Grades based on expectation and performance.

1. City - A - won the league at a canter
2. United B minus - an improvement on last season but never really looked like challenging
3. Liverpool D - worst defending champions and scrapped Champions League through luck
4. Chelsea D - spent big but no improvement on last season and relied on others to falter
5. Leicester D - came so close but choked again. They aren't close to the big six in terms of resources though
6. West Ham B plus - perhaps the grade should be higher but Moyes has done a fantastic job getting into the Europa League
7. Spurs F - terrible season, terrible football
8. Arse F - look to be going backwards
9. Leeds A - top half finish, played some great stuff too even if they're overpraised
10. Everton D minus - should be don't better
11. Villa A - have looked a very good side this year
12. Newcastle B - their position flatters them a bit but you'd have to say they've done quite well considering
13. Wolves D - have regressed and could be an outsider to go down next year
14. Palace C - not sure if I should grade lower but under Hodgson this probably good enough for them
15. Southampton D - not sure if the future us bright for them but they live to fight another day
16. Brighton C - seem to have a good manager but bad personnel, perhaps next season might be better
17. Burnley D plus - can't say they did well but they survive
18. Fulham D minus - never looked ready and probably expected to go down
19. WBA D minus - caused a few upsets but fell flat
20. Sheffield United F minus - looked relegated before Christmas but did enough to avoid becoming the worst PL side off all time

City - A - to win the title without a recognised striker, wow some going that
United - B - comfortably the 2nd best side in the league after next to no strengthening to the starting XI in the summer
Liverpool - E - pathetic title defence, poor from the manager as well with how he dealt with the injuries they got
Chelsea - E - a massive 1 point better off than they were last season after 200m spent in the summer
Leicester - C - to challenge for the top 4 for as long as they did 2 seasons in a row is an achievement but to fall away at the same stage for the 2nd season in a row questions have to be asked. FA Cup win was massive for them though
West Ham - B - maybe slightly harsh not giving them an A but top 4 was on even after the loss to Chelsea. Still amazing season by Moyes and JLingz
Spurs - E - not seen a slide from a so called top side like Spurs' since Leeds. No manager, best player wants out, rest of the squad barely top half quality (Son aside)
Arsenal - E - 13 defeats in the league, 13! I trust the process though ;)
Leeds - B - maybe slightly generous but a reminder they were in the Championship last season
Everton - E - after the investment they've made in the side, the players they have, they've still finish below this Arsenal
Villa - C - disappointing second half of the season given where they were in the table, but taking into consideration they were nearly relegated last season obviously massive improvement
Newcastle - C - what you expect
Wolves - D - regressed
Palace - C - what you expect
Southampton - D - regressed
Brighton - C - what you expect
Burnley - C - what you expect
Fulham - D - expected them to go down
West Brom - E - Stupid decision to sack Bilic, no rescue job this time for Big Sam
Sheffield United - F - biggest fall from the previous season I can remember from a side

Not sure how people are giving United B- or B.

If it's against expectation, surely no-one thought we had a chance of the title?
And i'd be surprised if many thought we'd get 2nd, bearing in mind we didn't strengthen at all.

Maybe the little collapse after the fan shenanighans and 1 draw from 3 home games has sullied thoughts a little, but even with that we cruised 2nd.

Perhaps performance wise we didn't do enough in a fair few big games, but we comfortably came 2nd overall even with the late dip and were unbeaten all season away.

So I'd either go B+

If Leicester loitered around 8th and ended up 5th.... would they still be getting these marks? If they got fourth and a FA Cup, which they well, should have.... it'd be an A..... so why does fifth.... the magnitude of one spot is insane, and for obvious reasons, but still.

Leeds A, Man City/West Ham A-, Man Utd/Leicester/Villa B....... Spurs E, Sheffied United F..... everyone else whatever, even Liverpool bookended it well enough to do what they had too, so they'd get a C really, not even close to the worst defence ever. (Chelsea TWICE, United, Leicester and Blackburn)

I really don't get this. How are they the worst defending champions when we finished 8th the season after SAF's retirement? It's just red-tinted glasses and nothing else.

Also, very disingenuous to suggest that 2nd place is a B- for us. We can take that stance now because Ole has secured 2nd place with many games to go. Had we fought in the last few weeks to get second place then everyone would be praising the progress under him.

Liverpool and Chelsea have better squads than us and should have been above us on paper. We did exceedingly well to get second.

You answered your own question, Sir Alex retired, they still had Klopp in charge.

Says they’re overpraised, gives them an A anyway.
They are, but I can't deny that they've done well considering they're newly promoted. They were getting praised for getting hammered 6-2.

I don’t think it makes sense to give a rating solely focusing on the league campaign itself because it ignores choices made relating to external competitions. So, with that in mind, I’d go with this:

1. Man City = A
Deserved winners after a rough start and got their usual League Cup win to boot. A+ if they win next weekend.

2. Man Utd = B
Inconsistent but real signs of progress and the basis of a genuine team being formed. B+ if we win on Wednesday.

3. Liverpool = D
Important to claw their way back into the top 4 but a dreadful season on the whole after a strong start. Likely to be a different animal next year with their defence back.

4. Chelsea = C
Tuchel steadied the ship and produced two excellent cup runs but were reliant on luck elsewhere to secure Champions League football. If they can find a proper goal scorer they’ll be a force next season. Automatic A+ if they win next weekend, cnuts.

5. Leicester = B+
Disappointing end to the campaign but the fact they’re bitterly disappointed about missing out on Champions League football shows how far they’ve come as a club. A great FA Cup win will last far longer in the memory than that disappointment though.

6. West Ham = A-
A brilliant season relative to expectation led by a resurgent Messe Lingard and an equally impressive Declan Rice. Losing Rice at a crucial point in the season hurt their top 4 chances but 6th is a great finish nonetheless.

7. Spurs = F
The falsest of dawns for the 1st half of the season before the Spursiest of second halves. The fan base seems shell-shocked by Jose and their on the brink of losing their talisman. The PTjoSeD will last for a while. Terrible season all in all summed up by that limp League Cup final performance.

8. Arsenal = D-
Distinctly average league campaign coupled with abysmal cup runs. Should be an F for the cheek of joining the Super League but relative to the state of the club, 8th ain’t bad. Do seem to have the semblance of a decent starting XI with the right signings though. If Arteta was subject to 10% of the scrutiny Ole is he’d probably implode.

9. Leeds = A+
The only team that outperformed City for me this season relative to expectations. The 2nd highest points total for a promoted side playing a bold and attractive style of football. Props.

10. Everton = D
The thread asking if they’re the most frustrating team to support in the league aptly sums it up. A poor season relative to the apparent quality in the side and on the touchline. With a few good signings they seem like they could really push on but would anyone be surprised to see them in 9th this time next year?

11. Aston Villa = B
A pretty good season relative to the nail-biter that was last year. The difference in their team with and without Grealish is night and day though; if he hadn’t have got injured they’d probably be much closer to a Europa League spot and an A rating.

12. Newcastle = C+
A relatively good final position relative to how bad things looked at one stage. Will be a lot lower next season as the teams below them have a much higher scope for improvement.

13. Wolves = C-
Poor season relative to the overall quality within the squad but it’s probably wrong to judge them too harshly given the importance of Jimenez to the team. I don’t think they’ll struggle to improve upon Nuno though.

14. Crystal Palace = C
Decent enough season with the emergence of Eze being the real highlight (his injury is a killer). Farewell to Woy, a good manager with a unique career. Palace’s contract situation leaves them precariously balanced for next season.

15. Southampton = C-
An odd team to assess. I like the manager, players, system, and style of play but the performance levels and form were at times worthy of relegation. Feel like there’s the potential for a much higher finish in them though.

16. Brighton = C
Produced a level of performance that was worthy of a top 10 finish but their forwards couldn’t score to save their lives. Think they’ll massively push on next season if they get a proper CF. Big fan of Potter as a manager.

17. Burnley = C
Won’t bother wasting my time assessing them. Dyche does well with what he has but I’ve never wanted a team to be relegated more.

18. Fulham = D-
Much improved after a dismal start and I think Parker has a lot of potential as a manager but ultimately not good enough across the entirety of the season. By far the best of the relegated teams though.

19. West Brom = F
Big Sam couldn’t rescue them despite some improvements in performance. The yo-yo effect continues.

20. Sheffield United = F
A combination of poor transfers and second season syndrome made a return to the Championship an inevitability very early into the campaign. Never looked like surviving.

That makes no sense. So basically they are the worst defending champions ever amongst teams who had the same coach? Ours doesn't count because our manager retired? Rose-tinted glasses for sure. Thanks for confirming.

I agree here, just a bit odd.... it can't be Leicester because they won it via miracle, can't be Blackburn because it's Blackburn, can't be United becauser Fergie left, can't be Chelsea because Jose melted down, can't be Liverpool because of a defensive crisis....

Therefore it's Conte's second season(this) or United 2001/02 after splashing the dough on Veron and RVN.... but then we sold Stam! Always a reason(/excuse/whatever).

Even worse that he's ignoring Chelsea's meltdown in 2015/16 when they finished 10th as reigning champions and that was with Jose so no excuses.

Liverpool this season isn't even the worst title defence of the past 10 years.

1. City - A+ : Seems like only yesterday they were lower than us when we ourselves were 8th, and talk was about Pep leaving.
2. United B- Wasted opportunity, we drew too many matches, even a few weeks ago I said City would lose 2 games before season ended. They did, but we drew like 5.
3. Liverpool C Major injury to a major player, but credit to get back into top 4.
4. Chelsea B - What a difference a manager makes to players and how they are perceived.
5. Leicester B- Some will say they chocked, others will say they lack squad depth and had injuries. But Rodgers should have been more astute in dealing with the last few matches.
6. West Ham B+
7. Spurs E Becoming Arsenal
8. Arse D Where they are and have been for a while.
9. Leeds B Would get relegated with another manager.
10. Everton D - - very disappointing
11. Villa A - big improvement

Not really. You're a team at the peak of your powers (we were told) The drop off has been incredible.

We didn't just lose Fergie, the whole team needed a rebuild and had run its course. @Mindhunter too.
Of course there were mitigating circumstances to our sudden fall from grace. Liverpool did struggle but ended up 4th eventually so their fall wasn't that extreme. I just feel that we are being unjustly critical of them.

Make no mistake, nothing will give me more satisfaction that them getting relegated and Klopp watching over their demise with his smug speechless face.

The fall from grace (or our peak powers) is true

the standards we set the past 3 years compared to this year is quite a contrast

That side of things I’m not disagreeing with

Worst title defence in history or the premier league era is all I’m disagreeing with

not that I really care, we finished 3rd in a poor season by our standards, after such a low I’m delighted we even achieved that! But as it’s a discussion forum I’m happy to voice my disagreement

We finished 17 points behind the top in our title defence finishing 3rd

City finished 18 points behind us last season in their title defence finishing 2nd

Man Utd finished in 8th 22 points behind top in their title defence after 2 seasons at the top, one season losing the Title to City on joint 89 points, then winning the season on 89 points the following year....Fergie left but you had a very capable squad, hindsight is wonderful but we all know that no one expect such a disastrous season in 2014, no one

I’m not even saying that 2014 season was the worst, I can be bothered to look all the way through the records, but any neutral (Utd forum so obviously wrong place possibly to be defensive) would look back and clearly see this seasons title defence isn’t even in the conversation

1. City - B+ - easily won the league, should have been even easier with the resources at their disposal and the level of competition
2. United B - on the right track but work to do
3. Liverpool D - worst defending champions in the PL
4. Chelsea C - poor season but still achieved their goal
5. Leicester C - really shouldn't be getting top 4, ultimately didn't
6 West Ham B+ - shouldn't be this high. Next season probably wont be
7. Spurs D - same old Spurs
8. Arse D - a couple of places below what you would hope for, but this is Arsenal in 2021
9. Leeds B+ - cant argue with a top half finish, though they had a couple of embarrassments along the way
10. Everton D - Everton should not be 10th
11. Villa C - made improvements but still a bit of a nothing team
12. Newcastle C - decent season but completely unremarkable. They should be happy with not getting relegated, their fans will be upset at not winning the league
13. Wolves D - going backwards
14. Palace C - they stayed up which is about the best they could hope for
15. Southampton D - stayed up yet again but gone are the days when they might hope for top half finishes
16. Brighton D - they need work to stay up next season
17. Burnley U - how are they still in this league
18. Fulham D - didnt survive and never expected to
19. WBA D - should be better than this, will no doubt be back in a season or two
20. Sheffield United E - never good enough, still managed to beat us

Liverpool and Chelsea have better squads than us and should have been above us on paper. We did exceedingly well to get second.
About Liverpool, I agreed with you, it is very weird to have 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice CD out of the season, 4th and 5th choice CD also in and out of the injury list frequently. To finish top 4 it is a B for me.

About Man United, it is exceedingly expectation I believe. To finish 2nd it is a A for me.

About Chelsea, they should be challenging Man City, but with a rookie manager Lampard, things out of order. Finished 4th it is a C for me.

About Man City, they have everything, expected to be champion this year, no suprised. standard B for me, if they could win the Champion League, I will change to A.

Everton 10 points and 2 places better than last season and getting D's and E's and F's? The delusion of fans thinking they are a top 6 squad is baffling. They are exactly where you would expect them to be. All teams above them have much better first teams and squads. Not had a great season but average - C at least.

1. City - A- -> won the league, but their start was kinda awful(other than that, they were quite alright, aided by fecking having a 2nd team to play week in week out)
2. United B- -> on the right track but a lot of work left to do: new players, better coaching, identity, etc
3. Liverpool C -> worst defending champions in the PL but still got a scrappy third at the death
4. Chelsea C -> poor season considering the money spent - they ain't playing well with Tuchel as well
5. Leicester B- ->1st class bottlers in the league, but got a cup
6 West Ham B+ -> could have easily played UCL football with a bit of luck and more grit
7. Spurs D -> shit, dogshit
8. Arsenal D -> everytime I watch their starting eleven a fart comes out; finished where they deserved
9. Leeds B -> very good, deserved amount of points
10. Everton C+ -> completely bottled it since February, 5 extra games and they would still bottle it. (however finished better than last season with a shitload of injuries)
11. Villa C- -> good footie at times but huge lack of consistency and too reliant on Grealish
12. Newcastle D -> their usual average football - should be happy they stayed up
13. Wolves D- -> very bad season from them, 0 progress
14. Palace C -> not relegated
15. Southampton C -> not relegated
16. Brighton C -> playing decent footie at times but they need a few players to survive next season
17. Burnley F -> let's be honest, if the below 3 weren't so bad, Burnley would have been a clear relegation candidate
18. Fulham F -> apalling
19. WBA D -> could have survived, but still a bad season by them
20. Sheffield United F -> managed to feck our season up ; how on earth did they fail so hard this season after the previous decent one

City won the title, as expected

Liverpool did well to finish 3rd, considering injury issues. I feel bad for Klopp and Allison even if don't like Liverpool as an organisation. Wouldn't be surprised if Klopp walks away soon.

Chelsea bare minimum to pass achieved. Leicester can't really expect top 4 given their squad and depth. 5th is decent. West ham did really well to finish above Spurs and Arsenal, who both should have been battling for top 4 really. Leeds also had a great season considering just came up. Arsenal not having any European football is a shocker. Everton similar.

Nothing really unexpected in the league this season.

City (U) - Kicked out of the exam for cheating

United (A-) - 2nd place and a cup final is surely the most anybody could have realistically wished for this season.

Liverpool (B-) - Tempted to score them lower but when all is said and done, they finished 3rd so its hard to be too critical.

Chelsea (B-) Again, tempting to pan them but they got CL football despite periods of turmoil and have reached two cup finals.

Leicester (B) Would have gotten a “C” for bottling the Champions League race again but the FA Cup win earns them a “B”.

West Ham (B) Surpassed all reasonable expectations.

Tottenham (F) Been an unmitigated disaster really. Poor league performance. No trophies. Sacked their manager. Best player wants to leave and the squad seems to need major surgery.

Arsenal (C) This will be controversial but I still think Arsenal are going in the right direction under Arteta. They need to not be fixated by league positions right now and focus on building a talented, young and motivated squad. If someone asked me to rate their squad now, it’s hard to argue it’s much better than 8th best, so I don’t think you can hammer Arteta too much.
