.

Great post.
Question of mentality, not just the players but also the coaches really.

Top reds in the caf who always defend and never criticize the manager and players will pretend this doesn't happen. Need "nice" excuses (lack of fitness) for the bad performances to sleep better.

Our players are being spoiled. High wages but low amount of work.

Spot on.

I've heard a lot about lack of match fitness and sharpness as being the culprits to our sluggish start. Nonsense, we have a thin squad of largely mediocre talent. We are where we are because we've not invested/invested poorly in the squad. The coaching has been pretty naff too.

Did their players even take a break after the CL final or were they in internationals just over a week later? They also had a 2 week break in July after their league season had finished before preparing for the CL.

It helps playing against another team as poor as Schalke in their first competitive game too.
