I don't find any reason for him staying while he clearly has issues with the board regarding transfers. Should have saved himself the effort and left. He's definitely past his best years by a long margin now but can manage a better job in the midtable than Newcastle.

Managers really drive themselves into mud these days just for more money.
People have sold themselves for far lower numbers, this neverending managerial struggle of 'no, you sack me' is part of the job and signing the contract I guess.

Yet Newcastle won. The clubs aim this season is to avoid relegation and he is going to do just that. They were atrocious for the majority of last season and didn’t strengthen in the summer.

Ashley is running the club at the minimum possible. They run on a net profit most seasons and never invest. They sell but barely replace the players properly. Benitez os doing a great job and is the best manager newcastle have had in years and the best they will ever get for years.

Don't like the guy but if he wasn't there they probably wouldn't even be able to get promoted from the Championship let alone survive for 2 consecutive seasons on the Premier League, assuming they won't go down this season.

Yep. He must have the lowest transferbudget in PL ever. Newcastles biggest transfer was Michael Owen.. in 2005. He would do well to avoid relegation.

They had 3 points after 10 games. Fair play to him for dragging them back up the table pretty comfortably.

He's a bit too good for them.

Can see Rafa taking over Spurs at some point.
Not a chance, he’s now a mid level manager due to his outdated tactics and the fact he’s not exactly a people person.

Spurs have evolved to a far better team that he can ever hope to manage. Good manager for what he’s had to work with, mind

Yeah and he would fall out with Levy pretty fast just like he does with nearly every owner he has worked for.

He is definitely conservative in his approach to game management but I don't get the 'outdated' commentary.

In the first third of this season we were 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-1-1 and getting nowhere fast. Midseason he's gotten the team switched around to a 5-3-2 with solid wing-back play and we're actually looking like a halfway decent side now.

Tactically he can change and adapt. He's still a very good manager, definitely better than that shithouse of an owner Ashley deserves. It's going to be hilarious/infuriating to see what two bit sideshow Fat Mike replaces him with.

Just because he likes to play conservatively doesn't mean he's a dinosaur. He lives and breathes football, and would be a good manager for pretty much any team that could cope with his lack of man management skills.

Most overrated manager around?
Do people really rate him that much nowadays? He's alright, hasn't done too bad a job at Newcastle all things considered. More impressive than a lot of the managers in similar league spots around him.

He's weirdly unique, though, in that he's one of the few football managers who can end up at both Real Madrid and a relegation threatened Newcastle in the same season, without it really looking too weird.

I don't think so. His record in Newcastle for the last two seasons is identical to each other. Right to the very last goal difference. His style might be outdated but no-one can prove it until he gets a bit more to work with.

Could you name and shame the groups of people who are apparently putting him in world top 5 lists or whatever? Who exactly is overrating him? Saying he's doing a good job at Newcastle is suddenly over-praising him because of a loss, away, to arsenal? I don't get your qualifications for overrating.

He is a decent manager but he's a disgrace. Goes into big games with no ambition.

He has managed to convince the world that this squad is shit and avoiding relegation will be close to a miracle when in reality they should comfortably be midtable.

The squad really isn't that great, though.

He's not doing anything remarkable, but since their dire start to the season they've been in somewhat okay form for a side who aren't all that great. He's doing fine.

Rubbish. Newcastle have some of the worst forward players in the league. A good selection of centre halves and good organisation (Benitez deserves credit for this) is why they will stay up.

Was overrated at one point in his career, underrated at another. I'd argue he's appropriately rated now.

Took late winners from United, Spurs and Chelsea to beat him. Beat City. very tactically astute manager that probably should be in a better club in the higher midtable.

How is he overrated?
He’s a manager still living on past glories.

He’s a negative, defensive, rigid coach. He always blames the owners for his failings.

He’s overrated by many fans.
